After seeing the trailer a few months back, I read Hold The Dark. I wasn't hugely impressed - it was a nasty, nihilistic novel without anything interesting to say about anything. Having just finished the film, I think it is a pretty good adaptation of the book. The problem is, that makes for a nasty, nihilistic film without anything interesting to say.

The film ends slightly differently to the book, but not in any way that matters.

It was well acted and directed, but I didn't like it at all.

Any decent horror flicks on Netflix at the moment? I’m looking for a couple that would make a good Halloween double bill, last year we had the Steven King’s It tv movie and Isabelle Adjani/Sam Neill weirdathon Possession, so that sort of thing would be good.

Cloud Atlas had been added. I think it's a bit marmite but I really like it.

The book absolutely thrilled me when I read it years ago. It's a twisting, jumpy, wonderful read.

I'm really glad that I'd read it before I watched the film though, because I would not have had the first idea what I was watching had I not.

Taking nothing away from the film there, it's pretty spectacular - but much harder to get to grips with than the book in my opinion.

Ozark. Really enjoyed season one. Some great performances,  particularly from Laura Linney. Season two is stretching things a little and the more I watch the less convinced I am. I'm up to episode seven and will stick with it, but it's not at the same level as series one.

How about a double bill of It Follows and Train to Busan?

Thanks! I love From Beyond, but watched it again quite recently. I’ve just got Prime and wanted to watch Train to Busan, I had no idea it was on there so that’s a bit of luck...don’t know It Follows though.

Watched the live action Bleach movie on Netflix last night. Really enjoyed it!

I've seen the anime, but am no fanboy, plus that was about 15 years ago now so I'm not going to go in depth into the accuracy or anything, but I feel anyone could go in cold and enjoy it - particularly if you enjoy the Persona games and fancy something with that kind of feel with an added pinch of The Matrix.

There was just no need to make Malevolent a sympathetic character. A lot of the Disney live action remakes seem to come at things from the wrong angle, thinking that we're all fascinated by the tortured backstory of every single character on screen. The beauty of fairy tales is that you can suspend your disbelief and a person can simply be a bastard because they're a bastard. Don't invite me to your party? BAM, I've just put a curse on an innocent baby who had nothing to do with this because I'm a complete bitch. That's all the original was. Retrospectively tacking on a backstory justifying how she was really just trying to do good all along simply doesn't work and undermines Sleeping Beauty's story in the process. It's unnecessary and unconvincing.

Can't wait to find out what drove Jafar to evil in the Aladdin remake.

The Quincy Jones documentary is very good - maybe a bit long but he's got a hell of a lot to fit in

I did know of his big band and jazz background but didn't really realise how big and how influential he'd been for so long

Like most of these things it does airbrush him - if you know nothing of him he comes across as a bit too nice and easy going - I'd always read he was a piece of work and used to terrify Michael Jackson.

Hmm just watched Apostle. Good but not great, some wonderful imagery in places, and some viciousness, but falls someway short. Good turn from Michael Sheen.

Yeah, I've just finished watching it. It's not bad, just not great. Lucy Boynton was wasted, Dan Stevens was odd and Michael Sheen was great (as he almost always is).

The story was good, but no better than that. It was too long, as well.

I enjoyed it a lot more than Hold The Dark though.
