Yeah, even high-end performance-capture stuff is still years off being photo-real like that. It's clearly just KojiPro fucking with everyone and GAF being, well, insane.

Just as an example, there's a shot in Avatar where Cameron replaced one of the actors with CGI and its impossible to spot even if you know where it is. Obviously that's higher budget than a Fox engine game, but that type of thing isn't impossible.

True, and I agree it's impressive, but it is just a very brief shot and there's obviously miles of difference between the brain accepting something seen for instant and something in a clear long shot with movement and speech.

And that shot was likely done on a render farm for days and isn't realtime.

Everything in Avatar was the cutting edge of the cutting edge and I can't remember the specifics but yeah each frame took a considerable time to render.

To render Avatar, Weta used a 10,000 sq ft (930 m2) server farm making use of 4,000 Hewlett-Packard servers with 35,000 processor cores with 104 terabytes of RAM and three petabytes of network area storage running Ubuntu Linux, Grid Engine cluster manager, and Pixar's Alfred queue management system.[103] [104][105][106] The render farm occupies the 193rd to 197th spots in the TOP500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers. A new texturing and paint software system, called Mari, was developed by The Foundry in cooperation with Weta.[107][108] Creating the Na'vi characters and the virtual world of Pandora required over a petabyte of digital storage,[109] and each minute of the final footage for Avatar occupies 17.28 gigabytes of storage.[110]

Not even Layte has 104 terabytes of RAM.

Cleared up the Twitter image a little. Tried to offer more definition. No matter what I did there was no definable definition on the neck area.

Also worth noting that messing with the levels of the image showed some rather interesting artifacts on everything apart from his head. Suggesting a higher resolution image has been layered atop the low resolution body.

Points worth noting:

  • The upper eyelids only half drop. The attached skin doesn't move at all. (i.e. the eyebrow, the recess below the eyebrow)
  • The lower eyelids simply don't move. I don't know about you, but I can't move my upper eyelids independently of the lower. More-so, when you are shocked or taken aback by something, the natural is to winch/squint.
  • The point of light in his pupil doesn't move in relation to his head movement. In fact it's static within the pupil at all times.
  • The shadows around the bandages on the right of the image are not consistent with the head movement

Someone claiming to be Joakim Mogren has posted a video onto GTTV.

In morse code it says

Translation of the Morse Code: G E N E R A T I N G I M A G E H O L D S C E N A R I O L O A D I N G H O L D A C T I V A T I N G P H A N T O M P A I N D O T M E M E H O L D E R R O R E R R O R E R R O R E R R O R

There's a single frame in there which shows this:

This is from the Ground Zeroes trailer:

Probably just a fake account, but I'm loving all the trolling going on. Neogaf is exploding with simultaneous credulity, incredulity and anger.

How far back does the Kojima having a laugh at everyone elses expense go back? It certainly seems to be a MGS4 reveal onwards thing, but that might just be internet perception.

When it comes to getting people to talk about his games, Kojima is surely unmatched.

There's been a line of irreverence towards the series' popularity from MGS2 on, I think. The MGS2 Substance trailer edited together dialogue to highlight that the game wasn't going to be a platform exclusive.

"Change sides? I don't recall saying I was on yours."
