Well I just watched Speak No Evil. Fuck, that was bleak.

It was, but since I saw it I’ve grown more and more irritated by the message behind the film, which seems to be a hardly much more subtle take on  “You can’t say anything these days, eh?”.

In particular I read an interview with the director which specifically states that he would have an issue with a “dark” babysitter.

“We were also working with ideas of political correctness. Your child is being babysat by a dark stranger, and you're afraid, but you don't want to seem racist, so you don't say anything.”

Er, no. The “darkness” is not even close to being an issue. Unless you’re a fucking racist.

Skinamarink was utter torture.  Sometimes I hate this thing I have that no matter how little I enjoy a horror movie, I feel compelled to watch it to completion.  I blame most of that on my Letterboxd account.  And to think I chose to watch this instead of The Invisible Maniac (1990) which also looks terrible, but is sure to be more interesting than this.

Join the club, I watched so much bad horror like compelled to finish it in the hope there's a grain of hope or idea that makes it redeemable. Watched Harbringer recently, it was pretty rubbish like that Cuttyshark movie. Even though I knew 10 mins in it was going to be rubbish I just couldn't stop myself.

Interesting, I wouldn’t have taken that from it without reading that quote from the director. I took it more as a comment on middle class politeness/uptightness and how awkward the visiting couple felt but were too polite to do anything about it. I think you can still enjoy the film even if the director has a problematic take on it compared to your own.

I definitely got the impression that there was a side in the film that the director identified with most.

Oh it was definitely an engaging film, but the more I think about it, the more objectionable it gets.

And as I think @schmojo is saying, he clearly feels contempt towards the nice, uptight middle class couple, who are depicted as hypocrites and cowards.

Spoiler

Apparently being polite to a fault is in his eyes a crime punishable by stoning, an "interesting" choice of execution method.

I think basically that the director and I would not get on. His world view is diametrically opposed to my own.

Yes. It has capitalist edgelord bully energy. Which I suppose is just Elonergy at this point.

Unlike similar

cult-based films like the Wicker Man

This felt less about a horrified othering of the villainous element, and something closer to a dangerous both sidesing.

Obviously a lot comes down to how much you think an artist is reflected in their work or not.

Bones And All hasn't made the last couple of pages, but it's worth a watch. It's not really a horror film and I was ultimately left wanting more from it, but it'll certainly capture the imagination of some horror fans. It felt a bit unsure of its core themes despite having a strong foundation in a novel. It's not quite horror, not quite YA, not quite roadtrip, not quite dreamy or nightmarish enough. There's a frustrating simplicity to it where it would have benefited from more meat on its bones, so to speak. It tries to evoke a sense of tenderness but didn't really connect on that level with me. But still, it's worth a try.

I watched Violent Night this evening. David Harbour is Santa Claus who gets caught up in a home invasion in an isolated mansion. It lifts from Die Hard, Home Alone and a few other far superior films. Thought this was total dog-shit. Just lazy, humourless and annoying. A total waste of a good premise and decent cast.

Thanks for saving my time. My dad asked me before if I'd watched it yet, and just started laughing. Wasn't sure if it was a recommendation or not.

So many mentions for The Void, yet for me it seemed terrible and its one of the few horror movies I stopped and never went back to,  I might give it another try as maybe I just want in the right mood.

Is Violent Night a horror movie, seems to be more of an action movie to me?

Watched Nanny the other day, I enjoyed it a lot until it injected a horror aspect into the last quarter or so, which is a weird thing for me to say.  Up until then I was really invested in it.

I did enjoy Killing Ground (2016), a nasty Australian horror about locals preying on a couple on vacation.

Adult Swim Yule Log was bizarre, it didn't quite click with me as much as I hoped but I imagine many will love this.

Christmas Bloody Christmas was throwaway fun.

Resurrection

Been meaning to watch this for a while.

Rebecca Hall gives the best performance ive seen in many a year. Tim Roth is wonderfully nasty and creepy and real.

She is a fairly successful women, daughter who is about to turn 18. Then she spots Roth and anxiety, paranoia, fear set in.

How and why more don't know or speak about this I'm not sure. It's a fantastic film.

Ending ten minutes reminds me of one other horror classic.

What a film.

I also watched Resurrection and agree with you, its a good movie and I was engaged throughout.

Spoiler

And yes, it does have a resemblance to a certain French classic which is a shame for anyone whom has seen that as they will know what's coming long before it happens, I imagine those that have not will be in for a horrific treat!

I watch anything with Rebecca Hall , she was absolutely fantastic in the Night House.

The Black Phone

Finally got around to watching this. It's not really a horror movie - there was a jump scare or two though. It's more a psychological thriller i thought - especially as the two main kids seem to have psychic powers.

I suppose i should spoiler this

Spoiler

The story was good, but i did feel like i wanted to know more about the grabber. Why was he like this? Why didn't his brother know? What was the deal with the mask?

I mean, i get the story is based on violence and to some extent you could you that the grabber is a metaphor of finneys own father and that the grabber was abused himself. The sister seemed a bit pointless really, i mean she did find the bodys of the other kids but she finney escaped on his own.

I don't know why the phone was down there. I mean, did the grabber not see the grill missing from the room? Or even check the room out for what finney had been upto? Just felt like a few plotholes and the grabber never really seemed like much of a threat till the very end. I'm surprised that he didn't kill him when he escaped to be honest.

I did like that all the previous kids escape attempts all worked together in the end for finn to escape, that was pretty great - like a puzzle in a videogame or something.

Overal i really enjoyed it despite some flaws. 4/5
