Day Z, The Road with Zombies

Hasn't he always said that he wants it to be harder and more realistic, i.e. more shitty Soviet-era rifles and fewer/less high-powered western guns/gear. I get the impression that he's desperate to make a super-difficult, realistic survival sim, and not something where dudes are running around in ghillie suits with sniper rilfes.

Don't worry, it will be great :)

A new video I hadn't noticed.

Mix of nice looking stuff and really bad looking stuff.

Zombies look like zero threat. Melee attacks are still clearly short range gunshots.

But it looks quite pretty. And the inventory system / eating etc looks good.

Rocket has been discussing and debunking a lot of the issues people had with this video.

Most importantly it's PRE ALPHA. It's probably going to be a bit of a step back initially with certain things, but the entire infrastructure of the game, including all of the net code stuff has been completely rewritten and they should be able to fix and build upon that to make something a lot better than what we are used to.

The video contains LOADS of placeholder stuff. Animations haven't really been worked on and they are currently in the process of hiring a sound engineer type to rework pretty much all of the sounds.

Rocket has denied a lot of the criticism about the axe still being a short range pistol. The bullet holes in the wall are placeholder and if you look closely, they appear where the axe actually hits the wall. You'll also notice things like the axe being able to damage things that come into contact with it during the entire swing animation, rather than just the final point of it like currently in the mod. They have also made it so that react when hit. Ultimately they are working on melee a LOT and it is heading to being along the lines of Chilvary.

The zombies have been completely reworked. They can now attack while moving! They have different kind of attacks etc. Currently I think they are lacking pretty much all of their new animations and in the video only 1 zombie skin is used.

Floating loot? That is obviously a feature which they have no plan on changing.

There is loads of other stuff too, but just remember it's pre alpha footage! Just look at the massive improvements with how the world looks, the inventory etc. Once they get the other stuff all tidied up then it's going to be awesome

I've been trying to write something that doesn't sound too negative but for all the waiting it doesn't actually look like its developed much beyond his initial idea.

I realise the initial idea was really to give the player the tools to do sandbox and emergent gameplay but the first mod and subsequent mutations have kinda covered that with the Arma 2 engine, he's in danger of producing a graphical upgrade to his own vision.

I thought the plan was to develop DayZ standalone before Arma 3 but since they've released Arma 3 recently they seem to have put the standalone on the back boiler with a small team working on it. I probably haven't explained it very well its just after the initial impact and hype, things have petered out and my enthusiasm has waned.

I'm trying so hard to keep my enthusiasm going but it's difficult.

I tried Dayz yet again last night to give myself a little boost and it was so horribly unfun I had to turn it off again.

It makes me wonder if the idea itself has just run it's course.

Like I said before the people ruined Dayz , and I think that might just... be it now. That initial phase where it was all new and everyone was blown away buy it was absolutely sublime but I cannot seem to get that back.

The problem I have always had with Dayz is that it stops being fun when you want to achieve something. Now everyone knows everything about it, you go into a game of Dayz knowing what you want to achieve, and that immediately makes it frustrating. Because you can't do that in this game.

Even if in your head is something as simple as "i want a rucksack and a gun and a tent" you can guarantee, that a: you wont find what you want for an hour. b: if you go to any of the places you need to go to get these things you will get killed". So you start again and off you go, but it wears you down.

Playing Dazzero last night I got tooled up, finally found a decent rucksack and while I hid in a shed waiting for the zombie menace to pass some guy with a pistol ran through all the zombies, shot me in the head and ran off again. An hours careful work just gone, because the zombies just aren't a threat. There are so many things wrong with this situation. firstly you can spawn in places like electro and cherno and just death match , grab a gun run round being a tit with no repercussions. You shouldn't be able to start firing off shots in the middle of a zombie "horde" and just get away with it.

I immediately came back and killed the guy (which again just seems wrong) but instead of dying he walked sideways through a wall pissing blood and dissapeared. A few minutes later I assume it was the same guy killed me again. I couldn't find my body or his. And that point I decided I had had enough again.

Looking at the way SA is going I can't see how its going to be any different yet.

