Just watched it too, they became a cult, only stepping down when their "glorious leader" told them to, and the hypocrisy of there being a "Blue Lives Matter" flag being waved as the mob are close to killing that cop, fucking hell

You could make a hell of a series out of it. 

I really enjoyed The Platform but the social commentary was beyond on the nose. To the point where at one point, the protagonist says there would be plenty to go around if the people at the top weren't so greedy and the guy he's sharing his cell with says "what are you? A communist?"

 

I seem to remember the ending being a bit crap as well.

The Story of Film: A New Generation by Mark Cousins has appeared in my recommendations this week.

 

Fantastic movie documentary. Started it tonight and it's been incredible so far.

 

Some great insights into films I've seen before and some fucking amazing recommendations for so, so many Ive never heard of but now need to see.

 

Lovely stuff. Can't wait to get back to it soon.

I love it. There are so many absolutely appalling gags, but there's something incredibly charming about the silliness and I can't help but enjoy it all.

 

Every Mike Myers character in it cracks me up, Jennifer Saunders is on amazing form too - I was crying at the climax to her

Watched the first episode and found it really interesting that everyone criticises the response at Chernobyl but the response at Three Mile Island (from the authorities) appears to be the same (though with the obvious difference of there not being a huge explosion etc)

I quite enjoyed The Pentaverate. It has the same glee at completely stupid gags as Myer's old films before they started throwing infinite money at him. And it was quite joke / idea / imagery dense. Nobody is really doing those kind of incredibly stupid and nerdy Police Squad type jokes (like all of Canada being in 4:3 SD, or messing about with the title sequence) these days.

 

The scene with the obnoxious New Yorkers, and Jennifer Saunders utterly hallucinogenic bit later on were probably where it was at it's best, the latter being like something out of the better Comic Strip films.

 

I found Myers' characters were mostly technically good (in terms of makeup and performance) rather than laugh out loud funny. Ken Scarborough was kind of lost on me as we don't have local reporters of that sort over here really. The conspiracy theorist probably worked the best as, well, he's basically an older fucked up Wayne Campbell.

 

The Rupert Murdoch character was pretty much the only one that worked of the Pentaverate themselves, but hardly a comic creation in the league of Dr. Evil. The Powers-style conference room bickering doesn't work when there's no interplay between most of the characters. And cartoonish real world villains like Murdoch and Alex Jones/Joe Rogan are already ridiculous.

 

The secretary (who weirdly reminded me of Pamela Stephenson?) was great. The gross out / scatological stuff seems weirdly quaint these days.

That whole scene is one of my favourite scenes of all time I think. The pentaverate, Garth brooks juice diet, crying himself to sleep on his huge pillow. The whole film’s great too. I don’t think I’ve seen it this millennium but I’m pretty sure I could quote it all.

For people who also have Sky, its worth ringing them up and seeing what deal they can offer you on Netflix, if they bundle it in with Sky.

 

I think I pay £3 for UHD Netflix as part of Sky, and have done for years. It was really easy to link the accounts so you dont lose watchlists, play history etc.
