A thousand times this. Whatever phrases, scenes dialogue or plots in the books you didn't love, the spectacular work done by GRRM to create this universe is genuinely Tolkien level.

I fucking love GRRM, his world building is amazing, the way he subverts tropes and builds character arc is genius but a lot of people seem to think that the faults in this series wouldn't be there if GRRM was at the helm and I wanted to point out that GRRM makes writing missteps just as much as D&D.

But previously the show was generally doing a really good job of streamlining and improving GRRM's story,  eliminating a lot of the rambling pacing issues with the books while changing certain stuff to make it better for TV.

The combo of GRRM's tight plotting with the showrunners' editing was what was working really well. That's what people are getting at: that we wouldn't be getting these issues if the source material was there for them to adapt and improve.

This is so bang on. The show was a masterful edit of GRRMs excesses, combining characters or snipping out side plots to great effect. Now it's like watching wrestlemania.

I really enjoy these episode breakdowns. There's always a point or connection that I've missed and I'm always left feeling a lot more positive about each episode than before. but even this guy, who is usually really positive about the show, can't help but point out the massive mistakes the show is making with the examples in the most recent episode, so it really doesn't feel like it's the internet looking for things to complain about like some in here are claiming.

Yeah, that is a good video. Episode 6 has plenty of mistakes, but the previous episodes have generally been good and with some great moments, even though they are not short of rushed editing and occasionally clumsy direction and writing. One episode like the 6th though does not mean that the entire season is shit. If the final episode is truly good, then all in all it will be a positive season for me.

I actually think the acting is a little bit worse this season with some characters. Arya and Sansa seem particularly bad this season (they have no hope of lifting this atrocious plot) and Khaleesi is trying too hard. Some of her angered deliveries to Tyrion fall flat. Littlefinger also doesn't have much scenes, which is a waste. Jaime, Varys, Tyrion, Jorah, Bronn and Melisandre, no matter if they have few or many scenes, are simply glorious in my opinion. Sam is nice, Jon is okish, Cercei's somehow feels off in some moments while the Hound is still great, Thoros too and Beric, well, he almost nails it.

Drogon steals the show by far. :) And Olena, of course.

One thing the show still has going for it is (generally) excellent acting. The cast often lifts scenes that wouldn't otherwise be that good, IMO.

The show also looks really great, even if there are some problems with the directing (e.g. not establishing things, unclear fights).

The older cast are generally decent, but Jon Snow and Dany are fucking bad.

I think Jon Snow has improved a lot since the ultra wooden early days. He's not amazing but he's good enough and his furrowed brow certainly has a bit more nuance than it once did.

Arya's usually decent enough I think, but judging by the last episode monologues aren't her strong suit. It sounded like she was reading it off an autocue for the first time. It wasn't as severe a drop as when they came back for a new season a few years back and Bran's voice had broken though. He's been dreadful ever since.
