What does that have to do with the vast majority of clubs, though?

It was just an example of why people think the top teams think it pointless. Like I said, if they made the Cups about getting into Europe rather than league positions, the clubs might take them more serious.

But just getting into Europe is such a fucking depressing ambition. Like, what, just get tonked in the group stages every so often until you're good enough not to be fodder?

I'm not saying every club should eye top 4 cos they reckon they've got a chance to beat Barca to the cup but it's like Wenger who doesn't seem to be arsed about actually winning the European Cup, just to be in it every season as if that's the point.

As far as I'm concerned if you're in a competition, you should try to win it.

I twice went to Cardiff to see Southend lose in the LDV Vans trophy and it was absolutely miserable and I'd have loved it if they'd won (although a month after losing one of them Southend won the playoff final there so it made up for it I think).

I also saw Southend beat Man Utd a few years later and that was brilliant, and made up for getting relegated at the end of that season, I reckon, mainly because I've seen Southend get relegated loads of times and I'd never seen them beat United before. Or indeed anyone even vaguely decent, really.

So in answer to your question I don't know, mainly because you don't get a choice, and most seasons are just unrelenting misery and I'll take any vague pleasures I can get I'm not fussy.

I certainly remember the Man U result if only cos I got to see Steve Tilson on tele talking about beating Man U which was surreal. My brother went to one of those LDV cup finals and was gutted. You go for a big day out like that, losing is gonna hurt and you'll remember it. When it comes to results fans of other clubs might remember, beating Man U is a pretty big one though.

Um yeah, basically I don't know either. Fun to talk about the Shrimpers though!

It's my passport photo.

Im glad you have resorted to personal insults, only one person looking a twat - if you even read what i posted you may even agree, i said it was the mickey mouse cup but i was pleased when we won it. Do i care when we go out, no as its the mickey mouse cup - still nice to win it on occasion tho!

'nice to win it on occasion tho' You should be delighted to win anything if you're a Tottenham fan, you would think reading that you're team are winning the treble every year, not the league cup every 10 years or whatever it is

http://www.guardian....r-cash-trophies seems appropriate reading at the moment. To the players, it's nice but it ain't necessarily all that.

Seems wrong that to pretty much any fan the trophies are important but for the clubs and those playing for them it's not that big a thing.

Our Carling cup final win last year was the best day of my life, being at Wembley to watch the boys beat Arsenal in the last minute. It doesn't get any better than that. :)

Fuck anybody who calls it a Mickey Mouse trophy.

This is patently complete bollocks. What possible reason could you have for suggesting this? I don't even know where to begin.

The Football Association will draw up a shortlist of candidates for the vacant England job at the end of this week in case it proves impossible to lure Harry Redknapp away from Spurs, ESPNsoccernet can reveal.

Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, Roy Hodgson, Martin O'Neill and caretaker boss Stuart Pearce, as well as Gareth Southgate, will be discussed as possible contenders.

The Carling cup is the mickey mouse cup but i was pleased when Spurs won it in 2008, mainly as we beat Chelsea in a period when we just didnt ever beat them!

Its kind of like the out of form premier league teams cup of choice and you only have to see how few multiple winners there are to see that its not a cup that big teams always get behind.

Having said that its the cup that Norwich have won as often as Arsenal so always holds a special place in my heart ;)

Arsenal have won the European cup as often as Norwich, it must be a mickey mouse cup then :coffee:

A successful season for United, Chelsea, Arsenal and now City is not defined by a League Cup win while they're sitting seventh in the league. It's a consolation prize. And to be fair to the League Cup, it's been and continues to be a great consolation prize, as we are currently seeing from Liverpool fans.

I prefer watching the kids play in it than watching FA Cup ties and it's a great day out at Wembley - as are Blue Square Bet Conference Premier play-off finals.

The end to a Man Utd season is often getting smashed by Barca isn't it? Success!

So is the FA Cup Final, ya moron. No Liverpool fan is pretending the League Cup is as good as winning the FA Cup but it's a decent thing nonetheless. If only everyone could post about its lack of value before we won it, eh?

It's pretty pathetic ripping a team for winning a trophy.

No Liverpool fan thinks that it's anything more than it is. Trust me, we know what it's like to win the biggest trophy in European football recently (unlike the majority of fans in this topic).

Could there be anything more childish than going "whatever, we didn't want to win it anyway :P" after we win it?

Actually, if you type "Mickey Mouse" into the search bar for this topic, it's quite annoying for me.

But at least you can't deny I referred to the League Cup as a Mickey Mouse cup before this week!

That just makes you wrong last week as well.

As a Liverpool fan i'm used to others knocking the club's achievements, it was the same in the treble year and after Istanbul, i just ignore it. All football fans are hypocrites and i'm sure if United, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea etc had just won the league cup their fans wouldn't be so critical of it,. The club has a great shot at the FA cup this year and if they can pull it off then it would have been an amazing season with or without champions league qualification. I'd take a domestic double over 4th spot no question about it.

What annoys me about the League Cup and UEFA Cup bashing is these competitions have got a bad rep as they now get in the way of 4 or 5 teams playing in or qualifying for the Champions League or as a distraction for teams trying to stay in the Premier League - which equates to winning stuff isn't worth it if it effects our ability to make lots of money (Champions League)/ensure we don't lose lots of money (Relegation).

Its messed up that Liverpool's win is being looked down on and that Man U finishing 2nd and Chelsea or Arsenal getting 4th spot will be seen as a better season for those clubs than Liverpool as they qualified for the Champions League while Liverpool just won a crappy cup.

And as we have seen this season - Champions League hasn't been much fun for all 4 clubs (unless Chelsea turn it around).
