I haven't looked into it, but I thought I saw that it was more of a simple miscommunication during the filming. The actors thought the scene would cut before the kiss, so didn't actually do it, and the director wasn't paying attention. So, now we have the technology to patch that fuck-up without inviting everyone back for reshoots.

The second season of Alice in Borderland is quite enjoyable, but I swear they could cut about half the running time if there wasn't in every single game a moment where everything pauses so that one of the hero characters can give a speech about going back to the real world or for an antagonist to ask the "what are you living for" question over and over again.

I really hope it gets a third season though, as the current ending hits two of my most hated cliches of

Spoiler

“It wasn’t real” and “they don’t remember anything now they’re back home”.

If you like golf, or sports docs, Full Swing, made by the same crew that put together F1: Drive to Survive, is, ahem, ace. And is so despite most PGA Tour pros having the personalities of particularly beige dustbins. Except Joel Dahmen, he’s a goof.

The production picked the perfect season to follow too, with the advent of LIV Golf and the fallout with the PGA being very much front and centre.

Only complaint is I wish they’d stop explaining ‘the cut’ in tournaments. They do so perfectly adequately in episode one, but then do so again, and again. And again. Otherwise, it’s a top golf soap opera.

GOLFY, GOLFY, GOLFY!

I started watching a show called Red Rose - think it might have been on the BBC originally. I've watched the first two and it's very good.

It's an English horror drama about a group of teenage friends getting haunted by an app on their phones. The premise is a bit cliched, an app that gives you what you want but then extracts a high price, but it's really well done. It's spooky, the cast are really good and there were a couple of real shocks in the first two episodes.

I'll be watching to end for sure.

I'm twenty minutes into episode one, and so far it's promising but really clunky. The opening scene is laughably clichéd and the following sequence feels like a middle aged person without kids wrote it, even down to the way the kids dress, which my teenage daughter thinks is cringeworthy, and the music choices which are thirty years old. I can't tell yet if the anachronisms are intentional, like they are in sex education, or if it's just been made by people who are even more out of touch than me.

I'll watch the rest of the episode, at least, so it's definitely doing something right, but it feels inauthentic.

Edit: after episode one I'm not enormously impressed. The plot relies entirely on characters not talking to each other about things, and not questioning the fantastic elements of the story. I found the plot contrived and thought there was a real lack of build up to create the tension and fear that the main character's supposed to feel.

It seems to be getting good reviews elsewhere, so don't take my opinion as anything other than my personal thoughts, but  I don't think I'll bother with any more.

It turns out the production company who made Sex Education were involved, so that might be why it looks and sounds so anachronistic. The writers are The Clarkson Twins, who were script consultants on His Dark Materials, did some producing and writing on The Haunting of Bly Manor and wrote for The Wheel Of Time.

There are not one but two Kath & Kim 20th anniversary specials that have just popped up on Netflix. If you love Kath & Kim they are both great, obviously a ton of clips from the show but much more interesting is loads of clips from places on Aussie tv they have appeared in character, awards shows, chat shows etc. Also lots of behind the scenes footage, interviews with people who have been in the show and all that kind of malarkey.

Holy fucking fuck!

I laughed so hard I died, and had to be  revived in the ambulance.

Glad you enjoyed it Sean! Was worried for a couple of moments when he started venturing into a few hot topics but should have had more faith in him. You’re in safe hands with Jim.

I’d never heard of the bloke before but also watched Andrew Santini’s special which I would heartily recommend. He’s like a self deprecating cross between Bill Burr and Ritchie Cunningham.

I read an article about Jamie Demetriou’s new comedy special on Netflix where they were praising it as the Second Coming of Comedy, and having watched it can confirm it’s moderately funny.

Ten Dollar Death Trip. A 40 minute short filmed mostly in Canada I think. About Fentanyl.

I don’t think there’s many things that scare me more than that drug. It was so moving. No one cares about these people. I couldn’t believe how easy it was to reverse a fentanyl OD. Volunteers out on bikes patrolling the alleyways looking for people whose faces hadn’t yet turned black, and bringing them back.

This is just the kind of show where I think the majority of people would be disgusted at almost everything. The candid chat about drugs. The interviews with people selling it. The schemes to help people, including clinics that hand out clean syringes to reduce blood infections, and one that actually gives out heroine in a safe and clean space.

The people interviewed were so kind and genuine. They’re real people and all of them have a story. But they just get dumped in some category others can’t ever envisage themselves being part of. But you can’t know. People are so narrow minded.

Two very Japanese things I watched on Netflix recently, both worth watching:

Twighlight of the Yakuza: This is very odd, a rambling German documentary about the woes being suffered by the traditional Yakuza in the face of extremely harsh legal attention. It also focuses mainly on some older members and ex-members, so it comes across a bit like Last of the Summer Wine, with gangsters. You learn a lot about Yak traditions, very little about what kind of crook things they actually get up to and a lot about Japanese people. Some real oddballs in this makes it a surprisingly touching portrait of a way of life that couldn’t really exist in any other society.

I.W.G.P.: This is even stranger…I’d have to describe it as like Heartbreak High might be if it was a collaboration between Adam & Joe and Takashi Miike. Set in Ikebukuro West Gate Park, it’s a series from 2000 about young adults getting up to fun things while a serial killer does the rounds, from a manga I think. There are 12 episodes, I’ve watched one and I like it a lot.

Caught the new Jim Jefferies, but it wasn't for me. I used to be a fan, but this just felt like a rich old man with nothing to say. The edge of previous shows without the insight.

And the few things he did have to say, especially about his supposed support of LGBTQ groups, didn't really need to be said at all.

He's still a good host though, would be interested to see another series of his late night show.

The Waco doc is OK but doesn't add much if you've read the wikipedia page. The most interesting part of the story is the infighting between the negotiators, who come across really well, and the gun ho types in the FBI who don't appear in the doc, but most of it is people recounting what they saw. They do have interviews with two people from the cult, one of whom still thinks raping 12 years old is OK. She's not challenged on that which I thought was poor.

There's a much better story here about agency incompetence and aggressiveness and how this has disillusioned a whole swathe of American society, but this isn't it.

Don't think I've watched anything on Netflix for a month or two since that random order colours thing.]

Just seen a new spy thing based on a book called the Night Agent which may be worth a watch, but don't know the source, just seen the show runner is the guy behind the Shield so some pedigree there.

I've watched the first episode and it seems pretty good. A couple of dumb decisions and apparent teleportation from people but I think I'll watch it all.

They’ve put out some good stuff, but nothing current or upcoming comes close to equivalent D+ or Paramount content.

I dunno, I think Beef was as good or better than a lot of things I’ve seen this year.

I watched the trailer, aka the intro scene and it looked interesting. But not interesting enough to maintain my subscription.

We’ve just started watching Korean romcom series Crash Landing on You, and it’s really good! It’s about a South Korean heiress who gets caught up in a storm while paragliding and ends up in North Korea. Considering the subject it’s extremely light and frothy. Anyone seen it?

I’m on the last episode of The Night Agent and… it’s been pretty good! At first glance it seems like it might be quite trashy - and I’m not saying it’s not, but it’s also well written, with characters who are given decent motivation. It’s not without contrivances and predictability - but it’s also twisty and exciting enough that that’s all quite easily overlooked and forgiven.
