Just did the full season 3. Great stuff. The animation and ideas are as fresh as ever but I actually feel like the writing has matured a bit since last season (which itself was better than season 1).

 

Standouts for me were the fincher ep (fucking troy baker), Jibaro, and, er, the mini-dead ep was as advertised. :D

 

Jibaro was interesting as I think it was the same studio as did the 'witness' episode from s1 with the live-action overlaid cgi style, but in Jibaro it was much more low-key and in fact a lot of what made it great was just good old fashioned cinematograpy flair. Lots of extreme focal length stuff. Also the choreography. Feels a bit like it couldve been based on real folklore almost, too.

Netflix are on a roll with trying to piss off their customers -

 

Stranger Things Volume 1 will release on May 27 and will consist of seven episodes. Volume 2 will release on July 1 and be just two episodes.

Yeah but why watch that workaday stuff when there's new Love Death and Robots to love?

 

Jibaro was outstanding, Stunning stuff really.

 

Also loved The Very Pulse of the Machine. I'd love to watch that in VR, felt like it was crying out for it at times.

 

Night of the Mini Dead reminded me of Michael Bentines Potty Time, if anyone is old enough to remember that? 

 

Pretty much loved them all, but those are my stand outs this time, for now.

Yeah LD+R was again brilliant. Ep 1 annoyed me a bit but the rest were a good mix and enjoyed all of them.

The last 3 episodes are just another half season where they couldn't figure out how to end the episodes.

 

Part of me is kinda "man, this'll be a slog to get through" but then the other part is remembering how all over the place runtimes of episodes have been for a while. Mandalorian worked with that quite well. Boba Fett was boring as shit regardless of runtime. 

 

I kinda like that storytellers are just leaning into the fact they don't need to adhere to a broadcast schedule and presenting things how they need to rather than artificially splitting it into 16 equal length episodes that cause pacing and story problems.

 

Proof will be in the pudding. Plus it's Stranger Things, which I love, so it gets a pass to do whatever it wants. 

 

As long as it avoids the GoT mistakes, it's all good.

Aside from the terrible first episode (so on the nose it's painful) the new volume of Love, Death and Robots has been brilliant. The Crab one my favourite so far, I thought Swarm had a bad start but the idea was very interesting in the end.

Those Stranger Things runtimes are just stupid. We simply don’t have two and a half hours in a single evening to watch this stuff. (The only nights when we do are at the weekends, when we have to watch more child-friendly fare). We’ll just end up splitting these mega-episodes over two or three nights like they were normal length episodes, in a vaguely unsatisfactory way. 
 

I really miss the days when everything was 45 minutes long. Every show seems to be an hour plus at the moment, and there are nights when we don’t watch anything at all as a result. Still haven’t got around to the final episode of Ozark because it suddenly jumps to an hour and a quarter.

While I agree with the theory that TV show episodes should be as long as the creators need to tell their story - in practice that’s bollocks, the creators can bend their vision to fit inside constraints and, now you mention it, 45 minutes absolutely is the ideal length for an episode of something. 
 

I’ve been watching Severance recently, and while this might be the wrong thread, it’s worth noting how pacey yet considered each 45-minute episode is; and it always leaves you wanting more.

Just pause it at the end of a scene that feels like a natural conclusion, or as someone looks shocked looking at something off screen that you haven't seen yourself yet. It's literally the same thing, but a bit more effort.

Wow! Bad Travelling was fantastic. Slight Dishonored vibes dipped in Lovecraft. Brilliant.

 

I'm a sucker for this type of short story digital animation. Oats Studio and that. 

 

EDIT* Another wow with the Swarm, and the stunning Jibaro. Love this show and its format.

It's not live-action overlaid or rotoscoped, they do it via traditional hand animation. All of Alberto Mielgo's work is done like that, he and his team are just God-Tier talented:

I think that with The Witness we achieved that level of animation. But because our characters are real, I think that people are having a problem really believing that this is not motion capture.

Very much depends on your definition of good. If you like the idea of a monumentally over-the-top reimagining of the lives of two real anti-colonial revolutionaries as a kind of Bollywood superhero bromance and you can stick the 3+ hour runtime then you might enjoy it.

Flipping heck, this new series of GitS SAC_2045 is terrific, it’s 100% GitS vibes and somehow the animation seems even worse than before, which actually makes it better. I’ve only seen one episode and I love it.

I’ve tried watching the first episode several times but couldn’t get into it.

 

Is it really that good?

 

Im getting serious FOMO at the start of every new season…
