Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

It's the wrong arm, though. Ocelot lost his right arm, so they would have taken Liquid's right, not the left one as in this trailer.

I'd love a Liquid game, say set during his SAS days. As long as there were buttons dedicated to dramatically whipping off sunglasses and trenchcoats, and for 5 minute Cam Clarke monologues, mind.

Edit: @SMD - everyone agrees he looks like Big Boss, so technically he looks like Liquid.

You know what would be neat? If this/a future game was remake of Metal Gear, except you're playing as Big Boss through the whole thing then the final boss beats the unholy living shit out of you because you're a PTSD afflicted mental with nukes and an army of mercs and shit and he's Solid Fuckin' Snake and ain't no one can stop him.

So, it this DOES turn out to be MGS 5... what does that make of Ground Zeroes?

I've been reading today that Ground Zeroes was announced as the prologue to 5 but that was meant in the way that the tanker bit was the prologue to MGS2. So they might be the same game.

I don't know much about the chronology after 3 but wasn't Big Boss supposed to be in a coma when they cloned him? 1972 or something? I'd have thought this would have been likely set just after that...

EDIT: Ah, forget it. Apparently Peace Walker was in 1974 and he has two hands in that.

  • 2 weeks later...

Not much more talk on this? I mean I would have posted earlier but I spent the last three weeks in hospital, which wasn't enough to put a dampener on the Phantom Pain trailer for me because I'm nuts.

With regards to BB's missing limb, and gathering a few posts I read on the SA topic, it appears that the game will probably be set over a lengthy period including the start of the "Snatcher" elements that have been fairly present throughout the series, with various characters having had their parts and/or whole bodies replaced by living or artificial materials (Frank Jaeger, Ocelot, Raiden, Big Boss); obviously with this being set near the start of the ugly movement, there will probably be huge drawbacks to the replacements, and I wonder if the final game will offer a choice in the matter after such a big dynamic shift (e.g. if you choose to replace the arm, you can and will be effected by psychological phantom traumas etc.).

Also I reckon that BB ending up in the hospital will be preceded by him being "killed" by Solid Snake and Liquid Snake in some fashion, circa MG2.

The roundup I read suggested that Ground Zeroes is set in 1974, after Peace Walker but before Outer Heaven. As his cheek scar seems to be fresh here but healed in Ground Zeroes, and given that Zero acquired the genetic material from Big Boss to create Solid, Liquid and Solidus Snakes in 1972, it might be set immediately after that incident. The fake Big Boss corpse in 4 is just a torso with no limbs and I'm pretty sure the rebuilt Big Boss who Snake speaks to in the end of 4 mentions having lost much of his body and having it replaced. There's also the fact that the Ground Zeroes trailer features a previously unknown character with a burnt face and that this trailer has an unknown guy with a bandaged face there's a possibility that they're very close projects.

It's an odd reveal, but I'd guess we won't hear any confirmation until Rising is out. Narratively, releasing a game set in 1974 then quickly afterwards another game set in 1972 in an interesting idea, creating the possibility that mysteries could be created in the first game and explored in the second.

I think it's safe to say that with medical technology in MGS4 at the level of giving Raiden a completely human-like frame at the end, that end-of-MGS4 Big Boss could easily have lots of cybernetics. We only really see his head, after all.

Not that any of MGS4 had Big Boss in it. Oh no. La la la la...

Yep. Even though that totally fucks up the whole emotional moment with Eva in Eastern Europe, and anyone with lore knowledge knows which eye Solidus lost so it shouldn't have fooled anyone, and the in-game mask for the model is the Big Boss mask, etc etc etc...

I think the whole epilogue thing was part of the shoe-in alternative ending after the team hated the original one.

Remember when the plot of MGS3 leaked out, and everyone was crying fake because it had a guy who shot bees out of his mouth and Dave Lighteninghands and that nonsense in it? Oh, Hideo, you do know how to write cool characters and design fun games, but your plot is bananas.
