Football Thread 2011/2012

I think both Sturridge and Welbeck are too inexperienced to really have a good stab at it together. I can see them just getting in each other's way. We'd be better off playing just one on his own and try to get some goals from midfield, but neither scenario is exactly ideal. It some something for the paucity of our options when an injury to Darren Bent is a serious setback to your chances. I mean, what happened in the last 10 years? It wasn't that long ago when we had to pick two from Shearer, Wright, Fowler, Le Tissier, Ferdinand, Sheringham, Cole, Owen, Sutton, Heskey, Phillips and probably a few more I've forgotten.

I look back at Leeds great spending splurge and there were some great players and games, but we won bugger all. Semis of the CL? What's that now? A league cup would have been better. Your name goes on that trophy forever.

Football is broken when people dismiss winning things for finishing miles off in the league.

Indeed, I feel a bit sorry for those in here dismissing it. Leicester's two wins were the best thing that will probably happen to the club during my lifetime, and being lucky enough to be there for one of them is something I will always remember. I think it says a lot for the sense of entitlement of the modern fan, and also the fact that many "fans" are so divorced from actually attending matches of the clubs they "support" that they look down on something like a League Cup win.

At least they get to play Barca.

I just wanna shake you and slap you til you realise what a load of shite you come out with every single fucking day!

Come at me bra.

I was simply trolled by a ManChoo fan, and I bit back. They're so cunning.

League 2 tonight.

Dagenham & Redbridge, Hereford and Plymouth all at the bottom and all playing away from home. Hereford were 2-4 up at Gillingham but they ended up losing 5-4 letting in 3 in the last 9 minutes. Dagenham & Redbridge won 1-2 at Morecombe. Plymouth were winning 1-0 up to the 96th minute.... the 96th minute! To make it worse, their goalscorer was released by us last season as he wasn't good enough

Heartbreaking :(

I wish my team had just won the League Cup as we might not even be in it next year.

Bloody hell. Anyone seen that Gillingham-Hereford scoreline. First, Hereford go 2-0 up in the opening 10 minutes. Gillingham get it back to 2-2 before Hereford again go 2 goals ahead with 10 minutes left. And now the game just finished 5-4 to Gillingham. Mental.

I mentioned it in the post just above you. The post I'd just written a whole two minutes prior to yours... in answer to your question, yes, yes I did see it.

My mate just sent me a text from the Macclesfield vs Plymouth game. Their goal was the 96th minute and he's having to travel back tonight - 260ish miles to get home :(

Yeah, I was writing mine the same time you posted it. Pretty great result for us (Gillingham). We got done by Wimbledon in similar fashion earlier in the season.

Apologies if I was rude but I'm in a bit of a bad mood.

I was born in Gillingham and support Plymouth - I should hate football in all honesty.

Am I missing something? Plymouth, sadly, are out of the relegation spots?

We should be well out of it by now but we keep drawing games and we're still down there. There's quite a lot of Exeter (given your forums) that really want Argyle to be out of the league but I'm not sure why. A lot of our proper fans donated money to Exeter City when they were in dire straits (me included) and we put a lot of cash into the Adam Stansfield charity too. Devon football will be truly in a sad state if the best club in Devon is Exeter (and that's not meant to be rude).

Hereford missed a penalty in the last minute - it should have been 5-5.

You're right mate, a lot of Football fans such as Tottenham look at the 'big picture' like trying to qualify for the Champions League next season and dismiss the League cup or the Europa league but qualifying for the Champions league might not(and probably wont) lead to anything anyway, they would be better off looking at the 'little picture' and win a trophy that they remember in 10 years

Portsmouth are similar to Leeds but they managed to win the FA Cup, I cant speak for Portsmouth fans but I doubt hey would swap the memories for being steady in the Premier League, or maybe they would, I dunno?

Portsmouth fans might settle for not being bankrupt all the time. Leeds have actually won the league not THAT long ago though, it's not all doom 'n gloom! Admittedly it was immediately before Sky invented football.

Not sure why he gets a yellow though.

I think they banned doing the fake kick thingy, so that probably explains it. Hilarious attempt!

I am thankful I've seen my team win the league in my lifetime, all be it pretty young. Most supporters won't ever see it. We might, given the right circumstances, recover sufficiently to play lower european competition, but we'll never win the league. Neither will Villa or Everton or Forest or a host of other great clubs.I know that's sweeping but it's true unless football is broken and remade. The future is Scotland. Or indeed, Spain.

I think Portsmouth fans might swap that doped FA Cup for their club actually existing, though.

Yep. I think we spent £90 million in about 3 or 4 years to achieve an FA Cup win. Absolutely crazy. If we freefall to League 2 then so be it. We need a reality check and proper owners in place.
