X was OK, but very predictable. Actually nothing really interesting happens at all. Should I watch Pearl or is it similar?

I caught Pearl at the cinema this week, and thought it was amazing. I think enjoyed it more for the style and atmosphere more than anything, but I absolutely loved it to bits.

Speaking of Mia Goth, I watched Infinity Pool and she's also in that. I really enjoyed it, it's by Brandon Cronenberg and it's a about a couple who are on vacation in a resort that's fenced off from the rest of the, very poor, country it's in. They venture outside and of course things go bad. But it takes a very interesting turn and from there on things get properly crazy. I'd recommend it to fans of more 'out there' horror, it's not too crazy but it might put some people off with trippy scenes and such.

Watch Kermode's review if in doubt, his enthusiasm will probably rub off.

Speak No evil.

Spoiler

Up until the bit the stuff happens in the car I was enjoying it, but then the way they just gave up made no sense. No parent would just do that. You'd have to be knocked the fuck out to stop fighting for your child. They didn't even have any weapons. My partner and I both felt it stopped working at that point.

Anyone watched Daniel Isn't Real? I just watched it after hearing the BonfireSide Chat pair discuss it and was pleasantly surprised by it.

Isn't that the movie with Arnie's son?, if so I enjoyed it if so.

Do many of you watch the horror shorts, usually on You Tube etc?   Some are terrible, others are pretty great, but generally its easy to watch them regardless as the runtimes are so short.

Just watched Stuck, I mean... holy shit!!

STUCK

I don't want to yuck your yum, but this was absolute rubbish!

Spoiler

Does the director think people are made out of matchsticks and offal or something? Those injuries wouldn't have happened even if they'd jumped directly onto him, never mind with all that soft padding. Bruising at worst. And how couldn't he open that zip?

I mean, is it meant to be funny? I can only assume it is, but then this comment on Youtube has 6k likes:

"This genuinely made me so disturbed and uncomfortable. It was very detailed and realistic, very bloody and disturbing. Good job."

I've seen more realistic and disturbing gore in Don't Hug me I'm Scared!

Bizarre.

Also, the main thing that didn't work for me was:

Spoiler

For it to be a horror film, you'd really have to either sympathise with the victim (that's not going to happen with the paedo); or the perpetrator has to be surviving a fearful situation (this isn't the case either: the coach trapped him - let's ignore the ridiculous fact that he couldn't get out of the mat - and rather than calling back the police, who'd said they couldn't do anything unless she had concrete evidence, which she now did, she was in a position of power over him).

This was a person being 'righteous' and killing a bad guy - it has more in common with Death Wish than anything scary. It's classic right wing vigilante justice fantasy rather than horror.

I think the reason it claims to be horror is that it's violent and gory - and it is - but I don't think that's enough to be a horror. Even torture porn stuff has the facets I talked about in the spoiler. This doesn't. It's just an unpleasant story with squishy effects.

The horror shorts out there (and there are a LOT of them) dont need to have Hollywood budgets, or amazing special effects, thats not what they are all about.   Usually they are just simple ideas brought to life and I enjoy watching how new and aspiring directors put them together in all sorts of inventive ways.  The one I linked above is hardly the epitome of storytelling but it doesn't need to be, it set out to surprise and shock and I feel it did that pretty well, its certainly one I will remember which is more than can be said for probably 50% of the full length horror movies I watch these days.   There is so much variety and most never overstay their welcome, even if you do not enjoy the short usually its over in less than 15 minutes.  Its a diversion, interesting and fun for horror fans, and I would recommend finding the Alter channel on YT and see what you find there.   Sometimes I can see the potential enough that I wish they would become full-length movies - the one below for example is nothing new in itself but it has mileage (in no small part thanks for the lead actress and the creepy as hell guy) and left me wanting to see far more:

Just watched this tonight. Been kind of on my radar but never got round to it. Thought it was fantastic. And Arnie's lad was pretty good!!

Watched a new one on Shudder over the weekend called From Black. A young woman's child disappeared a few years earlier. She's approached by a stranger at a group therapy session who tells her he knows a ritual that can bring her son back. She has nothing to lose so agrees to it. They board themselves into her house and start the magic.

This reminded me a lot of an Irish film from a few years back, A Dark Song - pretty much identical scenario. It's decent enough. It's dark and intense and the cast put in good turns but by the end I was kind of bored. There was more atmosphere then narrative but the director is worth keeping an eye on I think.

3/5

A Dark Song is fantastic, by the way. If anyone hasn't watched it yet, you ought to.

Seconded cracking slice of folk horror.

There's a lot of Spanish and Italian dialogue that's subbed into English, probably 20 minutes worth.

I found it rather dull overall. Just loads of played out tropes. Ending was quite cool.

You watch it more for Crowe's bad accent and him biting the scenery. Much like a Nicholas Cage movie.
