Press release

In this 30-plus hour action RPG, players will enter the gritty and medieval fantasy world of Westeros. As one of two original characters with disparate motivations, both former soldiers of Robert's Rebellion, players will forge alliances and wage battles as they play a pivotal role in the ongoing war for power of the Seven Kingdoms. Their journey will span numerous quests, during which they will interact with many characters and make key decisions that impact the realm.

Standing before the majesty and bitter isolation of the Wall or walking through the streets and alleys of King's Landing, players will not simply pass by locations and characters integral to the series; they will explore and interact with them, meeting and learning about the people and history that defines them and their importance. Key decisions and major events will have meaningful impact on Westeros, allowing the player to witness how the game world evolves over time based on their actions or inactions. Moreover, "Game of Thrones" introduces an innovative "active slowdown tactical combat engine" in which combat mirrors the series' thoughtful approach to war and politics: fighting slows but never stops entirely, forcing the player to make quick, pressured choices before their enemy strikes again.

"The Game of Thrones television series and the A Song of Ice and Fire book series it is based on represent some of the most captivating, original medieval fantasy and drama ever created," commented Shinichi Suzuki, President and CEO of Index Digital Media, Inc. "Its amalgam of bitterly antagonistic rival houses, deeply nuanced characters, intricate political machinations, and breathtaking fantasy--all set within a richly storied world--offers unparalleled realism and raw emotion. We are honored to work with HBO, Cyanide Studios, and the great George R. R. Martin in bringing an exciting action RPG set in this beloved fantasy universe to fans and gamers in early 2012."

"This is a wonderful way for fans to engage with the brand in an exciting and interactive way," stated James Costos, VP of HBO Global Licensing. "ATLUS and Cyanide are leaders in developing world class games with broad accessibility so the partnership was an ideal fit for us."

"Game of Thrones" is currently scheduled to release in early 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. For more information, visit http://gameofthrones-thegame.com. Expect frequent news updates, content additions, and more between now and the game's release!

Developer is Cyanide and publisher is Atlus.

No idea at present if this is some sort of cheap and cheerful shallow rip off or will be a genuinely interesting RPG.

There was an article in the New York press which stated that GRRM has written the story for this.

I think most people would prefer him to stop fannying about with side projects and actually finish writing the books!

This. It always annoys me when I dip into his blog and it kind of reads ...travelled to convention in Australia...got sick on return journey...took 2 weeks to recuperate watching NFL games....just in time to visit the TV series filming in Belfast.

And all those Jokers Wild books get my goat too (I know he only intros or edits but even so).

So, consensus is this will be shit then. Just as well we have Risen 2, Witcher 3 (for the less than master race) and Amalur to look forward to.

Although it annoys me as a reader of his books, I don't blame him at all. If I'd made as much money as he undoubtedly has I'd be doing even less work than he is. Also the Wild Card books are inspired by a p&p campaign that he runs so I imagine in many ways he doesn't see that as work in quite the same way as SoIaF.

The Crusader Kings II mod that is in development seems like a much better way to do a Game of Thrones game. That or a Total War-style game.

In fact, just give the licence to Paradox and have them make an official CKII-esque game of Game of Thrones.

Well, this is out now and the consensus is (unsurprisingly) that it's a duffer, though just falls on the right side of awful so that it is not totally beyond redemption and if you are a die-hard fan of the books you might get something out of it.

Yes, pretty grim judging from some early reviews, but go in with expectations dialled well down and you never know. I've managed to enjoy elements of games such as Venetica, Gothic 4 and even the Rise of the Argonauts so I'll be getting it just to see how the Rpg aspects are handled, and not because of the SOIAF tie-in.

Alec Meer, for Rock Paper Shotgun, gave this a Wot I Think.

And, would you know it, I'm actually sold! Sounds right up my alley, awful voice acting aside. It sounds the right kind of "6/10" - i.e. "filled with good intentions but lacking in polish", rather than the much worse "generic rpg cash-in" that it might have been.

Incidentally, I should probably mention that part of the reason I was so easily sold is that the game is available on PC for the princely sum of £14.99 from Simply Games. Looking forward to seeing what I make of it when it arrives (though how close to its release Simply will actually send it, I do not know).

Anyone else got this on DVD and having trouble with the Autopatcher? It downloads the patch and then just locks up the launcher for me :(

That'll teach me not to get the Steam version...!

Gah I thought this would be a game to avoid but that RPSWIT has sold me too. I didn't really need another game to distract me from doing anything useful. Now the only decision is do I pay the Steam premium for convenience or do I get it much cheaper but with completely pointless packaging and inevitable issues with where/when it gets delivered.

I've been playing this the past few days, seven chapters in so far, and it's really grown on me. It isn't the prettiest or most polished RPG in the world, but the combat goes from crude and annoying to surprisingly tactical and tense once you've levelled up a few times, and more importantly the story is genuinely gripping. Helped a lot by the narrative structure: switching between the two characters works very well, as you pick up bits and pieces from each character that builds into the other's story (and building onto events you already know about from the books); the voice acting is mostly poor, but bearable, and the script carries you through it. Well worth the £15 I paid for it.

I'd second this. Also sold on it by the RPS review and I'm having plenty of fun. It's really rough in an Alpha Protocol kind of way but that sort of adds to the charm. Story wise, if you're into Game of Thrones there's lots to like too. I also nabbed it from SimplyGames (belated thanks here to Wiper!) so I'm sure I'll get £15 of fun out of it.

Kept me enthralled enough to play till now anyway, well once I got the bloody thing to patch :)

Glad to have been of help! I'd say that AP is a good game to point at in comparison - GoT isn't really like a lot of other slightly shonky RPGs, as their appeal usually comes more from their systems, exploration and loot. GoT, like AP, is carried by its plot, and its branching narrative. It lacks the extremes of AP - i.e. the incredible amount of branching and brilliant conversation system, but also the utterly broken gameplay and massive bugginess - but I'd recommend it to much the same crowd.

I've not watched the TV show, and it's been a long while since I read the first two books, but I'm pretty sure that any spoilers that I've come across so far have been from the first book - and, in fairness, there haven't been that many of them in the first place. It's important to have read at least the first book not so much to avoid spoilers, as it is to understand the situation and the world that the game takes place in.

I've not played this, but from what I've read about the game even the two central characters and their abilities are fairly significant 'setting' spoilers from the later books. Specifically books 3 and 5.

To be clear, here's exactly what I'm talking about:

The Red God's 'kiss' to resurrect people, and the very explicit presence of warging into animals.

Not really GoT related but really impressed with Simply Games/Royal Mail service. Ordered Friday morning, arrived Saturday morning with free delivery - was expecting I'd have to wait until at least Monday to try it out.
