yeah, but bloodwych? Play area was smaller than DM... Just saying...

Yes. Bloodwych. It was fucking brilliant. So what if the play area was smaller - what an odd thing to say. There are enough people around to gush about DM and Beholder. Bloodwych was amazing and always gets forgotten - that conversation system was both hilarious and integral to the game, giving it bags more character IMO. I never got to try it in two player, sadly. Perhaps even more sadly, I'd quite often fire it up just to look at the loading screen artwork...

I really liked Bloodwych. Played through most of it with a friend (after we both played the heck out of a magazine coverdisc demo), but we got near the end - I assume, based on how long we played and how many levels we cleared - and found we couldn't pass through a particular space in front of a stair. There was nothing blocking the way, no force field or whatnot. We just couldn't get any further. We spent hours retracing steps looking for anything else to do but there was nothing. We had to give up :(

Re: Grimrock lighting. Last night I took to playing without a torch at all. You can still see fine but the atmosphere cranks up 100%. Plus it shows off the lighting model even more.

My first true dungeon crawler was Eye of the Beholder. I wanted to play Dungeon Master, but never got round to obtaining a copy - I don't think I ever saw it in a store (or I couldn't afford it) and my piracy friends never had it in their collection. I was probably around 14 years old when Eye of the Beholder came out. After the glowing Amiga Format review of the game (it got some whopping 92% score or something) I just HAD to have it and placed an order with one of those UK mail order companies, sending a cheque in the mail and all that - this is firmly in the days when the internet was still very much science fiction and credit cards were for executives.

Then the wait started. First I got a confirmation in the mail that the order would be processed. Then a few weeks later I got an "out of stock" letter. The wait was antagonising. I don't know if you lot know the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Calvin has to wait for his mail order propellor beanie to arrive, but it was exactly like that. I think it took close up to two months - or it least it felt like that. Finally the game arrived and I was over the moon.

The feeling of "going in" and "being there" were just immense. The sound of footsteps in the dungeon of creatures really got on my nerves and solving the puzzles was so delightful. The fact you didn't have a map beyond the first few levels made it feel even more like pioneering and meeting new poisonous creatures would put the fear in you. Such an amazing game. It aged pretty terrible though, so this Grimrock thing might be an excellent modern day take on the genre. Can't wait for a Mac version.

So, how's everyone doing with finding the treasures? I've about half way through level 5 and have two of them so far.

The first was on level 2, I think. The second is in the slime maze on level 4, although the stairs to that area can only be accessed via level 3.

the biggest problem with DM on the amiga was that it required 1meg RAM, unless you had a 1500...

ps. ST ROOLZ! (so I never played EOTB)

also: Captive.

I think post 1990 most Amiga games required 1MB. Let alone the creative apps. The memory expansion was the first upgrade I got after I got my Amiga, it was pretty much essential.

Now you're talking. This was probably my favourite genre as a nipper/early teen, and that was probably my favourite example of it. I loved Xenomorph too, but it was rock solid.

Edit - Regarding not being able to finish Bloodwych, I couldn't either. I played through several times to a point where I just couldn't continue. I can't remember exactly what it was now, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't the same as your case, Sabreman. I have an incling it was an unlockable door or something.

Is there anyway to change the location of the save games? Mainly so I can play at home and continue my game on my lunch breaks at work.

And oh man. Just read the AlmostHuman twitter feed. They're working on Mac and iOS versions

Sorted the dropbox problem.

mklink /j "c:\Users\<username>\Documents\Almost Human\LegenGrimrock" "C:\Users\<username>\Dropbox\Data\Game Saves\Legend of Grimrock"

Change the paths to suit your dropbox layout.

I'm tempted to try and play it now on my Laptop, but I'll get far more time to play it on the iPad.

While that might be true for any other game - believe me, once you start playing Grimrock you'll be dedicating a lot of playtime to it regardless of platform :D

My Rogue character had been using spears but I've ditched them since he can now melee from the back row - now he's fucking shit up with his daggers from behind the big-ass Minotaur! :P Also got the backstab achievement already, no matter what game it is, I love getting my assassination thing on.

That's rank 12 in assassination isn't it? Good to know I can ditch my spear at some point if I need to.

How does magic work in this? Every time I try to cast a spell I get "Spell Fizzles" message and I don't recall seeing anything in the tutorial about this.

It's like dungeon master but worse. You have to either figure out the spells yourself or get told them on scrolls. It's worse than dungeon master since it's all tied to your spell school ranks and as a result when you start you probably only have one spell available anyway depending on which school you put your points into. You'll probably be better off reading the spell list online and plan your leveling based on what you want to cast. To start with poison cloud and fireburst are very handy

Yeah, I thought long and hard about it and then decided to pump points into Assassination like crazy right from the start. At level 12 I got the melee from the back row skill and now I'm levelling up my daggers. Bows? Pfft, I decided I don't need them!

I only got to the end of floor 2 yesterday but im loving it so far, it's so atmospheric and tense. I loving how cool the magic looks as well, nice a heavy looking spells not like most other games where you start off with some absolutley puny looking magic.

Thats exactly what I'm doing.. although I'm still pumping a few stats into throwing weapons, as thowing daggers and shurikens are proving quite handy.

Also love how the Magic casting is handled wasnt expecting it to be kept as a rune based system. Makes casting in the heat of battle really tense!

Indeed, especially that one time when I was busy examining a brick wall up close and a spider suddenly jumped me from behind! Really freaked me out and I fumbled my spells and my regular attacks as I panicked

Neat touch: A dude who chucks stuff from the back remembering what he chucked, and with which hand and automatically collecting the thrown projectiles from the floor and re-equipping. Even if both hands are now empty.
