Day Z, The Road with Zombies

Damn it, damn it, damn it.

I've seriously dialed back my expectations for this. It's probably going to be a rubbish experience to start with. The video he released a couple of weeks back showed it, his comments reinforce it ("Our first step is not the alpha you want. It is the alpha we need to build the future.").

And here I am now checking Steam every 5 minutes. Damn you hype train, damn you to Chernarus.

What does that MEAN? At first it sounded like they were still nowhere near release. But then the last couple of paragraphs sounded like it's imminent.

I wouldn't get it straight away if I were you, Strat. It sounds like it's going to be exactly the sort of thing that will make your head explode with fury :)

I think this is a terrible decision. I'm all for alpha testing but releasing something in early alpha to millions of rabid fans there is going to be one big backlash.

He needs a closed alpha with a few thousand people for a little bit otherwise he's going to really piss people off I would think.

It is strange isn't it. "Our first step is not the alpha you want"... well then should it really be released publicly? Is everyone who sees it is available and grabs it going to know that it's not the alpha "they want"? No, they're not. There's going to be loads of people who aren't following every tweet and reddit thread about the alpha, who just see it's now finally available, who get it and will inevitably think "what is this shit?"

If he didn't say it was going to be out last year then I'm sure he would actually wait until it's in a much better state. Ultimately it's kind of his doing along with the stupidity of most of the people who have been getting absolutely furious that it hasn't actually been released yet.

Ultimately though, if you can't imagine playing a buggy and unoptimized Day Z you might as well stick with the mod for a bit longer ;)

Stupidity? Come on, now. I do feel for the guy but it has been over a year, I don't think people can be criticized for expecting more than an early alpha.

And he knows perfectly well no one is going to go into this really expecting to be alpha testers, its going to be hundreds of thousands of people desperate for Dayz all rushing in and going "er wtf is this shit?"

He's going to need a bunker to hide in for this one.

I'm all for the release, it's just become this huge deal and no matter how much work is done on the game, even if he says another 6 months, they won't be able to do enough to satisfy the people having to wait that long.

So I reckon the best play is to just get it out there, accept the moaning and complaining and just ride it out and in 6 months the impatient trolls and kiddies will have lost interest, the dust will have settled and it'll become the game we've been waiting for.

He can't avoid a backlash, he can just face it, and I think it'll be a huge monkey off his back when it's out, even if it's broken to shit.

I agree with cheeko. The one thing I took from the stream is that EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OKAY. Maybe not right away but the mod was far from perfect anyway. Nothing he does is going to make Strategos happy so he may as well get it out.
