Can’t imaging how much worse I’d feel if I had a kid.

I’ve also just watched Speak No Evil. Fuck me.

Regarding the spoiler

Spoiler

As the dad of a daughter with a stuffed rabbit she absolutely adores, this hit different.

 Fuck. Me.

Would have been better without the impending doom music from the get-go, I think.

EDIT:

Spoiler

Ooof. Interested in watching this considering the glowing praise it’s receiving, however:

Spoiler

as someone with a 2 year old kid, is this something I should probably avoid? 😶

I’d say better to watch it now rather than in a few years time. Still likely to be upsetting though.

Just came in to recommend Speak No Evil. :D*

*most inappropriate use of a smiley on rllmuk this year.

I don’t have kids and am fully dead inside and I found it difficult to watch.

Spoiler

Kept seeming like it was only planting the expectation of an extreme horror film so that it could upend it, but it just persisted to the point it became inevitable. When Bjorn first returns to the house to find the bunny, you expect violence, not 'shock' from...what's his name? The one who comes across like a pyscho.

I thought early on (as most did I guess?) that they cut their boy's tongue out to prevent him speaking about his abuse, the child swapping I didn't see but isn't hard to think of. So we're to think they sell the kids on? And that Abel committed suicide before they could sell him?

Got to say, when pyscho man says 'I've never worked, I don’t believe in working', I desperately wanted Bjorn to ask 'how do you afford a house in the woods like this then?' but of course he didn't. His alarm bells should have been ringing unless he just assumed he was left inheritance money or his wife was from a wealthy family.

I didn't like how they seemed to just accept their daughter's and their own fate; I was thinking a few punches to the head aren't enough to deter a parent into going into an uncontrollable rage to prevent their child from being harmed but then I watch enough violence in films to forget heads seem like hard things to hit and i wouldn't want to do it either. The mum is held back during the tongue cutting scene but offers no violence towards the woman after. It's meant to bother you, I know, it's not like they had a gun on them or completely immobilised.

And of course, Bjorn not jumping into the drivers seat and running over pyscho man while he's urinating was frustrating, he must know it will be his only chance.

We are subservient to authority and meek and complicit, but at the same time people have an inner strength and survival instinct they don't realise is there, we see people endure extreme pain in stories of survival when lost.

Bjorn decides to drive away at night two times, he doesn't accept Abel being abused, mum speaks up when pyscho man's wife orders her daughter at the dinner table, they weren't meek in those situations.

So I didn't want to give it a 7 after how it ended despite how engaging it all was.

I don't think that really holds together as an explanation. You're cherry-picking that bit from the beginning of the film but ignoring the later moments when they do

Spoiler

fight back in one sense or another: the Danish mother very firmly telling the Dutch woman to stop telling her daughter what to do, both of them strongly reacting to the way the Dutch guy is talking to their 'son' during the dancing scene, etc.

I agree but listening to podcasts and reading reviews everyone thinks they were unconvincingly meek!

Like your two examples, that's what I thought.

The other stuff - the chair, I'd probably give it too if being unused because you know partner isn't coming back. How Patrick (ok I know his name now) grabs Abel and orders him to apologise, not nice but not completely unknown parenting behaviour.

Other comments I've read have reminded me of things, the crying at the opera, Patrick not just saying Bjorn was heroic for looking for the rabbit but that Bjorn is more fulfilled than unnerved by it, he only sees Patrick's validation than how aggressive he appears to be when he stresses it.

I listened to one review that thinks Bjorn is too much of a pushover, he's laid back like we all are. In groups we let stuff slide to keep the peace, unless it's extreme or you're friendly enough to tackle it, I don't know, it's easy to say they're stupid but they're living a normal life, not living scenes from a horror film.

Other stuff, like criticism of Bjorn not telling his wife of what he saw, because if he had 'she would have never got in Patrick's car'. Yeah...they would have forced her.

The small bed for their daughter, is anyone turning back at that point and going home? The shower thing? The peeking when they're having sex? They're weird but add to her uneasy feeling which they do act on.

Also, another one I forget, she angrily shouted to turn the music down in the car. I'm not sure everyone is doing that, or when she tells off Patrick's wife for ordering her daughter at the table. She was upfront about his disapproval.

No review brings up Patrick saying he doesn't work, annoying because it's a bit of a hole. Like how they've done this dozens of times without being caught. People say they just sell the victims cars and stuff but I guess you aren't supposed to think about it. Bjorn tells friends about the trip. You'd imagine others do. One thing I thought was..how did they have the address to send a postcard? I wouldn't think they would give their address out when theyre surprised at the invite, like they enjoyed their brief time and had no expectation to meet again. You'd give a phone number but address?

I thought it was well shot and written, the director said he'd not done a horror before so I think it's impressive in that regard. He said that he got the idea after meeting a couple he felt were off who invited him to somewhere, and he got wondering. That's another thing - the remote location, that's brought up as a red flag of no no no way.

