I reckon that if MGS5 didn't have that 2nd half repeated, no-one would have complained about the length of the game. 50 levels is plenty when they are done so well.

Yeah, I read this was coming up tbh, I'm trying to pace out the main missions at the moment so I don't blast through the good part of the game and get to the grind so soon lol.

Thankfully I'm up to my ears in Side Ops, that mission list is like a hydra, I do one side op and another four pop up in its place...nice source of cash though and the moment to moment gameplay is so solid I have no issue just doing them to be fair.

I actually like the base building stuff in this more than the main game, which suffers from some pretty bland and forgettable missions - and the side objectives where you have to tail enemies listening to conversations should have earned Hideo an elbow in the guts during design, especially when the twitchy AI sequence breaks because a fucking zebra walked in front of them or something

It's an interesting game that I generally enjoyed but have conflicted feelings over - and I've 100%'d it twice on two different platforms because I'm a screaming masochist with a completionist problem

It's also a shame that none of the locales were as well realized as the black site in Ground Zeroes - that was a great location for espionage funsies, so a few out-of-map specially constructed missions would have been a great addition as an accompaniment or outright replacement of the side ops

The only thing I don't like about the base building stuff is that constructions and combat deployment timers only run in game. So I can't queue a load of new building upgrades and come back the next morning to see their done. Just ended up leaving the game on in the background, not really sure the reason why they felt it had to tick down in game only.

There's a mix of different types - your online FOB's will build new platforms you order while you're offline, but Mother Base itself has to be expanded while you're playing, likewise for most weapon blueprints

Same idea with your materials - some come from Mother Base naturally as you play, but your FOB's / BDU work away in the background while you're offline to procure them for you so long as you log in daily to clean out their mining buffer (it fills up after about 24 hours and they'll stop mining until you log back in)

Yes, I’ve said this numerous times in this thread.

The first chunk or “chapter” is the actual game with an awesome ending. That’s the game there!

After that you’re into “subsistence” territory. Lots of modified missions and post credits style revelation cutscenes.

It’s the best MGS game.

Surprised by the praise in here, I thought it was absolute bobbins and that whole Quiet thing is so fucking rapey I thought this forum would want burn Konami down, that whole outfit Quiet wears and that shower scene where a bunch of men are watching her cheering (stoopped playing at that point made me feel digusting) is probably one of the most fucked up things I've seen in any game.

The game should be panned for this scene alone with no praise coming its way what so ever.

...Okay?

I mean, without sounding harsh, if that's the most fucked up thing you've seen in gaming, you can't have played that diverse a range lol.

Not entirely sure if this is a joke post to be honest, kinda blowing the whole thing out of proportion imo...but each to their own I suppose.

Rapey? Really? It’s a bit silly and voyeuristic, but don’t lose your mind over it.

I loved MGS V, but Quiet’s portrayal was absolutely fucked up and left quite a nasty taste in the mouth. Like, she spends the whole game in a skimpy stripper outfit with a kind of PVC bikini top for extremely contrived and pervy reasons, she spends her time at Mother Base locked in a cell where you can watch her having a shower, and she never says anything. It all feels a bit leering and objectifying, even without the scene later on where the Mother Base bros torture her with electric shocks. None of it felt in any way justified, and it didn’t really serve to illuminate some wider theme. It just seemed like Kojima wanted to have a scene where a beautiful woman is restrained and tortured. I don’t think it ruins the game or anything, but I thought it was pretty nasty stuff and made me think a lot less of Kojima.

Kojima is one hell of a game designer, but his attitude to women is very weird and pretty creepy. There’s Quiet in Phantom Pain, and then there’s also Paz in Ground Zeroes who gets repeatedly raped and has a bomb implanted in her womb. And the scene where they have to cut the bomb out, but can’t use anaesthetic for some unspecified reason.  Death Stranding felt like he’d got a lot of it out of his system, but some of Kojima’s games are pretty misogynistic. I think it says a lot that the most prominent women in his last two games were called Quiet, Fragile and Mother.

Hot take I know but not gonna lie, and not taking away from anyone's opinions on the subject, it just doesn't bother me.

I play games to enjoy em and that's that. I tend not to get bogged down in thinking about all the ins and outs of why these things are happening or whatever. The world already has enough SJW's and the like without me becoming equally outraged and raising my pitchfork. I think my entire line of thinking on her depiction even at the time was just, "odd clothing choice." Done.

Guess I just don't have the emotional range to see it for anything much more than that to be honest.

There was a great deal of discussion about Quiet when the game came out, much as there was with Paz in Ground Zeroes. Like everything else Kojima does, the good and the bad, the savvy and the uncritical, the original and the slavishly genre-bound are so deeply entwined that simply talking about the game as morally good or bad is an exercise in futility. Even within Quiet you have both this hideously regressive SF nudey fantasy and this powerful woman who turns from nemesis to trusted lieutenant.

And we’ve talked about all that at length.

So I think it’s perfectly fine for this forum of all places to have a discussion about how the game doesn’t seem to have been appreciated for its design. It’s up there with Breath of the Wild for its ground-up original take on how an open world setting can be exploited outside of the worn-our Ubisoft and Rockstar templates.

Does the world really have enough SJW's? Is that why nobody is suffering any social injustice any more? Or do SJW's only moan about women wearing inadequate clothing in videogames?

I've played the game a few times, and not once did I get that shower scene. I got the dancing in the rain scene, but not the shower one. A quick google tells me you have to have not showered for five days straight in the game to trigger it. You bunch of dirty stinking bastards. ;)

SJW Klaxon!!! Who unironically uses SJW as part of their day to day vocabulary

Just put her in the infinitely cooler Sniper Wolf costume and blame the weird Japanese attitude to women on their collective trauma of the indiscriminate dropping of atom bombs on their civilian population.

I remember the build up to the game and the backlash when quiet was revealed. Then kojima tweeted “you will feel ashamed of your words and deeds”.

this got me super curious. What was the twist here? There was a lot of speculation about it, how could this be justified? Was she trans? Would that make up for it? (No)

several years after completing the game I still find myself wanting to know what he meant by it? My best guess is that his justification was that she was ‘kick ass’ and ‘tough’ in combat?

I didn’t 100% follow/understand the story. Did I miss something? Anyone know what he was alluding to with his deeds statement?

He was just alluding to the fact that the storyline meant she had to be mostly exposed I think. There wasn't a big 'gotcha' moment.

I suspect Kojima’s thought process was something like “haha, you thirsty idiots! You probably thought I dressed her up like that solely for my personal gratification, whereas in fact I came up with a wholly spurious and implausible justification for why she has to wear a PVC bra and little else all the time. Good luck jacking off over her now, motherfuckers! You thought you were watching porn, when all along you were watching porn with a realistic plot.”

More than enough. Between that and cancel culture, you can't say anything online anymore without being called out for being the worst plague on humanity.

These days, you can’t even be ambivalent about a videogame’s portrayal of women without people mildly taking the piss out of you!!! It’s like living in the DDR, where this sort of thing happened on a regular basis.
