People always say that MGS is the best one, but it reeks of nostalgia to me. It's still a 5/5, groundbreaking game to be sure, but MGS2 and 3 surpassed it in almost every regard -- story being the one and only aspect where there's an argument to be had.

I don't think I agree on MGS2. It's positioned a bit awkwardly between MGS's bold retro simplicity and MGS3's full thirdperson combat in gameplay, while it's just not very well paced in the first half of the Plant chapter.

MGS3, though, I get that.

Yes, which is why they ended up with Naomi being so boring and the voices in 4 were different.

They rewrote the script to be boring as the original translator was suing them and refused to pay the cast more than their 1998 obscure Japanese game salary. Needless to say they phoned it in, but only after David Hayter paid some of the cast extra out of his increased salary just to get them on board.

Plus it plays like someone shoehorned MGS2 into MGS1's levels. It's comically easy.

I've never played Twin Snakes, and although I wanted to at the time, I know I never will. As far as I can tell Konami kind of pretend it never happened, these days?

Some day soon I will give MGS 3 another chance. Played the first PS2 version - hated the silly viewpoint. Played the HD remaster and couldn't get my head around the controls, but I know now that that was my fault :(

Twin Snakes is objectively better than the original in almost every way.

The only valid criticism people have is that the game is too easy if you use the MGS2 first person shooting, but hey guess what, just choose not to use it and you're basically playing a shinier version of the original.

Plus the Grey Fox scenes are sweeeeet in it. I honestly can't recall if thy were redone in terms of choreography etc but I remember them being EPIC.

Indeed, the original translator got given fuck all time to do MGS and pretty much had free reign. When they went to translate MGS2 Kojima took a bizarrely close approach to the translating and demanded certain phrases be translated exactly as he said, which lead to things being much more awkwardly and literally named in 2.

Yeah, Ryuhei Kitamura directed the mo-cap sessions for the new cutscenes in Twin Snakes. (EDIT: @dood)

I guess I can kinda see why people might prefer Twin Snakes, but there's just something...off about it. It's been a long time since I dusted off my copy, but one thing I remember - and it's kind of intangible, but whatever - is...you know that sequence where you're running up the stairs of the communication tower and you don't encounter any enemies for ages? And then you get to the lift and Otacon has a codec freak-out when he realises there are three stealth camo'd-up bastards in the lift with you? Well, the original has this tremendous sense of isolation and loneliness in that sequence. The stark concrete, Snake's footsteps echoing around the stairwell as he makes his ascent, even the visual isolation of the vignetting around the edge of the frame, and it feels for all the world like you're utterly isolated and alone in the middle of the harsh Alaskan wilderness (and yeah, I know you're on the way to fight your brother in a massive attack helicopter, but whatever!). I couldn't for the life of me put my finger on exactly why right now, but I think Twin Snakes lost that somehow. It lost other things, but that one always sticks in my head for some reason.

Ninja being awesome was kinda undone by Snake being able to perform pretty much the same moves, for example jumping on then back flipping off a missile.

Other things that ruined the game were the random placement of MGS2 lockers et al around levels, the enemy AI and Alert system being completely unsuitable for the MGS levels, the wonky lighting that was too bright, the naff facial animation (Downs Syndrome Meryl a notable lowlight), the fact you could leap over gantries to skip big bits of level using MGS2's moves, and yeah, the first person shooting, because "so what if it makes the game comically easy? Don't use it!” doesn't make it mess the game up any less.

MGS was a perfectly crafted gameplay experience, tight and smart. Twin Snakes is the level design from that game mashed up against the gameplay of MGS2. It doesn't work.

I never got past that bit. What are you supposed to do when he napalms the roof after you beat him? I assume there is some kind of safe hiding spot but after a few attempts to find it I gave up.

That bit always annoyed me because the camouflaged men only appear after otacon tells you about them. It'd have been nice if they were already there and if you were wearing your IR goggles you could see them earlier and take them by surprise

Yeah, maybe they were hiding on the ceiling until that point.

Otacon's delivery was ruined in the remake. "LOOK OUT SNAKE, THOSE GUYS ARE IN THERE WITH YOU!!" became "oh noes, some dudes, whatevs." (paraphrased for effect)

I do like The Twin Snakes but... but it just ain't right.

Apart from the guard AI, boss AI, the way Snake moves, health system, the way alerts work, the graphics, sound, voice work, items, weapons, and control scheme, yeah, it's basically the same game.

It would've been fine if the level design had somehow accommodated the new features, but even the patrol routes were step-for-step identical. It's a bizarre experience, like loading up a Doom level in Halo.

And the effing lock-on doesn't work on the stinger missiles.
