The James Bond Series

Recommended Posts

I think The Living Daylights must have the single best action sequence of the entire franchise, when Bond is hanging from the cargo net of a plane...

...trying to defuse a bomb, which is about to explode....

...except he's also fighting the main henchman, Necro...

...oh, and there's no-one flying the plane...

...which is about to crash into a mountain!

It's like a fucking Russian doll of setpieces.

the fact that it's clearly not a russian plane spoils it for me.

I wrote an in-depth guide to the James Bond 007 Secret Agent series of films for now-defunct internet cultural hub Goaste. It only goes up to just before the release of Daniel Craig's Casino Royale remake, but I have linked to it below if you wish to peruse it. Warning spoilers etc.

A complete guide to James Bond

You guys need to watch that thing on BBC3 where the iPhone advert voice man nitpicks all the bits in films where the liquid level of a drink changes slightly between shots until Ragnorak.

I just read your post in his voice.

Then I did that face he does.

The corkscrew stunt in MWTGG is one of the best stunts ever filmed... I remember watching a making of where they were explaining how a stunt like it had never been done before, how it was going to be pulled off... this being back in the day when stunts were just a combo of really really mental men and physics...

and then they go and ruin the thing with that bloody sliding whistle.

So who was the best baddie? I always thought Goldfinger was great but had a lot of time for Christopher Lee's Man with the Golden Gun.

Blofeld was always good for the money too, but the Octopussy bad guy was as forgettable as the ones in Brosnan's bonds (and Craig's for that matter).

Blofeld and Goldfinger are iconic but just as equally awful as they are great. Red Grant, Alec Trevelyan and Francisco Scaramanga are arguably the best, though I have a soft spot for Dr Kanaga simply because he uttered the immortal lines "names is for tombstones, baby" and "take this honky outside and waste him", and had Baron Fucking Samedi backing him up.

Honourable mentions to Max Zorin and Franz Sanchez for being hilariously 80s.

For me James Bond is one of those series I can endlessly rewatch but I never seem to make a conscious decision to sit down and watch them on dvd or on bluray. It's always on tv, usually when I'm chatting to friends or family and we are like 'oooh there's Bond on' For me my two favourites are License To Kill and For Your Eyes Only. I loved Dalton as Bond and am still annoyed he only did two films and I loved FYEO as it's very low key and showed Roger Moore could do serious Bond no problem. It's easily his best Bond film for me and it has the best Bond kill from the entire series. From Russia With Love is probably my favourite Connery film and Goldeneye would be Brosnans. Also really liked OHMSS too.

Ack you know what ? Fuck it. I really like all the Bond films with the exception of Quantum Of Solace. It's the only one I really actively dislike and it's more or less purely because of the editing than any actors in it.

There's only one thing that's ever really irked me to an extent in relation to the Bond films. The death of his wife is consistently one of the main things in the series that REALLY hurt Bond and which you can see reflected every time she is mentioned in any of the films. Yet Diamonds Are Forever sorts this out within the first 5 mins and trivialises it faaaaaaaaar too much for my liking. It deserves a full film of Bond being really emotional and pissed off, maybe too emotional and violent trying to get to Blofeld. Well that's just what I expected and wanted. Maybe I'm being a bit unfair and harsh but it always felt a bit too brushed off for my liking.
