Good new horror films

Southbound was brilliant. Think Kerraig might have recommended it at the time but it's one I periodically go back to.

Watched Skinmarink last night. If you've seen a cut scene from a survival horror game then the look and feel will be familiar to you. It is incredibly oblique and impossible to determine (visually) what's going on for the full runtime. I don't really want to see it again but I can't deny I was mesmerised whilst watching it.

I finally got round to watching Pearl last night. Loved the opening credits, the score and the shot over the end credits, but found everything else a bit predictable.

I keep trying to like Ty West, but I just can’t connect with any of his films, they all seem like bad photocopies of other movies.

I still think House of the Devil is one of the best films I've seen in the last few years.

Agreed, I have watched House Of The Devil that about three times and love it.

I recommend Something In The Dirt which is about two guys who document a recurring paranormal occurrence in one of their apartments.  I was really drawn into this, in no small part to the two lead characters who also directed the film.

Meanwhile have been watching some (mostly) pretty poor old and new horrors, Snow Falls was one of the dumbest movies I have seen in a long time.  I watched Porno Holocaust which is much more a hardcore sex movie than a horror one.  The Offering was a dull supernatural yarn.

I did revisit and enjoy RawHead Rex, some three decades since I originally watched it, the film has a certain charm that is not lost on it even now.

Its fair to say that RawHead has a face only his mother could love:

Next up is Intruder (1989) which is one I have never watched before, and its a slasher set overnight in a supermarket where someone stalks the nightshift employees, I like the setting for this one so far.  Word is its one of the better slasher movies.

Watched this last night and loved it! The super slow burn and complete lack of cheap shocks was great, and my imagination was going wild thinking about where it was going. Great film.

Have you watched The Innkeepers? I liked that as well, but have found opinion on that a little more divisive.

Intruder - Not seen that since it was released. I always remember Fangoria having a close up shot of the band saw scene on its cover.

Has anyone seen Infinity Pool? I hadn't heard of it but saw it was directed by Brandon Cronenberg.

James and Em Foster are enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional island of La Tolqa, when a fatal accident exposes the resort's perverse subculture of hedonistic tourism, reckless violence and surreal horrors.

Don't think Infinity Pool is out until next month here but I'm really looking forward to it - big Brandon Cronenberg fan. I rewatched Possessor over the weekend and it's so good - one of my favorites of the last few years. There's so much good stuff - the gore, the body horror, the sci-fi ideas, the cast. A easy 5/5.

Yeah, just watched Infinity Pool and it was really good.

I did feel like

Spoiler

the ending was going to go potentially more interesting - I thought he was going to return home and then his double would turn up and want his life

I watched this at the weekend and...it was alright. Very slight story though, and tbh I found The Harrowing episode of Inside No. 9 did essentially the same story in a more entertaining and economical way (and with a much creepier ending). I don't mind a slow burn, but this was bordering on ponderous. When the stuff finally started happening, it was enjoyable enough, but nothing earth shattering. It could easily have been a 50 minute story in an anthology, there was barely enough here to make it feature film length.

The style of it was a spot on homage to 70's horror films though. I think I almost enjoyed the opening credits more than the film. And the music. The music was great.

Absolutely loved Infinity Pool. Mia Goth channeling Edina and Patsy was hilarious. I think the uncut is out in a few weeks, I'll be buying that for sure.

The whole thing had a real JG Ballard/Iain Banks vibe to it - the alienness of the setup combined with real life horrors of capitalism. Brandons best film for me.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan. I loved the homage style, just like you did, and while I actually like slow burn stuff, this just didn't hold my interest. And I didn't like the stuff that happened when stuff started happening.

I think I'm with @jon_cybernet - Ti West just doesn't do it for me.

All his films have flashes of interesting things at the very least, but the whole always leaves me disappointed for some reason. To me, it's like he has these great ideas for scenes or themes or visual motifs or whatever, but once he's done them for a bit, he just falls back on something that ends up feeling like dull conventionality.

But, y'know, that's just my opinion. Please don't take that as a criticism of you if you enjoy his work - I know there are films I think are great that other people reckon are tripe, and that's fine.

I thought The Autopsy of Jane Doe was pretty cool. Brian Cox was good value.

Any recommendations for incredibly tense films? I want to be biting my fingers up and holding my breath.  Think I need to rewatch Alien.

The A Quiet Place films are pretty tense.

The Innkeepers, not seen it in years but it's one film I remember having to get up and turn the big light on to break the tension.

The reveal is so good.

Watched knock at the cabins and I feel embarrassed to say I really enjoyed it.

I'll have to watch it again. I remember it being just alright. I liked the setup, but the execution fell flat. But it's a Ti West film, and those have never landed for me.

Unless I'm defining "tense" differently. I use it to mean the build-up of tension, dread, fear. The knowledge that something is going to happen, and the anxious wait before the action (or jump scares, if it's that sort of film) happens.

I didn't get that with The Inkeepers, just like I didn't get it with House of the Devil.

I didn’t get it with House of the Devil, but Innkeepers is a lot more traditional with its build up. If you’re watching Innkeepers with headphones and not feeling tense as fuck then we’re wired very differently. The sound design and tension basically is the film, and I can see it being very boring if you’re not feeling it.

That said, I watched it on Freevee and an advert for Playdoh popping up for 30 seconds right after the most intense part of the film was pretty funny and tension relieving.

Do people still rate Session 9? I’ve tried watching it a couple of times, but it seemed really amateurish. Felt like someone filming their non-actor mates, and I couldn’t get into it.

Is it worth persevering with?