The babysitter too, I just think most would go with that? You trust them when they say the guy is good and used in the area, but really maybe not for parents, I wouldn't know. He instantly makes her laugh with magic tricks.

Abel's tongue being visibly cut off, I didn't see that.

Director also said he wanted operatic music, he said you do need to lead on the viewer, the tension is obviously in you knowing something is going to go bad but you don't know when or how. The Shining begins with eerie music he said. Because it's darkly comic too it works.

I think accepting the stoning was as much about being completely broken, but it does mean they quickly accepted their daughter was gone rather than just temporarily kidnapped, they could have tried fighting, it is two on two, except they have scissors.

There's a scene in Bourne Legacy where I feel like real people would put up more of a fight, it's still engaging but people have sides we never see that come out when pushed, which films cover as well (my favourite one being Eden Lake), cover them except when it's convenient.

It's interesting to think of how many times Patrick has done the exact same routine and every 3rd time adds in things, like he thinks 'oh I'll take a piss, bet they don't do anything', and 'oh, I think we don't have to bring a gun this time', and 'oh, I bet we can ask them to strip off and they will'.

Had Bjorn got in the drivers seat you know Patrick's wife would have attacked the girl with scissors but it's something it's frustrating to not at least see them do something.

One of my favourite films of the year and one you feel the need to recommend to people, I don't say that of most films tbh.

Goodnight Mommy remake is neutered, avoid.

Was it ever going to be anything other than awful?   I watch pretty much anything so long as its horror, but I wouldn't do that one.

Also I have never gotten over the shock of the Martyrs US remake that one time.

Speak No Evil

I really need to stop getting on the new horror hype trains because they so rarely pay off. It had some very effective imagery, but I feel like the overall sentiment was more irritating than insightful.

I'm trying to work out if the writer is

Spoiler

someone who sees themselves as inert, or someone who dislikes those who are.

2.5/5

I just read about the originally intended ending

Spoiler

Dozens of people in different houses bringing their docile victims out to be killed, all as part of some wider cult. It would have explained Muhajid's participation better and probably made the whole thing a bit more coherent, but I suppose not everything needs a wider lore.

I'm like you I watch anything horror, but I seen much, much worst. Remakes are great, I love seeing how they approach and reinterpret the material. It's like spot the difference in how the remake is shittier.

Saw Bodies, Bodies, Bodies today - a group of annoying zoomers (and Lee Pace for some reason) are trapped in a house during a thunder storm and one by one they're killed off.

This was pretty good. It balances the violence and comedy nicely. And the characters are all very annoying so when they start getting murdered it's a lot of fun. It's well shot, there's a great soundtrack and there's enough mystery to keep it interesting.

Probably not worth a trip to the cinema but this was a good effort.

3.5/5

Soundtrack was great, was originally put off by the gen z stuff in the trailer. But its an A24 movie so I gave it a chance, and I'm glad I did. Really funny and  a satirical swipe of the youth today and social media.

I need a trigger warning for this - does Pete Davidson survive?

I watched The Crescent earlier in the week, its about a mother and child staying on a remote house and dealing with loss of the death of her partner.   The film has a pretty adorable toddler in it, but there is a point where the mother is not around for a long period of time and it follows the toddler as he wanders around the house, asking for his mother who is nowhere.  That sequence really got to me, this kid alone in the house and literally everything is a danger to a child that small, least of all the staircase.  I cant recall seeing that in a movie before, it was very effective.

Really enjoyed the mental French body-horror Titane.  Also very good was A Girl Walks Alone At Night and I *finally* got round to watching The Vanishing (1988), also great.

I watched Shark Bait last night. A better than expected 'pretty people vs. shark' film that plays out like all of these films do.

5 teenagers steal jet-skis and sail them out to sea. They crash the boats and are stranded miles out from shore - then the shark turns up. Some good gore and decent tension make this a bit better than the usual entries in this genre.

3/5 for shark film fans.
1.5/5 for everyone else.

I watched Speak no Evil. Man that was tense and harrowing. Being Dutch also gives it another dimension, some of the couple's behaviour was familiar, I actually know people with similar character traits. It's recognizable but without becoming a caricature. Great job by the actors.

One thing I didn't really buy was

Spoiler

the ending. I get what they were going for but not enough had happened for them to just give up like that.

Other than that it was amazing and a must for horror fans. It will stay with me for a long time. 5/5.

Speak No Evil

Spoiler

Yeah it's hard to accept a few punches is enough to deter a parent from doing everything to prevent their child being harmed. Would pain even mean anything in that situation? You're mustering all your will to do everything right? I believe people when they say 'I'd die for my kids'. Bjorn was defeated and accepting as soon as he got into the car with Patrick.

He said he wanted to be wild previously and even had the gall to say to Patrick 'spend time with people I don’t even like', he showed more guts there than when it mattered.

I dislike the alternative ending cult idea as well. Just takes it into fantasy.

Honestly like the film less and less the more I think about it. I don’t think it earned any of its conclusion.
