Jesus, both great but you need to go watch something heartwarming and uplifting quickly (also, have a shower)

Try Sing Street or Hunt for the Wilderpeople and report back, let us know you’re OK.

Anyone who hasn't seen this yet is missing out on an absolute gem of a film. I watched it on my own on a Friday night, then watched it again on the Saturday and made my wife join in (she loved it). It's wonderful and genuinely laugh out loud funny in places. One of the best movies I've seen on Netflix.

I thought Nightcrawler was pretty garbage really. I mean it’s definitely watchable b-movie fare, but the notion that he becomes some successful newshound by standing a bit closer than everyone else made the whole thing ridiculous I thought.

I also watched John Wick this weekend. Decidedly underwhelming I thought, given the love it gets here. Some funny bits though.

It's been a while since I watched Nightcrawler, but is that all he did? Just stand a bit closer? I thought it was because he was willing to do whatever it takes, to go places that no-one else would go to, a sociopath who didn't give two fucks about anyone other than himself. Yeah, it's trashy in a lot of ways. But it's beautiful trash.

Yes, he does other stuff, some of it equally nonsensical (ie his chance of getting away with the thing at the end would be less than zero, so how he ends up with two vans and interns is just silly), but the whole premise of the film is predicated on him being the only person who has realised if you stand two foot closer you get closer footage.

It’s just a dumb film - and there is nothing wrong with that because it’s fun with it, but that’s all it is. Beautiful trash (in my view) would be something like Spring Breakers - and Nightcrawler is no Spring Breakers.

On a separate note, just finished watching the third ep of Wild Wild Country, and am nuts about it. Absolutely superb doc, the sort of thing that makes your Netflix sub feel like a bargain.

I don’t understand why Game Over, Man has such terrible reviews.

It’s not the greatest comedy by any means, but if the idea of a slapstick, gross-out, stoner comedy homage to Die Hard is at all appealing, I can’t imagine you’d be disappointed.

The trailer looked decent but I bailed after less than 30 minutes. It was absolute dogshit.

And I liked both the show they did (Workaholics?) and the Groundhog Day romcom the short one was in that's on Netflix.

Watched and thoroughly enjoyed Bullet Head last night. It's listed on imdb as a crime, drama, thriller, but this was a horror flick for me, with a fucking beast of a dog hunting three guys hiding out in an abandoned building after a robbery. I loved how everyone had their backstory moment (even the dog). Good cast and performances too. Strange film to find a multiple Oscar nominee and a best actor winner in though!

Absolutely loved it. Knew nothing about the story going in and it blew my mind.

Fancy the pants off Sheela too...

Nightcrawler is much more subtle and clever than that. It's the modern bastard cousin of Ace in the Hole, or even Donald Trump. It isn't about standing 2 feet closer, it's about not giving a shit about manners or mutual respect. It's about flouting the rules in such a brazen way that you disarm your competition because they're still playing by the rules.

SPOILERS BELOW,

He doesn't succeed by being closer. He turns down a partnership with Bill Paxton and that turns out to be a mistake, because Bill partners with someone else, has two vans, then beats Gyllenhal to the next big scoop. It's what Gyllenhal does in that moment that secures his success. With his competition, with his partner, and with his boss at the station and with the next scoop that secures his future.

Nightcrawler is a noir classic full of brilliant insight into the American mentality, ethics in business and the modern desire for car crash theatre. I sort of agree that it's also trashy, in that it is about our base desires and it's filled with big melodramatic leaps, but fuck me it's so well written, shot and acted, and so razor sharply observed. Spring Breakers is kinda fun I guess, in a totally disposable way. Nightcrawler is vital.

Naturally I couldn’t disagree more! The plot doesn’t stack up at all, and I think it makes a series of fairly trite observations in a fairly obvious way.

I enjoyed it a lot, but it’s not worth a second watch for me. Compare it to a (relatively) modern contemporary film noire classic like To Live and Die in LA, for example - that flick gives more insight into the American mentality in any two minutes you choose than Nightcrawler does over a whole film.

But if you like it, you like it, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I do love To Live and Die in LA. Superb flick.

But I think you're giving Nightcrawler short shrift. I think the plot is pretty tight. The film doesn't suggest Gyllenhaal wins. The final scene is likely only a couple weeks later. Probably still an ongoing investigation. Which also feeds into the whole fallacy of the American dream. Trump screaming NO COLLUSION while the investigation is still ongoing. it's indicative of that character, he's constantly in motion, constantly scheming.

Yes, you could be right. I can just remember thinking at the end ‘you what?!’, and mentally downgrading it. I’d been in total suspension of disbelief mode for the whole movie, because it does tell a nice story, and then that silly ending made me feel like I’d wasted my time a bit.

I do hear that. But i've watched it about 5 times now and I am a hyper critical uber critic of suspension of disbelief usually. But it gets a pass from me. The last time we see the cop chick she has a "I will fucking nail you motherfucker" look on her face. She's not finished, but he's just gonna keep those blinkers on, not looking around at the increasing severity of his crimes, and carry on marching forward until he wins.

Like the Talented Mr Ripley, or a ponzi scheme.

I really do think it's a modern classic.

I'm sure you have, but have you seen the films of John Dahl? The Last Seduction and Red Rock West? Some fucking lovely noir going on there.

No! I mean yes to Last Seduction, but I’ve never gotten round to watching Red Rock West, which I’ve always wanted to watch. Is that on Netflix?

I dunno where it is, but do try to track it down. It's Nic Cage and Dennis Hopper so don't expect subtlety, but it's so rich.

Not too interesting, but I see they've changed the name of the Kids section to Children. I wonder what discussions went on to consider that was the more appropriate option.

Negative Larry Clark associations.

I found Sheela incredibly charismatic. I would definitely have been in her Jesus house, being persuaded to do some stupid shit.
