Not having directional audio is a massive disadvantage

Any stereo headphones.

That was a quick turnaround - glad you got sorted.

Yeah, I completely forgot my Gold headset works. Works flawlessly, as far as I can tell - even the mute mic button.

I’m currently making my way through the “get X eliminations” in various locations challenges and it’s really helped.

I installed this on my Switch for my kids last night. This morning my youngest got a solo win on his 3rd game. He's 10 :D  My eldest has passed the 200 win mark and is on the way to 250. He plays squads solo for fun and likes to win games with trap kills. My kids make me so proud. Kind of.

I'm using a Hyper X Cloud headset on Switch and PS4 - it has a mic and directional audio on both.

I think the coloured weapons improves the RNG, so the damage you inflict after the first shot will be less inconsistent, or cause more HP damage, with purple and gold weapons being the best... compared to blue, green or grey. But it's still worth getting stuck in even if you only have a grey/green weapon.

Its just bloom, guns have a cone pattern of accuracy - a white AR can be as accurate as a Gold scar! However the guns do different damage per bullet -A gold scar head shot does more damage than a white AR, the damage is stepped..

White

Green

Blue

Purple

Gold

Gah, managed a 5th place in Solo with 3 kills. As soon as it came to building, I fell apart, I really suck at that part

I got 3rd by just hiding in a house. Then died the second I came out the door.

I tried to win a fight by ingeniously building a two story tower, but he just made a ramp and came in over the top. Not sure I get this part of the game yet.

Also, the weird way sound works still throws me. I was in the attic of a house I had sealed up and could distant hacking noises, so wasn't too worried. I moved forward a bit to do a chest and suddenly I was being shot from directly behind - The distant hacking I'd heard was actually the wall right next to me, which was now a hole.

I got 4th by hiding in a shed. That shed put up with a lot before a rocket launcher through the window. I think you can build on top of stuff like that and it will just replace what’s there. Should have just turned it into 4 walls when they figured out where I was.

I remain terrible at this, but maybe it's for the best. Last night I was playing the new five-teams-of-twenty mode, and I'd just made it into the second safe zone. As usual I'd put together a pretty decent set of items that I was fully expecting to have ripped out of my hands the moment I saw an enemy.

But as I turned around, I saw someone crossing a river just ahead of the storm. It was quite a distance, but I popped off a couple of shots from an assault rifle and landed two hits, after which they backed behind a tree.

The storm was moving on, so I knew they'd have to do something, and eventually they ran out towards the hill cover opposite. I knew I could hit them from where I was, so I took my time and killed them halfway across the river. The storm stopped just short of their corpse, so I ran down to loot.

Bear in mind this was after two safe zone shrinkages, and I, a complete oaf, had cobbled together two blue weapons, a purple, a gold and 50% armour.

The corpse was carrying two things: a small pile of wood and a small pile of stone. My first thought was that I'd killed a seven year old who was just trying to learn how to build, but I quickly remembered that it was just as likely to be a grown human man, like me a couple of weeks ago, and I was probably going to be comprehensively slaughtered by a seven year old before the match was through.

Still, I felt bad, you know? And my opportunities for not feeling bad in Fortnite are few and far between.

I just don't build, basically. Ever. I mean I do if I need to get up or down a mountain or something but otherwise I just try and blend into the environment using whatever cover is available. To me those tower builders just give themselves away.

...and then win the game.

You need to be able to do a minimum of building to get any kind of consistent success in this.  Certainly on PS4, if not on Switch just yet (although I'd be surprised).

You don't need to be a master builder, but it's worth taking the time to learn how to protect yourself from incoming enemy fire, and how to ramp/storm somebody building in front of you.  Even just sticking some walls around you when you need to medkit or open a supply drop will help stop you from getting sniped.

It's weird how when you start playing the building side of it seems redundant, or even annoying/frustrating.  But as you get better it just becomes a natural part of the game, and you wonder how you ever got anywhere without it.

I nevet build and I've won on Solo three times now. Last one I just shot the guys tower and then him whilst hiding behind a tree. He didn't even know where I was.

Thats just Switch tho isn’t it, the days of non building wins on other systems are long gone - you can do it still but Switch is in a very different place at the moment.

My youngest is coming, got her best place in solos, third with three kills and no hiding ;)

Yeah, Switch is like practise mode at the moment, and for me personally that makes it all the more fun. It won’t be long before the level rises though, and that will probably see the end of me getting victories. I’ve never won a standard solo game on PS4.

OK so I've just had my first go on this on Switch tonight.. It's awesome not having a clue what I'm doing! (I'm literally so blind on the game, never watched or read anything about it)

Only thing I want to know is, how on earth to I customise my character? And I don't mean outfits etc, I found that (and I obviously have nothing yet).  But can I at least change myself to a beardy man rather than a Grace Jones lookalike?

I like to warm up on Switch, it’s even better that I have no skins so look like a n00b but while it is good fun it feels a bit cheap and not so fair on the new players learning the ropes - shame no stats tracking as I haven’t made another account.

Without buying skins you can't customise your character at all, you just get assigned a different random default skin every game.

Anyone dipping a toe into this on switch, please post your epic usernames - it's much more fun if you get into a squad game with like minded friendlies :)

The trick with building (I find, anyway) is to start with something easy, like a 1x1 to protect yourself while healing, or a ramp to reach the top of a house.

If you haven't already, enable the builder pro control scheme in the controller settings; it makes building so much quicker. Instead of entering build mode, scrolling to the piece you want, placing it, scrolling to the next bit... you just enter build mode, and tap the relevant trigger or shoulder button twice to place a piece. Takes a while to learn the mapping, but once you do it's a life saver. To get you started, learn to place a quick ramp and wall combo; in combat, whacking down a quick ramp gives you height and cover, adding a wall in front of that protects your ramp. That can all be done in seconds with builder pro - enter build mode then tap left trigger twice and right trigger twice. Boom, you have the advantage.

In a wall/ramp combo do you mean...

a) A wall that ends at the top of the ramp (so the top of the ramp meets the top of the wall)
or
b) A wall that starts at the top of the ramp? (so the top of the ramp meets the bottom of the wall)

I also like to add a floor piece as well, so it’s a triangle. That way if your wall cover and ramp go, depending where you’re building you don’t fall to your doom, and you can jump and quick build a wall and ramp again. Too many times I’ve fallen down a cliff face where I’m building wall ramp cover to shoot dudes below.

Also finding tbe stink bombs invaluable in combating quick build and shotguns. It buggers them right up, usually throw one at their ramp to stop them climbing and if needed another in front to stop a drop down a rush forward. Then wait for them to pop out of one of the sides where you are ready for them, whilst stepping back to maintain some lovely AR vs shotgun distance.

The new creative mode that is coming soon should make all the building stuff a lot easier to practice. My lad is looking forward to this update more than any other updates there have been so far, him and his mates are planning what to build in the sandbox.
