Game of Thrones - No Book Chat. NONE. The Books don't exist.

Well I thought that was fucking dire.

Was laughing at most of it. Individual moments were okay. But I find it hard to grasp the actions of Dany. Why wouldn’t you just fly up and burn the Cersei. Done. Lovely.

Spoiler

It is obvious at this point that she isn't interested in killing Cersei - if she destroys the whole city then Cersei will likely die anywhere.

As she said at the start of the episode, she has decided that she wants Westeros to fear her and in her madness, this is the method she has chosen.

Tyrion executed by Dany.

Jon kills Dany and becomes the new Kinslayer. Goes back to the Wall to reform the Night's Watch and hang out with Tormund and Ghost.

Arya and Gendry rule in the South.

Sansa and ? rule in the North.

Sam becomes Grand Maester of the Citadel and there is some kind of epilogue involving him.

Like all those ideas.

Spoiler

Well unlike the battle for Winterfell this episode has actually grown on me with a second watching.  Don’t get me wrong still mostly unhappy with how they have handled the final season, but I did like:

Spoiler

* Jamie and Tyrion scene where he releases him

* How totally irrelevant the Golden Company and Iron fleet turned out to be.

* That Danerys was largely absent and just portrayed as death from above, while we got to see the carnage from the perspective of the people on the ground.

* Arya and Hound parting scene.

* That you could actually see what was going on with this battle.

* Qyburn just been casually backhanded to death.

* Jamie and Cersai having totally unheroic deaths.

You'd have to guess that...

Varys wrote to him to publish Jon's lineage. If you're gonna write such a letter, it's better to address the public far and wide than any one force.

Hardly. The writing has gone off a cliff compared to earlier seasons.

I’ll give you the last episode but this one is a belter... I honestly don’t know what people expected

He was, but I think that that's the most important one by far.

Here is a very good illustration of how some small tweaks with editing a scene can make a massive difference to the final product:

From Episode 4 (not episode 5) (click on link if not showing up in your browser):

That's what's missing from this season: sense.

It's utterly senseless.

Wait... You thought she was destroying all those people/buildings to try and find Cersei?

No. I thought she was being f’ing stupid. I do not really buy her descent and hence all her actions were funny to me rather than reflective of her motivations.

Oh yeah, I meant to link this the other day:

A great scene. If only Mirri's insight had been more common in the years that followed.

I think I was just along for the ride after the last two episodes.

Spoiler

Spectacle aside, I really enjoyed Dany's heel turn making her storyline the creation of a tyrant. Varys deserved so much more though and the thought that he failed to save the people of King's Landing stings quite a bit. In a way I'm glad he didn't live to see it in ruins.

Yeah, but.....has anyone literally said that’s their issue?

Not really, but it’s a handy straw-man. The issue is that it feels like we missed an important chunk of character development. One that would’ve justified such an unhinged move.

If only this season was half as good as this.

Dany-stuff...

Spoiler

Even a couple more scenes of her stewing in her own paranoia would have helped. She has always struggled with straight up killing people in horrible ways but was almost always restrained by her friends and advisors. Now they're all dead or betraying her it makes perfect sense that she might lose it...it's been her whole life and a horrible journey. Instead we got like a couple of minutes and "Oh she's not eating." as the final turning point. That's the frustrating thing, just a tiny bit more room for everything to breathe.

I actually enjoyed it,  within the parameters of what the show has become. If I sit back and think about the actual story it's complete bollocks. But as an episode of "fantasy TV show" it was pretty awesome.

As a chapter of got it was woeful.  Series quality inversely proportional to distance from the books.  I think most of the points have been mentioned no need to reiterate.

For me a lot of these issues lie back in the very rushed meet ups and fast travelling of the last series. Those journeys should of been significant.

Anyway, about Varys

Spoiler

I think he knew tyrion would grass him up, but it was worth the risk.
