@kerraig UK Why do you think Netflix puts out so many stinkers? It’s not like the directors they work with are amateurs (in some cases). Do they just not give enough support or challenge to directors? Are they too willing to let directors make the script they’ve had at the bottom of their drawer for years , without wondering nobody else wanted to make it?

Because they're picking up stuff that's being shipped around and turned down by studios. Netflix is a film makers last resort (when you're of a certain calibre).

Film makers want their films to play in cinemas. So if it's a no brainer movie it'll get picked up by someone who will provide that

I thought Apostle was very good. Strong acting throughout, a visual treat with some really nice shot composition, and nasty as all fuck. It didn’t drag whatsoever for me. In fact, two hours ten flew by.

If I had any complaints they’d be some slightly iffy sound mixing, with dialogue getting a little bit lost once or twice, and one or two overly CGI’d bits, but I’m nitpicking.

Dear God Malevolent was so boring an uninspired. A bit like Open House, you watch it and just think "what's the point in this?". Unfortunately tonight was my wife's pick and she chose that. She sucks at picking films.

I think a few of the Netflix originals I've seen are 2 thirds of the way to being decent but end up with something missing. Sometimes that's a bit intagible like Apostle and at other times it's something like they just forgot to finish the story like Hold the Dark. And then there's the likes of Tau and Mute which I love from a visual or futurism perspective but don't hang together super well.

Anybody else watching Big Mouth? Season two is just out. I'd not really noticed it previously but my daughter's (15 & 25) bugged me to watch it and fucking hell I think it's hilarious. I totally rinsed season 1 and so far season two hasn't disappointed. It's totally crass, got some ace messaging, doesn't hold back, breaks the fourth wall with aplomb and is generally a fun frolic through adolescence with swearing and the hormone monsters.

I fucking love it and Season two is even better the first.

Maya Ruldoph as the female hormone monster is my favourite character, though Andrew's dad is also so funny.

It's A Quiet Place but with sight being the danger, instead of sound. Sandra Bullock, John Malkovich and more.

The book is excellent and I wondered how on earth they would film it when I heard they were making it. There's an awful lot in that trailer that suggests to me they've struggled, and to be honest there's also some really, really significant changes shown too. The structure of the book itself is important too - again, be interesting how they translate that.

The Night Comes For Us might not be as good as The Raid but its probably the most hilariously slapstickly violent movie ever. Absolutely loved it

It went on a bit too long for my taste. I could even go as far to say it was gruelling at times, especially the final scenes*, but it's almost too hilariously violent to take seriously.

*

Spoiler

It veers into horror territory with just how over the top and violent it is.

Night Comes For Us made me think what is the most action packed film ever (in terms of percentage of duration of film being action). Much preferred it to Headshot, which settles into a boring and predictable one on one fight over and over. TNCFU switches between multiple one against many fights and it's pretty thrilling. Even if there is no particular attempt to construct an action scene we've not seen before. So i relished the violence, i want some extremes, some reason to endure it. Also enjoyed the multiple protagonists, the passionately insane one had a lot of personality, as did the cigarette smoking one actually. It was not straight forward in that way. Also introduced a lot of mysterious villains barely distinguishable from each other.

A film can have a wafer thin setup and plot but I'm still sort of overwhelmed by the drama, people all bloodied and wrecked, death and carnage all around them as they barely survive to take some more guys out as they sacrifice their life.

Well i wouldn't put it up there as one of the greatest martial arts/action films ever, but i liked it more than others I've watched in the last few years, like No Tears For The Dead, Coin Locker Girl, The Villainess, Confidential Assignment, Headshot, Veteran, The Berlin File, Drug War...most of which are highly rated and were successful at the box office.

Veteran for instance i was really psyched for, but I'd barely recommend it as containing anything worth seeing. 4th all time highest grossing film in Korean cinema history though. 13 million admissions in 3 months in a country of 51 million is...a lot isn't it.

Night Comes For Us is silly as all martial arts films are. There are easier solutions than having fights.
