Good new horror films

The Vanishing isn't really a horror in that sense though. It's a missing person mystery/procedural with a really bleak ending, like a banality of evil thing. I like it but I can imagine coming away disappointed if I'd gone in expecting some kind of stalk and slash thing.

I didn't have any expectations other than it was recommended as being a scary film with an ending that will haunt you. I knew nothing about it, seen nothing, didn't know it was subtitled.

As it began and had that raw, simple cinematography I thought it would need to be incredibly good to overcome it, even though I find that matter of fact type of direction seen in a lot of 70s and 80s stuff to be unnerving. I guess everyone has seen it, this being the horror thread, but I'll spoiler

Spoiler

I think there's something just unsettling about people going missing anyway that I think the film would have been stronger if it was just that, she went missing, he looks at cctv footage, can't work it out, and that's the mystery. It showing the goofy looking killer immediately just killed any tension or mystery for me. Then he dances around his car perfecting his convince a women to enter his car routine. When he smothers her, then I found it intense. When the guy is in the coffin, intense obviously.

The banality of evil...yeah I guess that chills people.

As a few of you seem to have Shudder are you able to confirm what the pic quality is like? I’ve heard it’s only 720p and when I watched a few trailers from the app on my TV it looked very grainy. I’m sure it’ll look ok on an iPad but the 50” screen wasn’t doing any favours.

Terrifier 2 - Well it's up there with the most brutal, I'll give it that. Feels like something that pushes things so far, that it expects you to laugh at how far it's taken things. That it's so ridiculous that you can't possibly take it seriously. I didn't feel like that at all to be honest.

It's an exercise in

Spoiler

Suffering. And more suffering. I don't think anyone just gets killed in the movie (maybe one person), everyone is beaten, stabbed, sliced, smashed, gouged and just generally mutilated. And then mutilated even further. Then, when you think the scene is over, it carries on with even more. And the film seems to go out of its way to show that even after all the horrific torture, the person is still somehow alive. Just so you know that they're still suffering.

I wouldn't say I enjoyed the first, but it had its moments. But I didn't get on with this one at all.

It was OK, again over hyped but you watch Terrifier for the inventive kills more than anything else. It added lore and I did enjoy this more than 1, but it's like the edgy teen saying stupid shit to shock you. I give it credit for the special FX though but more or less it was decent for what it is.

Anyone see Matriarchy, goes WTF near the end.

Terrifier 2 was good fun.
I'm assuming all those reports of people vomiting in the ashtrays and climbing up themselves in fear has all just been stealth marketing.

Everything is played for laughs. The blood is jelly red, the acting is awful, and it all feels like a freddy sequel in all the best ways possible.

The guy playing the clown is great. Some of his physicality reminded me of Ade Edmonson at times. Restrained when he needs to be and never too over the top.

Half an hour too long, it feels quite indulgent at times in that it'll just let a scene play for way longer than it needs to. That feels good early on but by the time you get to the final reel, it's outstayed it's welcome. Could do with a little tightening up.

Great fun though. It's the perfect naff horror for halloween time.

The violence is pretty extreme for some one expecting a typical slasher, despite the cartoon violence. But yeah not a huge fan of it, like @Goose mentioned it's just there to shock and push the boundaries which is its main appeal. Art is a cool character though I admit.

Re: People throwing up at Teriffier 2 screenings. Like Yakumo said, I think if you went to see the film expecting Halloween or Friday the 13th, and saw that opening scene, you might well feel sick. I had wondered after seeing it yesterday how it got a cinematic release in the US, but found out just now that it's been released unrated.

If you're seeing something unrated, you might have a better idea of what to expect, but then again if you're an adult, who wasn't as film savvy, you might not even notice it was unrated prior to buying a ticket. It's certainly making a splash though, it was originally meant to stay in theatres for a week, but it's been extended by a week, after each successful weekend.

Pearl, the prequel to X is "out there." And it's just as good as X, if not better. Mia Goth is outstanding. Totally star making turn from her. The director, Ti West, is operating on another level at the minute.

4 out of 5

What's the AV quality like? I saw it get deleted from a few places.

Watched Piggy last night and hated it. A good idea but poorly executed. No scares, gore, laughs or tension - definite pass.

Aw man, that's a shame. I found it delightful, but yeah, it might be a hard sell for genre diehards. It's definitely one of those films that is billed as horror but is doing something else within those confines. 4 bagger for me.

I do wonder how much of that is down to stealth publicity for the film.
Once you get the ball rolling on something like that, your fans will run with it like it's an inside joke.

I don't know. I'm not sure it's that cynical. I got the impression that these guys are big fans of old-school cheesy horror films and enjoyed all those gory set-piece kill scenes and the practical effects and makeup and tricks that went into them.

Yeah  a homage to the slasher films of them 80's, with grunge of 70's exploitation and grindhouse films. over-the-top practical gore effects and cruel kills. I'm amazed at what he pulled off for $250k though

Jeez, I watched the first third of it last night and I would have assumed the budget was 10x that, it seems stupidly small to me. I would have thought hiring filming equipment and post production alone would be much more.

It’s already far better than the first film. Although the young lad is Sopranos Season 1 AJ levels of bad.

It’s not as nasty as the first film yet but I’m sure that’ll change…

Oh, wow! Yeah, every penny is up there on screen, that's for sure.

Haha, yeah, they definitely cast bad actors on purpose, or at least told them to naff up their performances. That eyebrow twisting pencil neck is so detached all through the film that you have zero empathy for him and you can all cheer later on when he's

getting whipped with scissors for a bit too long, or having his legs eaten.

The main lasses friend looked like Joanna Newsom and Beavis got in a Brundle telepod together.

Watched the rest of Terrifier 2 and overall really enjoyed it! The gore is very obviously stupidly over the top, but it does much better with its comedy this time, and it has a semblance of a story to grab onto, instead of nothing. Also, the spoiler in @ImmaculateClump's post is fucking hilarious - the director blantantly realised how annoying he was and played up to it.

Make sure you stay for post credits.

Still blows my mind it was $250k. Also how hot the lead actress is.

If I'm wanting to watch a Terrifier film, do I start with the first in a logical fashion, or is the second that much better that watching the first could put me off it?

Opinions seem to vary.

Just watch Terrifier 2, its the best and trying to watch them so close together for the first time is probably a bad idea.
