Oh mah god, have I got some gameplay footage for y'all!

Seriously, every moment in this game is EPIC. From being escorted by 3 fighter jets while you and 11 others are transported via Galaxy to the next capture node. To running up a hill with dozens of others and seeing tracer round light up the sky, jets flying over and shit exploding around you. It. Is. Amazing.

I can't wait for the full game. I'd gladly pay money for this so I hope there's some sort of premium package one can buy to get a few extra thingies. Love it!

Hmm, I just found out that the main tanks in this are now gunned by the driver - I'm not sure how I feel about that (at least the Prowler is anyway). I loved having 3 people in the tank, both guns firing independently, driver just concentrating on where he was going and positioning target for the gunners. It'd be a shame if that was gone and we ended up with hundreds of people soloing in the big tanks. It'd also make the Lighting tank completely redundant.

On another note, I hope they've kept in the Ant refuelling vehicles and the whole powering bases mechanic. I absolutely loved the tension of getting and ant over to a warp gate and back again to refuel a base in the dying seconds before a brownout occurs in PS1.

Found this guide on a PS2 forum, may find it useful.

edit - do PSN or XBL allow for free to play MMOs that are (I believe?) free to download? I seem to recall there was something about Xbox Live that stymied MMOs, although I haven't a source.

I think current consoles could do a better job than my laptop in terms of graphical stuff, but I think you're going to be screwed with regards textures and lack of memory.

edit - ah hah! So there's a shield generator to erect the shield around the spawn point, and then a spawn point generator letting the side who currently owns the facility spawn. Knock both out and you're stuffed. That's a proper lightbulb moment.

Oh that's good. I don't know how the game itself would be practical with such low system memory, though. I guess more technical folk will be able to tell us whether streaming off the disc is practical (or an install to HDD), but given the PC version is on the hdd and requires 4gig of ram, I don't know.

Also, this guide is superb. Everyone interested in playing read it immediately! We should pin it in the first post, or something. The stuff about influence makes perfect sense now, and I can see all sorts of tactics coming into play.

Is that free to play?

It will be, but I'm not sure when it's actually out; my guess would be within the next couple of months.

From the sounds of things Dust 514 has quite a few similarities to PS2, not least the rather opaque nature of its systems. The latter's definitely a lot prettier, though; my PC only scrapes over the minimum requirements, so I'll probably have to give it a miss.

Actually, will this be completely free, or will it be a one off purchase? I don't mind the latter if it better secures the game long term.

Nah, it's going to be freemium supported by microtransactions, like Tribes Ascend - but they haven't clarified exactly how it'll work.

If you're the kind of person who complains that the console industry is dominated these days by identikit FPS, you may need to start getting comfortable with freemium (or become a retro gamer). Most of the games I'm looking forward to are freemium now, and it seems as though anything slightly obscure or particularly innovative is going to go down that route. It makes sense, really.

Ha, great video! I loved the bugging out floating max right at the start!

Gentlemen, I reclon we should organise a bit of a planetside get together for tomorrow evening. I should be online from 8 for a few hours.

Now I notice pk is with the republic, but asura and I are NC.. hmmm. I've only got one character on EU1 atm.

New chars for coop lols? We could go Vanu or something.

I've got a Vanu character on EU 2 and a Republic & an NC character on EU 1, but none of them are actually levelled up in the slightest so I don't mind starting again with whatever faction, would be great to play some coop :)

Although Stu, are EU servers unplayably laggy for you?

My character is only BR2, but I've put points into infiltrator that I now regret and can't figure out how to respec! Might stick with light infantry for now, and get a light aircraft licence :)

And more importantly for Supper Stu, can you play mid afternoon? :)

Sounds good, I'll have to admire PS2 from afar then.

Sadly not :( So I shall require awesome videos like the last 2 posted.

Was reading that guide last night and thought I need to turn my hand to medic. I was getting pretty good at it in TF2, and it'd negate some of the latency issues I'd have playing on EU servers. Was a little disappointed I'd not be able to keep a MAX up constantly (needs engineer) but I figure heavy assault guys would be appreciative.
