I apologise I meant gore porn, the movie is just a set up for his extreme kills. The characters are bland and paper thin with zero personalities, and Art while looks great  is just a bland villain. Again it's just different tastes in horror,  but don't believe the hype.

I just struggled to find the concept creepy. Oh its walking towards you at a snail's pace oh no oh god. 

 

And yeah I know the concept is it won't ever stop but it doesn't work for me. Same as with Mr X and all those relentless chase mechanics in games. Irritating.

And that its method of attack is so mundane. It's just walking towards you. How many people do that every day? It's not even as though you could identify it by the way it moves. It's so ordinary that you'd almost never notice it until it was too late.

 

But if it doesn't work for you, having it explained to you isn't likely to change your experience of the film. And that's fine!

Pretty much this, except It Follows is much better. There's shades of The Ring in this too. Either way Smile is "fine". Has some really good jump scares and creepy moments but it doesn't do anything new or exciting at all and the ending kinda pissed me off.

It's definitely too long. Had it been 90 minutes long it would have been a perfectly good way to kill some time.

Yeah It Follows is just derivative of the Ring, and its why I didn't enjoy It Follows until watching again without being a snob. Smile though is just meh, I'm surprised by the positive reaction to this more than anything else.

I feel that way with most modern horrors in general.

Anyone watching the new Interview with The Vampire show? I've watched the first 3 and I'm really liking it. The new cast are good, it's pretty grusome at times and the journalist is a good character.

 

The new one is set is early 20th Century New Orleans so it's all jazz, plantations, racism and the start of the new America. I'm going to keep watching.

Probably watch it once the series is finished, big fan of Anne Rice and the original movie. Glad to hear its good.

I've just watched Smile and enjoyed it a lot. Yeah, sure, a bit of a Ring rip-off (with a dash of It Follows) but I thought it was well made, well acted and quite effective at times. Everyone likes different things from their horror, and I got more out of this than shite like Terrifier.

It's like watching a nightmare put to film (which I believe is what the director was shooting for). Lots of things don't make a ton of sense, some parts are intentionally meandering and feel non-linear to the overall "story", you can never really get your bearings and time doesn't play a factor in the proceedings.

One of the toughest pieces of film making I've seen in a while. Social horror. Disturbing, disgusting, but absolutely fucking relevant 

 

It's not your typical 'horror'. But it a real bastard of a thing.

 

One of the best films I've seen this year. It should make most uncomfortable.

Thanks for the recommendation of Soft & Quiet, that's a new one on me and I will watch it tomorrow.  I am really struggling to find newish horrors to watch that are at least passable that I have not seen before, I have watched so many of late which are poor to average at best.  I do watch a hell of a lot of horror movies though, over 200+ this year alone according to my Letterboxd, and find myself scraping the barrel a bit atm..!

Watched Speak no Evil this evening with some friends. We all found it a very engaging watch, with great performances and lots to talk about, but I feel like the “politics” of the film are a bit dodgy.

The premise seems to be that if we don’t speak out against minor aggressions by being “scared to offend” then we open the door to evil acts. But to make this point the film had to make the “weak” couple unrealistically compliant, and by the point the aggressive couple are openly abusing their child, it passes well beyond what anyone would tolerate. However we all disagreed on the point at which we’d have stood up for ourselves, in that situation. For example, both my friends are vegan, and said they obviously would have drawn the line early doors at being served wild boar - but the film is very careful to paint Louise as a slightly flakey, “virtue signalling” not-really-a-vegetarian, so it’s believable enough that she’d tolerate it. Similarly there’s no way on earth that any of us would go back for the fucking toy rabbit - so the film seeds the notion earlier on that he was a “hero” for going back to look for the toy on the holiday (a little conveniently). So the film kind of has an answer for everything in terms of any “I wouldn’t do that if it was me” criticism, or enough to make it debateable anyway.

 

My issue with it though is that it’s meant to be a satire. If it’s satirising what I think it is (“woke” people being too weak to stand up to perceived threats eroding our security) then it’s a really sneaky, slightly nasty message. There’s nothing inherently wrong with anything the victims do in this. It’s just that they met some evil killers. And the justification for the crimes against them (“Because you let us”) is seemingly suggesting that politeness and tolerance are undesirable traits in our times, and if you value those traits above your gut instinct then you will be abused and killed. I don’t like that message. The filmmaker seems to like the baddies in this more than the victims, which I find more disturbing than the denouement.

 

 

I might be wrong though, as none of the reviews seem to mention this angle other than nods to the film being  “about letting others cross one’s boundaries for the sake of civility”. I’m not doing an especially good job of explaining why I’m uncomfortable about the message behind the film. But normally when you let that happen in real life, nothing bad happens to you. The fact that monstrous people could take  advantage of that does not mean that the fault lies with good people trying to be nice, in this, or in any more global sense to which the film might be drawing parallels.
