He only played one game at the 62 World Cup too, before getting injured. His winner's medal was only awarded retrospectively. Obviously, he was good enough to get into the squad, but they didn't need him in order to win the tournament. (Slightly petty point to make I guess.)

Does anyone enjoy hearing from the old legends of the game? It's great that they're not forgotten, but when they speak out, whether it's Platini, Beckenbauer, Charlton, Hurst, Pele, whoever, I nearly always find it to be pish and drivel.

You could say the same about other sports too, Jackie Stewart for example seems to fail to recognise theres been plenty of great drivers racing since he retired.

Obviously modern day football means Messi won't get anywhere near Pele's total, but if carries on scoring the way he has, then I think it would be an almost equal feat. Agree with the national team argument though. The things Maradona and Pele did in World Cups probably won't ever be repeated again.

Pele counts every goal he has ever scored though. Not just the ones in first team football which actually count, but he includes every goal he has scored in a friendly match, in training, at school when he was a kid and probably what he scored in FIFA on the Playstation to his tally.

I've said before, but they should have two sets of records for football achievements - one that is 'the highest goal scorer ever' for instance, and the other, probably more relevant one would be 'the highest scorer in modern day football' which would only count the last say 20/30 years or something. If it shut Pele up for five minutes it would be worth it anyway. Also, Puskas should be mentioned in the same breath as Pele more often. That guy was a machine and still playing when he looked like this:

An absolute don.

Neil Warnock's always been a straight talker as well as a fucking great manager and I'd take his word over Barton's every day of the week, Nietzsche namechecks or not.

If Lee Clark fails to get us up again this year I'd have him

(deffoes NSFW) in a heartbeat if he'd come.

That's a good team talk and imma let you finish but this is by far the craziest shit I have ever seen.

NSFW language.

Haha, "You can bring your fucking dinner" vs. "You're in fucking Latvia". Both decent shouts.

I remember watching that one at the time, I think it was also the source of the 'Bertie Big Bollocks' phrase that's become a stock one amongst my mates in the years since.

Is it me or does every non-Sky Sports liveonlinefooty stream have the same commentator and Scottish co-commentator? As if they've cloned the same two men to commentate on every match.

Also the last match I went to I heard the half time and full time music they have on those channels in my head.

Anyone watching the Everton-Blackburn game? It's been pretty harsh on Blackburn, they've hit the post, had an offside goal ruled out (correctly) and fallen behind to a goal which had a blatant hand-ball in the build-up, they've also been the better side I reckon. Good game and that.

Neil Warnock said if our fortunes improve it'll be down to new players rather than a new manager. He wasn't wrong. Akos Buzsaky, the ridiculously talented playmaker he left on the bench for Shaun Derry all this season and last, has scored a curling free kick and is playing an absolute blinder.

Edit: that one from Rodallega was quite good too...

If I were a Villa fan I'd still want him to take over at the end of the season, if not sooner. Wigan are playing some really good stuff here, they just don't have the defenders to play it out from the back the way he likes, nor the strikers to finish off their all their good play... The contrast with Villa under Mcleish could not be more blatant.

Jesus. I've been keeping an eye on the Gillingham-Wimbledon score, and we (Gillingham) were 3-1 up on 62 minutes, and Wimbledon have just taken a 4-3 lead on 89 minutes. Must have been a mental game.

In related mental scoreline news, the team one town over from where I live, Hinckley United were 0-4 down at home to Stalybridge today, they came back to go 5-4 up before conceding a late equaliser and drew 5-5. Michael Duberry (remember him?) bagged a hat trick too. Two own goals before scoring a last minute equaliser for Oxford against Hereford.

Andy Carroll is continuing his form I see.

For all the stick that Torres has received, there are still glimpses there. With Carroll there is nothing apparent that he's giving the team.

How on earth did he ever get selected for England?

Andy Carroll is continuing his form I see.

What service has he had? Has he even received one decent ball to attack near the goal? And it's like this in near enough every match. I'm not making excuses for him, I just find the level of service he gets to be embarrassing.

He gets terrible service. But he also has a terrible first touch, falls over a lot and tends to shank what service he does get wide. How much of that is confidence that could be fixed by better service is a matter of debate, but SaintM is right that even Torres is cabale of having a decent game and at least reminding us of the player he used to. To be honest part of me wouldn't be surprised to see Carroll sold at the end of the season, and for him to find his natural level at a mid-table or even Championship club.

Edit: watching ESPN, the free ride Dalgliesh gets compared to Benitez is absolutely ridiculous. He's spent an absolute fortune basically to cement their Europa League status and the worst criticism he comes in for is "Rome wasn't built in a day".
