Ninja being awesome was kinda undone by Snake being able to perform pretty much the same moves, for example jumping on then back flipping off a missile.

Other things that ruined the game were the random placement of MGS2 lockers et al around levels, the enemy AI and Alert system being completely unsuitable for the MGS levels, the wonky lighting that was too bright, the naff facial animation (Downs Syndrome Meryl a notable lowlight), the fact you could leap over gantries to skip big bits of level using MGS2's moves, and yeah, the first person shooting, because "so what if it makes the game comically easy? Don't use it!” doesn't make it mess the game up any less.

MGS was a perfectly crafted gameplay experience, tight and smart. Twin Snakes is the level design from that game mashed up against the gameplay of MGS2. It doesn't work.

Apart from the guard AI, boss AI, the way Snake moves, health system, the way alerts work, the graphics, sound, voice work, items, weapons, and control scheme, yeah, it's basically the same game.

It would've been fine if the level design had somehow accommodated the new features, but even the patrol routes were step-for-step identical. It's a bizarre experience, like loading up a Doom level in Halo.

And the effing lock-on doesn't work on the stinger missiles.

Check out Double Dragon over here.

Alright guys, but I liked it. So there! :P

That thing right there is literally the only thing he does in the cutscenes that stood out as over the top. Everything else was awesome and congruent to the rest of the series.

He jumps backwards from a girder flying towards him, throws a grenade at it and blows himself over the railing on the roof of the comm tower. Rather than sidestepping or something. It's really stupid.

Yeah, rather than optimise the original game it quite deliberately and consciously spins it off in its own direction. It's a remix, an act of collage, not a reverential remastering.

Frankly it's quite successful on those terms.

you must be the kind of guy who only listens to cover songs when theyre pretty much identical to the original song :(

Not at all. My whole point is that TTS is the kind of remake where you can't point at it and say "this is the same game, but technically advanced, therefore it's better". To do so is a disservice to both the original and the triumvirate's lively "cover".

Because of some wacky cutscenes?!

To me, TTS is exactly the same game but-more-technically-advanced-and-thus-better. I can't even think of a better example of that, actually.

Game design says hi.

It's the same game in terms of levels and plot, but the gameplay from a completely different game. It's like, "Oh, we remade Wolfenstein using the Battlefield 3 engine.".

Really? You were arguing that it was really different a moment ago.

I'd play that.

Anyway, MGS2 isn't a "completely different game"; it's gameplay is an evolution of MGS1. It's not like TTS is a cart racer or something. It's plays very similarly.

Sure, so does Splinter Cell. I don't think you'd get far saying Splinter Cell Chaos Theory was a better Metal Gear game.

Ahem.

The differences are enough to totally fuck TTS in the ass from a gameplay perspective. MGS was a tightly balanced little game design masterpiece, TTS is a derpfest. It's like, "how can I turn the Ocelot fight from learning the run-and-gun controls into standing on the spot shooting", then "how can I turn the Tank fight from learning the grenade and claymore controls into standing on the spot shooting", then "how can I turn the Mantis fight from learning to use all your skills into standing on the spot shooting", etc etc etc.

You don't HAVE to use the FPS perspective in those fights, uuuuuurgh.

Actually you do, because the auto-aiming works differently and you won't land most of your shots from top-down view.

(MGS had a sublimely tuned system for making it easy to shoot for the hip. Very satisfying.)

And don't get me started on getting spotted. MGS was all "you're fucked, you have five seconds to work out some elaborate way of hiding", and TTS is all "just kneecap people and hide in a cupboard for like a million years until the counter empties". And they fucked up "I prefer to think of it as a character flaw" into "it's a weak-NESS, not a weak-POINT" or some derpy shit. Oh man, and Meryl.

MAKE LOVE TO ME SPAINKILLER, FOR NO ONE LOVES ME BECAUSE I LOOK LIKE I HAVE SUFFERED SEVERE FACIAL BURNS

ah so first you say that tts is too simple and now you say that its too difficult!?!?!?!?!

It's too wrong is what it is.

Yeah mang but I wouldn't have finished MGS2 if that hadn't been added to the series.

It is a different game.

A better game.

You're the kind of guy who rocks up to someone and insists that the Meatloaf an the Melborne Symph version of Bat out of Hell is better because it's a modern digital master, even though Loaf demonstrably can't remember the words.

(The fact is that Meatloaf songs cry out for operatic histrionics, and thereby the album is redeemed.)

You took 26 hours to clear MGS2 and 10 of those was me watching you sit in a cupboard, terrified.

Another 10 were you avoiding guards in the game by hiding in lockers.

In all fairness, you are the sort of guy who listens to Meat Loaf and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

I believe I scored over three hundred kills, mostly trying to escape from alarms.

Don't you dare type such heresy again.

It is exactly the same words and notes, in clear digital sound. That Meatloaf doesn't sing half of them unassisted is completely irrelevant to its superiority.
