Day Z, The Road with Zombies

That was quite a funny bit in the stream last night. They were stood around outside the store talking about the specular maps and how the buildings are now lit up properly by the character's light sources and then suddenly one them drops dead and the rest and that video plays out. Friendly fire and then another bandit kill prompts Rocket to run off into the darkness, before dropping unconscious from hunger.

Who negged it?

The live stream the other day had a lot of speculation based on some of Rocket's words... especially the part where he said everyone was working the weekend trying to get it launched... oddly just after saying that he burst into a giggling fit and spat pepsi all over his mic.

Just read a a story on Reddit of some guys first time playing Dayz, and it sounded very like mine. Brought back fond memories, and highlighted why we can never have that back.

I logged in after waiting for a long time of course. And it was pitch black. I had no idea where I was or what I was doing. I could hear the sea off to my right and make out some silhouettes of some buildings up the coast a bit , so of I went. Even the crunch of my own footsteps sounded scary. When I hear the first zombie groan in the dark I absolutely shit myself. I hit the deck and lay there for ages trying to figure out where it was.

I think I spent about half an hour crawling round in the dark, catching the odd glimpse of a moving shadow, listening to the groans and foot steps around me . It was amazing!

And we can never have that back again. Ever. I'm sure there will be great stuff in the Standalone, but it will never ever recreate those first sessions in Dayz. The panic and uncertainty. The first time you saw another player, or spoke to someone and helped each other out. Or finally the first time you killed another player. Back when it wasn't hunting for cars or sniper rifles, it wasn't even really surviving it was just experiencing. I can still remember the time I struck out inland, leaving the coast and travelling all the way to the NW Airfield was an epic epic journey.

I'm really hoping it gets close to that though.

Edit: even later on remember how chuffed we were to have a car!

As for the old days, watching Rockets latest stream really brought back the old days for me. There was a bit where they were in a group of 6 or so players, all running down the main road in the dark with only the light of two torches. Zombies kept popping up and attacking. People kept getting hit and needed bandaging. The tension and uncertainty was back and I wasn't even playing!

If they limit ammo and guns properly then this is going to be great

That game is a memory maker like nothing else. So many good experiences.

I think my first time in the game was when i spawned in what i now know was western electro, pitch black, saw some red flares so went towards them. Met a dude throwing the flares then got mowed down by a bandit.

It's atmospheric early on because you don't game the systems, you just take it at face value.

Some of my favourite moments were raiding the nwaf after a patch made it so the zombies never stopped coming and were super brutal. Such panic, we ran really low on ammunition and took shelter in the firestation. I think that's when strat opened up with his famous fifty to thin the hordes and accidentally blew Mammasboy's head off!

So did I. He was excellent and had really helped me. He was maybe the 2-3 person who had been really helpful over a series of nights. I didn't really want to kill him I just wanted to kill, to know how it felt. Also he has a totally sweet sniper rifle. I genuinely felt bad once I had done it an apologised in the chat. Then wondered if I had doomed other players that he would not help :(