I desperately want it to be good, and I'll be right there as soon as it comes out, I'm just not feeling optimistic at the moment :(

They can have the nicest inventory system in the world but if the zombies are as ropey as they are in the mod then it's failed. The zombies in that video run at the player, stop, the player moves around to the side, and the zombie attacks where the player was, so is now facing the wrong direction and not actually touching the player, and the player still gets hit? So basically like the mod. If that isn't representative of the how it will be because it's pre-alpha they then shouldn't bother releasing the video because all that shows, after all this time, is a bit of polish on a shit.

That may sound harsh but I just really want to be wow'd by it and seeing that video as progress makes me think I won't be. And I'm in a bad mood today.

Zombies have been reworked and they will continue to be worked on until they have them in a state that they are happy with. They have spent a lot of time working on path finding to prevent the zig zag runs from the mod and since that video Rocket has stated that zombies are now able to attack while moving. They look rubbish now because the animations have hardly been worked on.

I have no idea how long it will take to do things but once all of that is sorted then things will be good. Right now they are pre alpha. They have spent the last year reworking all of the inner workings of the game so that they can actually make the zombies better than in the mod.

Rocket released the video because the vocal mass were being entitled internet dicks (I'm sure you know how the internet can get). Ultimately I don't think rocket can really win here. He releases a buggy game and everyone loses their shit or he fixes it up and everyone loses their shit because it isn't out yet.

I think it was a mistake to release that video. It really doesn't show off the progress they've made in a very good light. The other thing that irked me (aside from the confirmation that the zombies are still arse - my greatest worry) is the sound FX are still the same.

Yeah, I think it was a mis-step. Hearing the words 'pre-alpha' after all this time must have made more than a few people splutter in disbelief. I know it did me!

It's offline now so do tell... any good? The message I got from the comments at the end was "calm you expectations", "no release date", "That was 1+ year progress? ok... cu in 2020"... heh...

Please tell me something more positive than that Spork! And something more exciting than different colour pens :)

Ultimately it looks rather ropey at the moment. Animations, zombies etc. BUT they know this and from everything that has been said, all of the changes they have made actually give them the possibility to fix everything up properly rather than being really limited to what they can do like with the mod and Arma 2.

Some people are going to be REALLY pissed off when this releases though, despite it being in alpha and being constantly updated.

Edit: Despite all of its issues it seemed a lot more like the fun Day Z of old when he was running around with others rather than that odd video from earlier this week.

Hey ho campers

Been a while on here and havent hooked up on line either.

Strat still moaning, so all is the exact same then lol

I have to say I have no real love affair any more with DayZ but am still playing Wasteland ffs, on my own, lone wolfing it all over the shop. Its great fun, enjoying it more than ever I have to say. The new head phones are the key to my love fest with wasteland. I can actually hear where cars, people are coming from now and get to turn and shoot em inna head.

The DayZ mods do look intersting especially the battle Royale mod. Anyone fancy a game let me know. You heard of it?

This chap is no nonsense, do like his vids, here he is explaining it (sorry If you've discussed already)

The problem is, as someone recently pointed out that Bohemia didnt give DayZ the love they should have and instead focused on Arma 3 (which is not very good imo) so DayZ got sidelined and ultimately forgotten which was a massive fuck up on their behalf.

The amount of times I've asked them and Rocket, Whats the fucking story with DayZ and got....nothing is just bullshit. So, they dont care, all their eggs went into Arma 3, so move on.

Try the Mods, get a buzz that way.

Cluster! Come join me on Arma 3 wasteland or Capture the hill!

There was also talk of an Arma 2 Wasteland evening to get everyone on for an evening.

I'll be on tonight around 9 bells after footy. Arma 3 wasteland was running like dog shit last time I tried to play it. Map is too big, I was running around like Forest Grump ffs, fail.

The ARMA.RU Sa-Matra servers seem to have buggered off. There used to be lots there now is only #2 that I can see. Was on it last night and had a great session. Theres loads of servers that have tons of crates and heavy weaponry, it is a bit childish though.

Totally up for an Arma 2 night.

You know I was playing Utes wasteland for a couple of months lol, my god that was a panic.
