It'll be hulking around the ridiculous boxes of delivery that used to turn up.

God, I miss working for GS.

We laugh, but then you remember how heavy launch 360s and PS3s were. No joke getting 60 boxes containing 2 machines in 1 box at xmas and lugging them up a flight of stairs from the service yard !

Technically, I went out with another member of staff in my GAME days.

Them OG PS3s were an absolute joke of a console! In my store the stockroom was two massive flights of stairs from the shop floor!

I loved that store. My pre-owned window was always great.

Even that experience is a relic now, none of the supermarkets around me are 24 hour anymore and the petrol station outside of opening hours is pay at the pump. But like you say with high streets expensive to go to due to parking charges their footfall of casual shoppers must be way down.

Argos is the bricks and mortar place to go for cheaper games these days, the supermarkets are the same price as Game with an extremelylimited, vestigial range.

I love this photo :D I bet you had all the latest insider info on l33t games that were coming out, and denied casual gamers this info on a daily basis when they visited the store.

Is this ryodi doing a deKay or am I the deKay because every fucking supermarket seems to be 24hr. (Except when religion says they can't be for some reason)

Fantastic

The weird and funny modern Game pricing that you guys post all the time (new for £ 24.99, buy pre-owned for only £ 31.99!) suddenly makes a lot more sense with that kind of customer :)

The big Tesco stores near me that used to be 24 hour closes at midnight now. Clearly there's still a market for 2am shoppers where you live.

The vast majority near me don't open 24hr now, whereas they all used to. It's midnight at the latest.

Ha I think you gave our casual customers too much credit...they couldn't give a toss about what I'd say! We used to sell used PS2/XB/GC games, £7.99 each or 4 for £20.

I'd have folks come up to the till with 3 of them,so in the interests of good customer service, point out...

"These are in the 4 for £20 mate"

"But I only want these 3"

"Fair enough but you could literally pick any other game and pay nearly £4 less. You could then trade it back to me immediately for a credit note if you really can't find anything you like, so you can get a few quid off your next purchase"

"Nah i'm alright"

"£23.97 then please"

I’ve seen customers getting really angry with shop staff who point out similar offers trying to save them money.

People are dumb.

Shame you can't just scan a 4th and stick it in a bin ready for competitions or charity donations or something.

Corporate policy ruined retail, I couldn't pull half the shit now I did in 2003-2006.

I've said before (even when I worked there) that Games biggest problem is accessibility. It used to be easy to pop into Game to pick up Fifa or whatever, while you were looking in the shops, or out on a lunch break.  Now the high street is quieter than ever and you're probably not standing in the high street as much as you used to.  In order to shop at Game, you have to get there. Have you tried to park your car near a high street store recently?

Sports Direct have all these out of town big stores that it's easy to drive to one, park your car for free and pick up Fifa from there. Compare that with the gridlocked one-way system, pay and display parking, walk through town and back to the car.

I definitely posted this at the time (somewhere in this 8 year old thread that has been tinkering on being prophetic for a long time) that it really freaked me out when I left Game, after working in a store that was considered to be doing well.  I was bored, watching Question Time and Grand Theft Auto 4 was being released at midnight, so I thought about going to pick one up.  I hadn't pre-ordered but I thought, well, I wasn't doing anything else, so sod it.  I got in the car, headed towards town, got some petrol at Asda on the way and thought, I wonder if Asda are selling it.  Got into the shop and there was a long, snaking queue all around the front of the store.  It was packed. There must have been 300 people in there - the queue went all around the cafe, the clothing, all over the place and there was a couple of  older ladies behind the tills opening the delivery.  They were not games experts like Game pride themselves on, and they didn't need to be.  All they needed to do was take money and shift the stock.  They waited until 12.01am and started to ring through the transactions.  This was the key thing for me.  Everyone in the queue had a credit card, debit card or cash in their hands.  There were no deposits, pre-orders or trade-ins to slow things down and the transactions were really quick.  1 item, 1 payment, done, Kthanksbye. The ridiculous long queue moved fast. I got my copy pretty quickly and just imagined the state of things at Game, with everyone trading in their old shit, staff checking disks for scratches, looking in the book to cross out names on pre-orders and messing about with deposits.

After 15 years at working for Game, that was the moment I realised I had been brainwashed into thinking that they were a really really big player.  Sure, they were the last surviving chain store specialist retailer, but at the time, I'd have been pleased to take 100 preorders, and we probably would have had a handful of extra copies to put on the shelves. To see the local supermarket with such a long queue of people, at MIDNIGHT for crying out loud, all of whom were just simply buying it from the shop, no preorders, no posters, no signs.  To Asda it was just another product, they just sold a shitload of copies, business as usual, as straightforward as selling a lettuce.

just to add even more context to that. I went to most likely another Asda in another part of the country for GTA4 at midnight and it was the same story there.

I also remember getting MGS5 from GAME on a random high street. I came back to my car after 10 minutes to find a £35 ticket. No parking on that side of the road before 1pm!
