Marseille were long gone in the hunt for anything after five straight defeats before Quevilly. Lyon and Rennes are both above them in the league, and both arguably fighting for a CL place with only four and six points separating them from third place Lille.

Not that I expect either of them to do it, but it'd be interesting if so!

Oh, I guess I forgot that Marseille were still in the CL. :D

Goooooooooooooooooooooooal....LAZIO!

LOL, the eternal playground misconception.

I didn't think James Richardson ever had that much hair! I used to much prefer watching Football Italia to the Premiership back then, at the time I put it down to the chess-like nature and vastly superior technicality of the Italian game but I reckon the Channel 4 coverage probably had a lot to do with it too.

Forza viola!

The theme music was and is brilliant. The kind of generic 90s album rave that was on bloody everything. The show as a whole was streets ahead of everything at the time and makes the coverage we have to put up with now seem ludicrously amateur and reactionary. It's nice just to listen to someone who knows their stuff calmly go through a balanced piece about good old football.

The Baggio feature was fun to listen to as well. Interesting to see how quickly Jimbo dismissed his chances of signing for Milan (he did, Milan won the league) and said Juventus had more chance of keeping him even though they clearly wanted to sell because Baggio was pricing himself out of the club and some kid called Alessandro Del Piero who was coming through the youth team looked quite handy...

Over in the man utd thread a while back people were namechecking some old football italia favourites , Signori, Chiesa etc so who were your faves??

Abel Balbo was the one that made me smile most, i had totally forgotten about that guy, what a great player :)

Cant remember the name of one striker, think it was Oliveira or something, played for Cagliari or someone like that?? Was a skillfull player who grabbed a few goals... anyone remember who i mean??

Ah yes, that was Basil D'Olivera. He was on the books at Darlington, Grays Athletic and Manchester United, but was sacked after spiking a teammate's sandwich with peanuts, causing him to go into anaphylactic shock and have a big poo. 'It's just not cricket!' the manager at the time said. And that's how he found his true calling. True story.

I loved Sampdoria's (and Genoa's) stadium with those crazy brick towers in the corner. The San Siro too with those giant round things holding up the roof.

Sad to visit a few years ago and see what a hole the San Siro really is.

OK mate it was just a harmless joke GOD.

Sorry Napoleon!

Ha! OK here's a probably-not-better one.

When Fabrice Muamba woke up, he was told that Torres had scored twice. He said, 'Fuck me, how long was I out for?'

Much better, there was another great Torres joke i heard this week but i forgot it - someone must have heard it so post away!

Andrea Silenzi. He had an admirable goal-scoring record before he came to Nottingham Forest, and then we ruined him. I also enjoyed Danny Dichio playing for Sampdoria and Lecce.

I remember admiring the goal scoring prowess of Pierluigi Casiraghi and was excited to see him come to the Premier League with Chelsea in '98. That was short-lived.

A nod for Alvaro Recoba too, who was well good.
