Legend of Grimrock - new old school dungeon crawler RPG!

All the puzzles so far have fairly obvious solutions in hindsight.

It's surprising how neatly they've been put together. The only thing which temporarily stumped me was due to objects thrown from your pointer and from a character's hand having different momentum.

Well, this is really great, a real throwback to the old ST and Amiga dungeoners except nice and shiny. I installed it and thought I'd see how it performed for 20 minutes or so, and, er, looked up at the clock and it's three hours later. That doesn't happen to me much these days. It's really slickly executed so far and the atmosphere is wonderful.

But you all know this and it adds nothing new to the thread. I just thought I'd put this post here for Mac owners - you know who you are - as I'm running it in Bootcamp/Win 7 on a 2009 base model MacBook Pro 13". The one that only has an NVidia 9400M which accesses up to 256MB of system memory - in other words, a dog of an fx 'card'. On the 13" screen at native 1280 x 800 res and most stuff apart from SSAO on mid or max settings it runs just fine. Looks really lovely on the small screen and, although there's no doubt the framerate could be improved, it seems perfectly smooth enough to me, especially given the genre (having said that, I'm not much of a framerate whore and I suppose in my head I'm comparing the animations to Dungeon Master on the ST or something.)

But yeah, works great, looks lovely, so if you've a Mac and are looking at the minimum specs, be aware that it'll run fine well under the stated ones, for the gfx card/chip at least, as long as you're prepared to Bootcamp it. Highly recommended.

I'm about to dive in for the night. I may restart now I've got my bearings and create a team.

Davros, hopefully you should have no worries running it, it runs on my work laptop (an i3 something with no graphics) at a great framerate if I turn everything to low :)

Nope.

Anyone willing to take any bets on how long it will be before Napole0n starts upgrading his PC? He already mentioned Steam, I give it 4 weeks, tops ;)

It was the first time in about a year I switched my Windows PC on. When shutting down I had to install 119 updates. God knows how long it took, as I went out. After rebooting the updating continued and during those updates it needed 3 reboots and when I wanted to start Legend of Grimrock it was just grinding away on the HDD for about 5 minutes without responding.

I mean, seriously. FUCK Windows.

As I don't need any of the other apps on this machine I may just go for a fresh install though. I got a legitimate Windows Vista, is upgrading to Windows 7 genuinely worth it? Can I pirate it?

Ignore earlier posts. Wine.

Game working with all settings on low. Don't care. Tis great.

Let me guess, you turned it off and on again? :P Glad it's working for you now though, and yeah the game is amazing no matter what visual settings you use as the incredible atmosphere and brilliant gameplay remain the same regardless. Have fun! :)

Don't bother! I've just got stuck at some door I can't find the key to, and I hate it now. Terrible game, possibly the worst ever.

That doesn't happen to be a door on level 2, near some cells, does it? I brought palm to face when I did finally find the key........

Vista is total shit, 7 is miles better, as is XP.

Yeah man, freaked me out a bit the first time :D

Another thing I love about this: I can make notes on the map. Why that isn't a standard feature of all games with in-game maps, I have no idea.

Yeah athough I keep forgetting to mark the location of the crystals on each level!

Omg! Level 2:

Just fought my first 'team' of enemies! That was unexpected :D :D I won first time though woo!

Oh also, I seem to have found a compass, but have no idea what it does. Anyone?

We need to do a poll for who survived their first time...

...I didn't :(

Oh and regarding this - I survived! Mainly because I wasn't stupid enough to walk in and trigger the plate - an old scroll did that job for me. Then the enemies had to queue up through the door to get me :D

I am playing this so cautiously...constant state of "oh shit, what's going to happen if I do...anything!". Every time I see something new, be it something as un-threatening as a button I back up and go to look for something less scary until I have to face THE BUTTON OF POTENTIAL DOOM. So, after a while I'll be faced with a choice of POTENTIAL DOOMS, and have to pick one.

The shit-yourself-up factor goes through the roof if you play without a torch...although I'm still collecting the buggers like mad.

I guess everyone from this thread is in bed still from gaming this hard last night then? ;) My 19month old boy means I have to suffer a bit of sleep deprivation today heh.. Totally worth it though!

Got to level 7 and then restarted with the aim of not spreading my skill upgrade points around. Back to level 6 already and utterly slaughtering everything. :)

Yeah that is my goal too; I'm sticking with the default party for now so I get an idea of what I'd like to use for my first 'proper' team :D

The more I play it the more I wish it was a roguelike though; its a shame because save games mean a lot of the risks are mitigated by "I'll just save first and test this" (and it's hard to resist doing so!) and having a set of levels means everyone's experience will be exactly the same, pretty much.

I woke up way too early, but got up nonetheless to get some Grimrock time in before real life obligations would interfere. So I was sitting there, playing Grimrock with a hot cuppa coffee right next to my keyboard but it wasn't until I turned the game off that I remembered it was there! It was all cold and nasty by then :(

Also, before I turned the game off late last night I reached a new level and got promptly slaughtered by the new enemies I encountered there. This morning I entered that level again and slaughtered those very same monsters in my first attempt while hardly taking any damage! Now that I was a bit more clear-headed I made proper use of my mage and my strafe skills and the game was totally awesome again :D

It's back at the number 1 spot on steam again, Guess word of mouth is really helping it to spread. Glad they're doing well as I'd love more games from them.

That is great news! More RPG's from these 4 talented guys would be great as they really knocked it out the park with their very first game.
