Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs has been announced as a collaboration between thechineseroom and Frictional Games.

After being rumored over the weekend, and teased earlier in the month, the game has been confirmed to Joystiq by Dear Ester writer Dan Pinchbeck.

Developed by thechineseroom and produced by Frictional, the game is not a direct sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but does take place in the same “alternate history” and the same universe.

The game follows a wealthy industrialist named Oswald Mandus, who in 1899 has returned from “a disastrous expedition to Mexico” which ended in tragedy.

Mandus caught a fever on his ill-fated trip, during which he dreamt of a “dark machine.” Upon regaining consciousness, the mysterious machine from his dreams also “sputters to life.”

Joystiq said a full interview with Pinchbeck and Frictional designer Thomas Grip willgo live later today and will contain more detail on the title.

We’ll update this space as more information becomes available.

Yes folks, the Dear Esther folks and the Amnesia folks have gathered together to make the followup to the scariest game ever. I'm already shitting myself.

Somehow missed the first game? Here's what you missed:

Shit glands activated

I need to finish the first one, but I'm literally too scared to do it. I did the potato pack challenge (for the Portal 2 ARG) by getting really drunk and making my mate sit with me, he didn't appreciate it.

Short answer: Yes

It's got incredible sound design and it slowly ratchets up the tension. By the time you reach the parts in that video you're already on edge. The game is designed around not looking at the scary stuff, so every time you think you see something you dash off like a mad man and look directly at the floor hoping whatever it is goes away. A lot of the fear comes from your imagination as you never let yourself have a good look at things.

Your dreams will be filled with creaking machinery, the desperate cries of pigs, the rattle of chains and the dreadful feeling of something unspeakable is watching you from beyond. That is when you will regret thinking that A Machine for Pigs would be not a very scary experience.

So this will be developed entirely by thechineseroom, with Frictional acting only as producers. But it's good to hear their director has his priorities straight:

It has to be absolutely, bone-shatteringly, terrifying. That was the key thing, Thomas said “If we don’t get as many Youtube videos of people spazzing out, then we haven’t done our job.”

From an interview over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun.
