They've got themselves to blame for the first goal though. The cross wasn't closed down at all. Was it Kolarov at left back? He strolled towards the wing and didn't really bother getting tight to his man.

I can see a potential spanking for City today if they get things wrong.

I'd be pissed off at the player. Absolutely no need for that type of challenge in that area of the pitch this early in the game. I don't really know how anyone can defend it, could have easily caused a big injury with that challenge.

Townsend made a great point that sometimes your studs do show and his feet were barely off the ground. It wasn't even a yellow. Fuck me if that was a red soon football will have about as much contact as netball. If his feedthad been at shin level it would have been completely different and id agree on a red. They barley even registered with Nani, it was Rooney who complained.

Not even a yellow? You did see him go into the tackle with both feet, right?

Two footed tackle, deemed reckless by the ref, which is a clear red.

If, as quoted on the commentary, that excessive force is a red and reckless is a yellow - then its a yellow as you've proven.

Giggs had a tackle earlier where he had both feet off the ground. A foul yet not even a yellow. Consistency.

I always thought a red card for a two footed challenge was for something like this

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/02/16/article-1357703-0D378E0B000005DC-427_634x320.jpg

From watching the replays of that tackle it looked to me like he won the ball with his right foot and then his momentum caused his left leg to come around and nick Nani's standing leg. It wasn't an instant red card, play had continued for a few seconds before the red card came out during which time Rooney was the only player appealing for a decision. If it was such a definite red the referee would have at least blown for a free kick straight away.

Reckless =/ Red card

Laws of the game:

Reckless means that a player has acted with complete disregard to the danger to or consequences for his opponent. A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned.

Perhaps blame the player for his act of stupidity rather than the ref who was put in the position where he could easily send him off? It was totally needless and potentially dangerous. He should really know better.

This is how I would look at it. Two-footed tackles are clumsy at best and you could argue its poor technique. Why give the ref any reason/excuse to send you off for a tackle near the middle of the field where the danger to goal was limited at the time. We seem to get too pre-occupied with blaming refs decisions instead of players poor decision making. And hes the captain! :quote:

The other thing which is mildly annoying was Townsend insinuating that he shouldn't be sent off purely because its early in a high profile game. A sending off is a sending off in the 1st minute, the 30th or the 92nd...

I reckon theres a chance they'll even do their FA cup special - get everyone watching and anticipating what should be a great cup tie and then go 2-0 up early with Man City getting someone sent off and its game over.

Almost...

There we go.

Weak. Toure would have lumped that away. Spanking on the cards.

Mancini must be furious. You can buy the players but you can't buy the ref Roberto, you're not in Italy anymore.

Not sure how jones didn't get a booking for his kick out at at the city player by the touch line

It seemed like a "reckless" act to me. According to this thread INSTANT RED :coffee:

And Wellbeck gets booked for that?
