Steam Secret Santa

Recommended Posts

After a spree of gift giving broke out in the Steam thread during the last sale revlob suggested we run a Steam secret Santa, which I think is a great idea so will be sorting it out. Open to all and should be pretty simple to take part, it will be run as follows:

  • To take part PM me a link to your Steam profile by December 15th
  • On December 16th I will randomly assign people and PM you the person you're buying for. Might be a good idea for everyone to join the Rllmuk Steam group, easy way to quickly check profiles then.
  • By December 23rd you need to have bought the game as a gift in your inventory (see picture below) and have traded it to me.
  • I will then send the gifts out on the 24/25th, plan is evening/late on the 24th so they're there to be opened in the morning but depends how many people take part.
  • Price: no limit it's whatever you feel happy with, but please try and have a few games at about £5 that you'd be happy to get on your wishlist, in case people have no idea what to get or don't want to or aren't able to spend more.
  • To stress the wishlist is just there as a backup, you don't have to choose a game off it, if there's something else you want to gift, a game you like or think they'll enjoy do it.
  • If you already have the game I won't be able to send it so I'll PM you and trade it when possible so you can have it in your inventory. If you already have the game just not on Steam you can reject the gift, drop me a PM so I know and I'll trade the game to you. When it's in your inventory you can gift it to others or swap it, should be the Christmas sales so might be able to swap it with others for daily deals etc.

I'm in. Cheers for setting this up, JPR.

On December 16th I will randomly assign people and PM you the person you're buying for. I will also list everyone so people can add everyone else taking part. This way you can easily see the profile of who you're buying for, what they've recently bought and with everyone adding everyone it doesn't give away the secret Santa.

Not to discourage the growth of the rllmuk Steam community, but you shouldn't need to add anyone to your friends list if all you want to do is see their wishlist or look at their recently played games. That's all available via the user's profile page, on the web:

Was more the more the friends have recently bought on the front page I was thinking about, but as you say it's not necessary. I'll change it to suggest people join the Steam group if they haven't done so already as an easy way stalk check these things.

Sounds like a nice idea, I fear that my aged PC might not be up to the task though... Then again, if a game is only a little thing for a fiver it shouldn't be too power hungry (hopefully).

That's actually something I hadn't thought about, if people do have a slightly older PC it might be worth noting in the PM so I could ask people to take it into consideration. No point buying someone Metro 2033 to find they've no chance of running it, especially when there's plenty of great games they can.

Hopefully people will check people's "All Games" list too before buying the gift, but I can still see this happening (and not on purpose).

I'm in, this should be fun :D Do the Steam sales start around then as that'll make things really entertaining!

Clearly I need to work out how to use Steam for features other than simply launching games...........

All you do is when buying something select buy as a gift at checkout and then you can store the game for trading.

The sale started on the 20th last year, so assuming it's about the same time there should be a few days of the sale to buy games.

Would a sort-of newbie like me be able to join in?

If so, count me in!

Of course, open to all.

Just a reminder to all those who want to take part, please make sure you send me a PM with a link to your Steam profile, just makes it all easier to manage.
