I found Pale Blue Eye boring and Edgar Allen Poe was annoying in it, kept thinking shut up Poe just shut up, it sent me to sleep 30 minutes in and have no urge to finish it, didn't realise I'd read an article about Netflix cancelling a tv show and how a film like that would impact it. Or realise it was that well watched. In theory I should like it so gonna persevere. 

 

I wonder how many turn away from Netflix because they resent its policy, The Wire, Mad Men and probably Breaking Bad and loads more likely wouldn't have become the all time great shows that they now are with Netflix's thinking. Not even seen 1899 or The Dark! Or Dark Crystal, just think it's a shame.

We pushed through the pain for an hour and 20 minutes and had to give up. I very, very rarely turn something off once I've started but this was among the most boring movies I've ever endured. And yeah, Poe was fucking terrible.

Ha not just me then! I actually loved Hostiles, director's previous film with Bale. Slow burn but its seriousness won me over. 

 

Was looking forward to it, love a murder mystery, love that period, Bale, cool poster, Poe, cool cinematography. Then 10 minutes in I thought I don't actually care about the circumstances of this death that you're probably supposed to be intrigued by and I just wasn't. When you think..ahh I'm not bothered, doesn't matter how he died, it is an issue when it's supposed to drive the plot.

What is done to the main character is pretty horrible, but I was a bit drunk when I wrote that so it may contain some hyperbole.

OK. They burn her repeatedly with hair straighteners. All over her body. You don't see it all, just some of it. Oh, and then she is attacked by one of her teachers who should be looking out for her.

Oof ok that sounds rough, but not Game of Thrones levels of brutal. I'll keep it on my list, but definitely not one for a bad mental health day!

I watched Dog Gone last night. It's based on a true story about a dog who goes missing on the Appalachian trail. It's nothing ground breaking and was a little twee at times but if you have kids, and/or love dogs then it's an easy watch. 

 

I bawled my eyes out.

Weeeeell... it turns out that whilst I wasn't paying attention for a few years, they made several more series of El Marginal. I've just torn through them, and now I have that genuine sadness that comes from the characters' stories being done. I'm going to miss them.

 

The soundtrack is an excellent weird Argentinian synthy ghetto pop called Cumbia Villera, which has taken up residence on my playlists.

 

It's a great prison show, full of strange decisions, frustrations and inconsistencies. But you just have to love the principal cast. So much fun.

There are probably millions of people who just watch any new Netflix movies, because they watch what’s on Netflix.

 

Regardless of that, there are loads of great Netflix original movies.

I saw a trailer for an anime series based on Junji Ito's horror manga that looked interesting - Japanese Tales of the Macabre, it's called - but IGN reckons it's pap, which is a shame. Each episode is its own short story, however, so it may be that you can cherry pick the best ones.

If you're an fan of Ito, this is made by people with absolutely no idea what makes his comics work.

That one really stings still, but a lot of the cast moved on when it was cancelled and as they’re so good are now under contract to other tv shows.

It doesn’t get better. Me and Beth both grew up in the 90’s and were teenagers during the original run of that 70’s show and watched it weekly. It’s squarely aimed at us, and we were doing other stuff around the house so just left it on for the whole ten episodes. There was one relatively emotionally engaging scene and two funny jokes. It’s utterly terrible, and feel like it’s aimed too much at kids to work for people my age. My son left about ten minutes into the first episode because “it was so bad that it made him so embarrassed that he couldn’t watch it”. 
 

Probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen on Netflix.

American Factory 3.5/5 - Chinese company re-opens an old US Carplant to make windscreens. Employee culture clash / Train Wreck is pretty spectacular :blink:

 

Bad Vegan 3.5/5 - Yet another gullible person story that Netflix go after more and more lately. Restaurant owner fleeces money from her own business to fund her husbands "Special Ops" Undercover career (He's actually a gambling addict good at brainwashing). Plenty of opportunities to scream YOU DID FUCKING WHAT? at the TV.

There’s a good Pamela Anderson doc on Netflix at the moment, I think made in response to the show they had on Disney about her and Tommy Lee. She comes across as candid, hugely likeable and prone to making daft mistakes in the pursuit of happiness, but it’s produced by her sons (who also seem lovely too) so it’s obviously very much on her side.

Wasn't the word going around that it was due to COVID regs on set, rather than demands from the stars?

 

If it's due to Lauren London simply not wanting to, it's an interesting conversation. But one that I can't imagine would encourage people to cast her in the future. And one that sees traditionally important elements of performance replaced by CG. Though I can absolutely imagine that'll happen with sex scenes over the next few years, if it's not happening already.
