Football Thread 2011/2012

Just gonna leave this here.

This doesn't really make sense, the fans didn't get them into this mess, it's not like they started booing them when they were winning loads of games or something.

Couple of wins doesnt prove anything either way.

Well that quote is just one of many. The point is mainly to lol at Orion for a bit because he went on for ages about how shit Kean was when to most people it seemed like he was doing ok with such a crap squad, and also that he thought the booing and (possibly) the abuse was a-ok.

I actually said I completely disagreed with the personal abuse being aimed at Steve Kean at the time.

These are the first back to back wins of Steve Keans managerial career, that should tell you something right there. Can't be arsed argueing about Kean though as this is the first time I have felt vaugely positive about football for awhile.

I guess if I was a footballer and was asked to wear that t-shirt I wouldn't really have much choice, despite my belief that praying for him is going to achieve absolutely nothing. I suppose a football training ground isn't the most likely forum for a theological debate though.

It's interesting that, in a country where 40% of the population have 'no religion' that everyone is 'praying for Muamba'

I thought pretty much exactly that the first time I saw the Twitter hashtag trendy thing.

The thing is, I suppose, that there's no real alternative way of expressing support. There's no need for people to contribute financially to the (no doubt insured) Premiership footballer, his fiancee/family (and presumably whoever started the trend) do seem to be religous (so there's a least a vocal minority it's perfect for), and #ThinkPositiveThoughtsForMuamba isn't catchy/short enough for Twitter (even though that's all many would say anyone not on the medical staff is doing).

#PrayForMuamba was really just a viable and/or reasonable option that got popular fast, as well as something that allows those with faith to feel they're making a genuine contribution when they'd be otherwise unable to. If that's at the expense of some atheists/agnostics (and I am one) being entirely comfortable with it then I think that's a fair trade-off.

Personally, I don't think it's a specifically faith-based thing so much as it's something that everyone, religous or otherwise, seems to have been happy to go along with to show support. If #GetWellSoonFabrice had trended first and/or been much catchier we probably wouldn't be having this conversation at all...

(Incidentally, I don't want to start a row, so if I've somehow unintentionally managed to be condescending, patronising or offensive (to anyone religous or otherwise) then, well, sorry about that.)

Abuse? It's a genuinely witty, funny chant that isn't abusive in any way.

You Suarez guys are hilarious. Whatever happened to that Scouse sense of humour?

You're saying all scouses have a sense of humour? You racist.

I adore the Stoke fans, I've been to several Chelsea matches against them and I don't think they've failed to give me at least one good belly laugh per match.

"John Terry...... Are you my dad?" out of nowhere is still the best thing I've ever heard at a match.

Chanting about someone being a racist isn't abusive?

Not when they're a racist no. Any more than it would be abusive to taunt John Terry about his inability to take important penalties.

It's interesting that, in a country where 40% of the population have 'no religion' that everyone is 'praying for Muamba'

This is probably not the right thread for this but it's just something that I've noticed.

However his family are religious, it's just polite. If that's what they feel will help then going up to them and saying "Haha I don't believe in your flying potato" is hardly constructive.

My favourite Stoke chant I've come across is "Tuncay-cay, Huth Huth, Abdoulae Faye" to the song Too Shy Shy.

Anything Quevilly can do, Gazélec Ajaccio can do better. After the former's 3-2 win in extra time against out of form Marseille, the latter have just dumped second place Montpellier out of the Coupe de France in normal time. Not only that, they've only just come up from the CFA last season.

It's a good week to be a Championnat National side.

Full strength Montpellier side as well. No that surprising though as Corsica is a hard place to go to. PSG vs Lyon later, last time they played it ended up 4-4, thus using up the entire quota of French goals for the entire week.

I think Chelsea have a decent chance of getting at least a point. They are still in their honeymoon period with Di Matteo, and this is a good time to play City.

Hmm. I find it very odd that the cardiologist was prepared to be so frank in that interview. Everyone else has been so tight-lipped, managing expectations, and certainly not going into detail about Muamba's progress. Fascinating stuff, it certainly sounds like he's doing as well as could be expected.

It's just a function of it being the most recent interview, and the first with any of the doctors. Nothing particularly odd about it.

Wheels falling off at Spurs then. Mind you, it is refreshing to see a spectacular end of season collapse from a team other than Aston Villa. (not that we have had anywhere to collapse from this season of course)

*edit*

Robbie Savage saying Manchester City's penalty shouldnt have been given because the shot was going over the bar. I only have the radio to listen to, but WTF?

I'm not religious but I use terms like pray and miracle or miraculous.

I guess their meanings are evolving.

It was harsh. Caught of the full volley and it struck him on his arms, and his arms were raised. But they were raised because he was jumping and he was about one yard away so very hard to do intentionally.
