Thanks for that Significant Other write-up @Loik V credern I'll probably skip it.

Watched one tonight on Shudder, Who Invited Them. A young couple throw a house-warming party, all their guests leave except for another couple who neither of the hosts know. They stay for a drink and things quickly go bad.

This was fine and totally predictable. It plays out exactly as you think it will right from the start but it was well shot and acted (a lead role for Ryan Hansen from Veronica Mars) and it's wrapped up in 80 minutes.

2.5/5

The dude who is the boyfriend in the other couple is great in that. With you though, fills the time but it's clear what's going in from the start.

I'm a bit behind on horror films of the last few years and was looking through Rotten Tomatoes top lists. I was wondering if anyone can point me to any good newish horror films on basic Amazon Prime, Netflix, Apple TV+ or Now TV right now, as I have subscriptions for all of them this month (don't ask!). The biggest recent horrors I've seen are

- A Quiet Place 2

- It Follows

- Hereditary

- Midsommar

- The Witch

- The Lighthouse

so I have missed out on a lot!

These are my favourite horror films of the last few years - the ones in bold are the best on the list. I'm sure there's loads I'm leaving off but you'll have a good (bad) time with any of these.

X
Fresh - Amazon Prime
Bull
Men
Prey
Orphan First Kill. I think I was in a small minority of people who liked this. But if you're in the mood it's great.
Speak No Evil
Bodies Bodies Bodies
Censor
Malignant. YMMV but I loved this. Pure nonsense but so well executed.
The Night House
Come To Daddy
Relic
Host
His House - Netflix
Possessor

+1 for Bull, one of my favourite films of the last couple of years but then I'm a sucker for Neil Maskell.

Not yet but I'm going to tonight.

I'll spoiler my final thoughts on it...

Spoiler

It all goes downhill after just where I posted. It never really does anything beyond that point and is let down by people making stupid decisions. There's not much more in the way of decent moments after the marriage bed scene. It felt like it wanted to be something like REC, but with Old People, and never really knows what to do with that idea.

Ah, well.

Isn't Bull a thriller not horror?. I saw and skipped it because it wasn't horror, but if its good I might watch it regardless.

Yes but not...I cannot really elaborate without giving too much away but it definitely is a horror movie for me.

Really enjoyed Run a lot last night despite quite a few plot holes. Probably much closer to a thriller but definite horror elements and high tension.

Probably an interesting question - what elements would people say turn a thriller into a horror?

Good question, for me if it has a supernatural element then auto-horror. If it has gore it's probably horror but a film like a standard home invasion movie is not necessarily horror. Eden Lake is a good example of where there is no supernatural element but gore and a large amount of threat so I would say it's a horror.

To be obvious, if a film is horrifying, it's horror, but then a film like Schindler's List is horrifying and yet not horror.

Damn, it's a tricky question.

Bull was good but couldn’t help comparing it to Dead Man’s Shoes for most of it. Unfortunately not much holds a candle to that masterpiece.

Definitely worth 90 mins of your time though, Maskell is always very watchable.

I finished watching it last night and I thought exactly the same. It was OK but was expecting more after the praise, and maybe I would have been impressed if I didn't watch Dead Man's Shoes early this year.

Love Malignant. So, so, SO OTT but all the better for it. Agree YMMV, but in schlocky, b-movie terms it’s a really fun ride. Was going to say the film equivalent of a ghost train, but it isn’t really even ironic scary, so I’ll say it’s more a helter skleter or waltzer where by the end you feel dizzy and exhilarated by the silliness of it all.

Terrifier. 1/5. Fucking dreadful. Now I’m absolutely fascinated to know how the sequel is 1) 140 mins and 2) getting good reviews.

It's going to be more of the same, it's about the brutal kills and how batshit insane it is. I hated Terrifier but it got good reviews from horror fans.

Grimcutty

Was dogshit, but not as bad as Jeepers Creepers which is contender for worst horror movie this year.

I said in the main film thread that The Cursed (2021) was a very good werewolf film, let down by a weak ending, but still very much worth anyone's time. Oh, except Boyd Holdbrook's ENglish accent slipped into his southern US accent more than Keanu Reeves in Dracula.

Anyhoo, just watching the Senritsu Kaiki File Kowasugi Files.  Soooooooo good:

Kôji Shiraishi!!!

yes, it does drop off in quality but its not a patch on his earlier stuff but it's still got some good moments. I do like the bearded guy who's so off the rails.
