I never watch their films for plot in the same way I never watched jackie chan films for plot. Both have servicable acting, but that's just a platform for the main draw - reallly creative fight choreography. I dont think I've seen that crew do a fight scene yet that didnt have some sort of novel setup to it.

I watched it on my 12 inch tablet but these films are best watched on a big screen aren't they? The Raid 2 is one of my favourite cinema watches.

I could watch that middle hour of The Night Comes for Us over and over i think. My favourite bit of many was the push out the window. For me gruelling is one vs one fights on concrete, that sustained battering. When it's one vs many and people are dropping easily it's..joyous.

Has anyone seen Veteran? It's described as an action comedy but doesn't do either that well.

Director of The Night Comes for Us also did Killers which i always meant to watch. I didn't trust the action would be worth the drama around it, i go into each of these films wanting to be blown away by something I've not seen before so i don't risk the disappointment...

I sort of hope Gareth Evans feels challenged/inspired by this film and seeks to better it with The Raid 3. Although i want to see his Hard Boiled inspired twin pistol shooting action film he's mentioned in the past as well.

edit: hmm, imdb has it Gareth Evan is rumoured to be directing 'Deathstroke', I'll just click its name see what it's all about.

The movie is based on the popular character from DC Comics.

Noooooooooooooooo. No. no gareth no.   no

edit edit: oh right yeah Gareth has no reason to return to The Raid world. I hope he returns to action films though.

I would've loved to have seen it at the cinema.  A double header of Ong Bank and Where's My Fucking Elephant with a crowd of kung fu movie geeks was the most fun I ever had at the pictures.

Favourite kills/shots/bits where I lol'd into a cabbage/winced

Spoiler

Guy gets his mouth cut like the joker from Ichi the killer, then a big lump of meat crushes his head

Ito's eyebrows

Bob smashes a guy's head to paste with a sign

The little girl stabs a guy in the neck a bunch of times

Iko boots cheese wire girl through a wooden door

Ito shoves a guy's hand down a snooker table pocket and then snaps his arm

Ito caves some guy's head in with a net full of snooker balls and there's lumps of hair and shit on it and the baddies are all like 'fffuuuu'

A small section of fight where it looks like they attached a camera rig to Ito's back while he punches fuck out of folk

Hammer Girl pulls off her finger

They do the 'matrix revolutions' camera on the fist shot for someone punching a piller by mistake and it makes a big clang

The whole final fight, Ito gets a stanley knife through his fucking face

I watched Headshot last night, it's not as good but the fight sequences in the bus and police station were great.

It's the Theatrical Cut though. I think the extended editions are now the definitive versions of the films, personally. You'd be forgiven for thinking the extended versions are the ones on there when you look at the Theatrical running times though.

I saw a fantastic Netflix Original film yesterday called Divines. Really moving French flick about two young women in the Paris banlieus who want to make it out. I think it was the director’s first film and it’s hugely impressive - it dances the tricky lines between gritty storytelling, joyful comedy and some stark brutality with real assurance, and it fizzes with raw energy throughout, due to some excellent performances.

A real gem.

Do the hobbits jump around on the bed for twice as long in the extended version?

I recently watched all three LOTR extended edition films. When I first saw them I thought the first one was poor but the other two much better; now I can't get on with any of them. For me the BBC radio dramatisations tell that story a million times better (as do the books, of course). I also really liked the animated film, though it's years and years since I watched that.

I find the LOTR films really suffer by comparison to the source material. If I’ve not read them recently I quite enjoy the films, but if I’ve got the books in recent memory the movies just seem so hamfisted it’s unbelievable.

I watched Wind River at the weekend. Didn't really know much about it, but I really enjoyed it. A small, well written story with some nice dialogue. No spoilers, suffice to say it was engaging, beautifully shot and Jeremy Renner was excellent.

The wife and I watched Pad Man a couple of days ago. When she gave me the synopsis, I was ready the spend the evening on my phone. But I really enjoyed this very emotional tale of a poor man from India struggling to develop a low-cost sanitary pad. It was bittersweet and amusing without being saccharine or twee, and is based on a pretty remarkable true story. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed Wind River except for the whole pulmonary haemorrhage due to cold air thing.

Its not a thing.

I saw this directly after watching the other alaskan-set film, Hold The Dark. That didnt work very well in Wind Rivers favour for me, tbh, mainly due to the more formulaic story and the less interesting cinematography.

What I did sort of like about wind river was towards the end

where they briefly subverted the trope when the obvious expendable redshirt actually called out the obvious shifty badguys, and then they defused the subsequent mexican standoff, for about five minutes anyway. That was a sort of interesting little moment tbh, one of those rare moments where a 2d background character actually exerts the amount of independent thought you might see in real life. Bit like if in a horror film someone was about to go down to the dark unlit basement and then went 'actually, maybe not, that seems unwise'.

Nora Twomey! In fairness, Netflix have the finger on the pulse.
