I like FYEO. They drew back from the silliness of Moonraker. They had to. Where do you go after you've gone into space? I particularly like the henchman death scene where Bond gives the car an extra nudge over the cliff with his foot.

I’ve only got AVTAK to go on my Moore rewatch, but so far I’ve loved them all apart from TMWTGG which I have never thought much of.  Controversially, I don’t rate TSWLM that highly in the Bond pantheon.

Craig's Bond is just not fun and neither are the films. EON seem obsessed with the idea of making Bond serious when he never was (on film). When Craig's Bond does try to stray into humour it is just uncomfortable to watch.

 

I don't get this attitude that the Craig Bond films are not "fun". They may not have loads of double-entendres and broad slapstick, and their aims to give Bond an arc and deeper relationships might focus on the grimmer side of the character, but that doesn't stop them being entertaining.

 

Yes, when the Craig films try to do the kind of comedy you might find in the earlier films, it's an awkward tonal fit (like the "he's keen to get home!" comment when he jumps on the train in Skyfall). But they have other moments of playfulness/levity that I'd describe as fun:

  • In Casino Royale: the escalation of the building site action scene is fun, M's line "Christ, I miss the Cold War" is fun,  "Shaken or stirred?/Do I look like I give a damn?" is fun, the bad guy getting a nail gun to the eye is fun.
  • In QOS, Bond interrupting the Quantum meeting at the opera, and the torturous death he inflicts on Dominic Greene are fun.
  • In Skyfall, Bond's meeting with Q, the bit with the komodo dragons and the handprint gun, and "it's called a radio" are fun.
  • In SPECTRE, the weird little scene where he points a gun at a mouse was fun.

I should point out that's not intended to be a comprehensive list, before someone says "ah, you could only think of one fun thing from SPECTRE? :eyebrows:"

I meant is not fun in the sense that it's not enjoyable or exciting, as opposed to punning.

Craig's quips just seem a bit mean and he comes across as a snarky smart arse. Moore and Brosnan might inappropriately give you a bloody good seeing to in the wreckage of a baddie's lair, but it's all a bit of harmless fun at the end of the day. A smirk and a raised eyebrow went a long way in those days. Craig on the other hand has a threatening air of sexual inappropriateness, like it's going to be a bit of a one-way street if you even agree to it in the first place. I think the writers need to move away from Bond bedding women who've just revealed they were victims of human trafficking for a start. Hanky panky is the watchword.

I thought Fallout was quite poor and continued the trend of the even numbered films being a bit rubbish. I don't think it's been a consistent series by any stretch, just like Bond, really.

Fallout's action scenes are fantastic, but there's something that stops me from truly loving it as much as most of the other M:I films. I think I'm kept at a distance thanks to the complexity of who's doing what in exchange for what, and all the layers of double-crossing (which reaches Pirates of the Caribbean 3 levels at times). Plus the fact that it doesn't have a "planning a heist, here's what will happen if it goes wrong" scene.

 

I would probably rank the Craig Bonds and other recent major spy/assassin movies roughly like this:

MGM, Broccoli's and Amazon are doing a Bond themed game show. 007’s Road to a Million. In the works long before Amazon were eyeing up MGM for purchase. Supposedly a test of intelligence and endurance, filmed in Bond locations across the world. Big budget Krypton Factor? Teams of 2 competing for prizes of up to £1m.
