Just don't use it for that season 4 two-parter near the end...

Without spoilers, when is that? In still on season 1 so a while to go yet.

Actually, you'll know straight away when it happens, but it's the episode immediately after one with lots of green women in it. :)

You'll grow to love the theme tune by that point anyway. ;)

Caught myself humming it to this week, real earworm.

I just remember seeing in the news once that they were playing the Enterprise theme to the people on the International Space Station, around when Enterprise was starting.

They can't escape. Those unfortunate souls.

Imagine BEING IN SPACE!!! tainted with that moment.

I didn't mind the theme song too much, after getting over the initial reaction. The third season remix was somehow even worse though.

I watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture for the first time last night. Hoo boy. That’s seven hours of my life I’ll never get back.

It's a movie of two halves, really, isn't it? The first half is all sweeping slow-motion Enterprise porn and old men gazing meaningfully into the middle distance - it's got a certain stately grandeur about it and it's actually quite nice to see a sci-fi movie that's been inspired by 2001 rather than, say, Star Wars. While I wouldn't say it was great entertainment, it was at least admirably odd and I was quite on board at that point.

Then the second half is basically a really bad episode of Star Trek stretched out to interminable length and it lost me completely.

That’s true... It’s often a very character based series, and there’s so many great characters, so it’d be a shame to miss those moments. It’s definitely a slow burner series as well, intentionally or not, and skipping too much of the minor stuff will dullen the impact of some of the more dramatic and series-defining episodes.

I’m midway through season 6, and I think it was the correct choice to rewatch it! It’s held up so well in many ways. I’ve skipped the minimum amount of episodes (the obvious stuff missed, all Mirror Universe eps apart from the first one, Q-Less, the Lwaxana Troi episodes, etc) and it’s been worth it.

What I found amazing was that my girlfriend really loves the series. Properly enjoys it. She liked Discovery to start with, and one of the films, but fell asleep during others series. She’s even occasionally quoting DS9 characters in everyday conversation. Anyway,

I’ve come to the conclusion that I like DS9 rather than Star Trek in general. Even TNG I found a struggle to keep an interest in; I tried rewatching it a while back, it hasn’t aged well in terms of writing, structure and thematics, and the characters in TNG are often very flat archetypes. One DS9 gets in its stride, it’s leagues above TNG.

Noticed how many episodes of DS9 work perfectly well as parables about events that hadn’t happened yet when the show was aired, 9/11, the war on terror, state encroachment on civil liberties, Trump, press freedom, isolationism, the post-2015 rise of nationalism, and so on. It’s a testament to how well written DS9 was in places, abstract enough to be universal but also obvious enough for the viewers to catch the message intent. It’s a night and day difference to the hamfisted and juvenile way that Enterprise did Space 9/11 and space war on terror a few years after DS9 ended.

Roll on an HD remaster (I hope), and I’ll be there day one for another marathon watch through...

I was a bit disappointed by What We Left Behind.  It is pretty good but given how long it has been gestating for and how much hype it had it is not perfect.  In its two hour running time, I think there was time given over to frivolities and fan input and views that I would have preferred such time spent elsewhere. It definitely didn't help that I had to stream it and the system was rubbish and I had to screen mirror it from my phone in pretty poor quality.  A proper HD screening might be much better simply as a result of that.

Peter Allen Fields, the man who wrote amongst other episodes Duet, In the Pale Moonlight and co-wrote The Inner Light. Has passed away. :(

Some of the best SciFi ever shown on TV there. A very talented writer.

In The Pale Moonlight really highlights how different Sisko is to the other Captains, very "un-trek" but great episode and what makes DS9 stand out amongst the other Trek shows.

Duet was probably the best episode of Season 1 of DS9 and The Inner Light lead to this
