The idea is that we now get the second (even better) patch on day one. Win -win.

With the patch I actually want,  the 60fps pro patch,  coming later :(

Combat is weird,  I just killed two level 25 mobs with a level 2 party and immediately dinged level 6!

can you not change languages mid game? would like to try both out.

Yes, although it does reset the game back to your last save with a long loading time.

I've now changed to Japanese voices. It's quite tragic how much more likeable the characters have suddenly become with them - even if it doesn't improve their haircuts. Prompto in particular is so much better. I'm playing a bit where he's scared and it's quite funny to listen to him. In terms of value for money, there's a good argument for playing this through twice with the different voices just to see how the English dub changes (spoils) everything.

There is naturally a downside when it comes to keeping up with what everyone is saying in the heat of a battle, though.

The good news is you get 4 different outfits for each character right out of the gate. I changed it so they look like idiots rather than complete bellends. This is immediately improved the game for me.

The bad news is they didn't fix the framepacing so even though I'm sure it's running at a lovely 30fps it looks more like sub 25.

Is there at least a translation of what they are saying?

I can't believe they fucked the dubbing so much... I expected it would be bad after I heard Gladius talking, but I was hopeful I would be able to power through it. Yet I haven't seen one positive comment about the dubbing. Fucking square amateurs...

Yep, it's fully subbed.

Three chapters in now and I think I can say it's turning into a great game and that it will review well. I don't know if it can be called a great Final Fantasy experience. Half the time it's felt more like Red Dead Redemption x Metal Gear Solid V up to this point. I'm not complaining, though! At my current save point I've already got more things on the go than I can count.

Oh man.

So you can go do a hunt, so I did that and found the enemies.

I nearly turned it off in anger. What's the point in avoiding attacks when you have no warning when they're going to attack? It's just impossible to see with 5-6 enemies and your 3 other team mates running around.

I have family round and they have all gone to bed but I still managed to shout "FOR FUCKS SAKE" before realising.

I was trying to lock onto an enemy (hard lock) but I kept bringing up the map. Constantly going into danger mode which renders you almost useless because r]you can;t really attack.

It was awful.

.....but I shall carry on because I have to believe there is at least something there that takes a bit of getting used too and I'm just doing it wrong. I hope.

I recommend to everyone to watch Kingsglaive and the anime serie before starting the game. Both are of mediocre quality imo but they flesh out the world, the lore and the relationships between prince Noctis and his friends in a very satisfying way. This world may not escape some of the classic FF tropes but it seems well developed with interesting characters and plenty of depth.

Very happy with this so far. just spent a couple of hours mooching around the opening area and loving the whole vibe of it. wait mode is brilliant. You fight like you would in a normal action RPG, but if things are getting too much you just release the thumpstick and everything pauses allowing you to plan your next move.

I'm playing with the English dub and not finding it to bad so far. I'm fine with it, FF has always been a bit about silly voice/dialogue/hairstyles.

Well, 5 hours in I'm completely in love with it. I'm not making any grand proclamations about the overall quality, I only played the first chapter then paused at the start of the second to explore and try out some other stuff. I really, really like the world and design, but overall I love how detailed everything is. After a few hours the combat has gotten harder, more rewarding and more satisfying. But above all, the game is insane. It's OBSESSED with food, and it's genuinely made me laugh and smile more than anything I've played for ages. I'm really excited to play more.

So the screen brightness thing....

I consider my TV to be as perfectly calibrated as it can possibly be and every single game from Bloodbourne to metal gear solid V all show near perfect results with their in-game brightness test cards.

This game requires me to set the brightness to 100 on the game scale to be able to see both pictures in the test card equally.

I actually think the default setting of 50 looks a bit better but I can see I'm losing detail in the darker areas so I've set it to 100.

Maybe they're just counting on people not calibrating their TVs and compensating for the PlayStation's classic over brightness on default settings but many of us would have ( I hope) already compensated for this with our TVs.

It's Sunday so I'm gonna slow things down and chill today. Do some fishing, cruise around while listening to some FF classics, go exploring and grab a few photographs, slaughter lots of beautiful wildlife. Hopefully I can get back in time to play some of this.

The bar is turned off by default which implies they don't want you to see it - why even have a stamina system in the first place?

Another annoyance, I'm on a quest that specifies the monster only shows up at night. Fine, but there seems to be no way of advancing time to a specific point so i'm just standing around doing fuck all in game time until night falls. I can't even grind mindlessly as random battles seem to be largely non-existent.

Honestly trying to keep an open mind with this but the above 2 points are basic quality of life improvements for an open world game.

Well, having watched the "film", I now know how a 2 hour in-game cut scene would feel.  I didn't grasp the motivations of the guards though, particularly the BIG guy.  Is this explained in the anime?

Not really, no. The movie is so badly edited and lacks any proper character development that you rarely understand why people do what they do.

The anime is focused on Noctis and his friends and sheds some light into their relationship.

I couldn't see the white one on any setting haha.

There are so many weird things going on in this game, why do you have a stamina bar that prevents you from running any significant distance when a large part of the game seems to involve you hoofing it on foot?

Protip

Toggle the bar on in the options. Release the sprint button just before it empties. Get a boost of speed and a full bar. Never run out of stamina again!

The real question is "why isn't wait mode toggled on/off with L3 during fights"
