The highest we spent on anyone this summer was Chamberlain for £12 mill. With the Nasri and Cesc sales we brought in more than we spent. Hardly extravagant and in the context of those around us, both above and below, we haven't done much.

So I was wondering how true this was. Looking at team spend over the last six completed seasons ie 05/06 -10/11. This comprises wages and net transfer spend then compared with average Premiership finish over the same period and worked out how many teams they finished above, on average, per season. Dividing PA spend by the teams they finished above gives you an idea of how much it has cost each team in millions per place in the Premiership table on average for the last six years. The table is limited to the 'Top 6', mainly because I can't be arsed doing the rest and I could only easily find wage data for these sides.

Look at fucking Billy Beane in here, doing his numbers thing.

Top post that.

Newcastle are like those dark horses we get most years. They have an incredible start to the season, get neutrals behind them, push for a Champions League spot and then fall badly at the final hurdle into midtable. Except we're at the final hurdle and they're getting stronger. If it carries on like this, St James Park will be renamed The Sports Direct Mike Ashley Stadium.

Guys, nevermind all that bollocks. What would you lot do if I told you the late afternoon game is Aston Villa vs Stoke City, because guess what, it is.

Think about that for a minute....

Aston Villa v Stoke City

Can you imagine what that's going to be like? If you are trying to imagine, stop, because you don't need to imagine any longer. It's actually gonna happen.

I'd say of all the "established" Premier League teams run on relative pittance, that would go to David Moyes' Everton. Now that's a team more than the sum of their parts!

Also hats off to Norwich where only goal difference seperates them from Liverpool ^_^

It looks as if Spurs want the title of 'the new Spurs' back from Liverpool. Well we are not giving it up without a fight, watch us get crushed by mighty Blackburn!

Hmm we did hit the crossbar but apparently we played well and couldn't finish.... hmmm nah we aren't as bad as Liverpool (yet)

That's not something to be proud of.

Not on Liverpools current form but in the grand scale of things it is. If someone had said at the season that with 5/6 games to go new boys Norwich would be level on points with Liverpool they'd have been to "fuck off, never gonna happen"

So yeah it's should be seen as a positive.

Isn't Balotelli just the biggest cunt? His career can surely only go downhill from here.

He's no Cantona.

Spurs! Hahahahahahahahaha

They're mid-table doing well, but they're level on Liverpool because Liverpool have slid to being a mid-table club. It happened, but not because Norwich are playing like Newcastle.

A few things are clear, there is a substantial difference between clubs in terms of expenditure versus Premiership finish. Spurs have spent less than half that of City yet finished three places higher, on average. In terms of analysis the clear issue with this information is it assumes the Premiership is a linear scale, which it isn't. Arsenal fans would argue the additional half million they've spent per place has been worth them finishing roughly three positions above Spurs with Champions league football and all that entails. Similarly ManU fans would claim the additional million per place they've spent versus Arsenal has enabled them to win the title four times in this period.

Regardless, Arsenal would appear to be well ahead in terms of Premiership finish based on expenditure.

If you are going to look at it like that and consider it a reflection of the past 6 seasons, a better way to do it would have been to look at the value of the squad at the start of that period and add that to the wages/transfers, then divide that by the number of years. You're looking at it in terms of the spend over those years contributing to the positions, which they have, but it doesnt consider that (as an example) Arsenal had a much better team than most of the others at the start, which would have affected both how much they needed to spend and how well they did earlier on in those years.

I take your point, not all the squads were of the same value but trying to determine how much squads were worth at a particular moment in time is tough. How much, for example, was Henry or Ronaldo worth 7-8 years ago? That aside I'm not convinced it would have that big an impact on figures - In this specific instance it would only have made a real difference for City.

As good a run as it was, there wasn't a single player closing him down.

Three tried to get to him. They were too slow/he was too good.

It's an awesome goal.

Andy Townsend saying today in the mail that Fourth officials are "stealing a living" when they don't get involved/miss things like the Balotelli tackle.

That's far worse than stealing an international place from someone who's actually Irish, isn't it Townsend?
