Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (now Re-Reckoning)

Reckon it's about time this baby had a thread of its own although we won't be seeing it until 2012, deep into that year I suspect given the obvious overlapping of interest with Skyrim. It's being developed by a new studio, 38 Studios, employing the talents of RA Salvatore (Drizzt!), Todd McFarlane and Ken Rolston (Elder Scrolls), and it seems to be an ambitious undertaking but of course competing with some tough opposition. Have no idea at this point in time how deep the lore will be or how extensive / rewarding the open world exploration. Publisher is EA.

Gameplay wise it seems to be described as an "Action RPG" but hopfully will have genuine RPG elements.

Some hands-on impressions are leaking out from E3 so here are some links to get us started:

This may turn out to be the best game of all time and have Morrius burning his copy of Half Life 2 in the street. But goddamn is that ever a terrible title, it sounds like something you'd get on one of those 'comedy' RPG name generators on the web.

That video looks pretty good. The combat seems decent (I always play these things as a melee fighter) and it's very pretty to look at. I've been getting back into my Western RPG's this year so will keep an eye out on this.

I saw the E3 trailer and while it looks nice enough; it looked rather derivitive to me. Mcfarlane looks to have been used to...make elves like they've got in the LOTR movies? And if they've not elves they look like em.

Maybe it's early footage yet also looked quite clean to me; lacking some of the effects that The Witcher 2 throws around.

It might be nice to have something set in olden times to compare to the Saints Row series perhaps. Not another "man avenged killer"...

I think it looks very interesting tbh! I'm always looking out for decent open-world rpgs, and Reckoning reminds me of Two Worlds 1 with more polish and a bigger budget. That is a good thing to me btw. As great as Skyrim will undoubtedly be, I'm always up for a open world rpg that is less streamlined and simplified than Bethesda's current output.

Don't want to judge this by that dodgy trailer, but when the commentator begins with 'you've been resurrected by the device knowns as the Well of Souls', a small part of me died...

And then the voice of the gnome kicked in.

Roll a class that doesn't engage in combat?

But I love combat. :(

I just wish it wasn't so damn wooden. That and the whole feel and style of it just don't work for me. But there's lots of stuff to play anyway and I'm sure Skyward Sword will keep me occupied for quite some time.

I was just going to see if there was a thread for this game.

Having played quite a bit of it recently, I think it's criminal that hardly anyone's paying attention to it (the terrible title probably has a lot to do with that). It's the combat that makes it so good. Previews comparing it to Fable must have been written by people who didn't even attempt to investigate the combat mechanics. It's much closer to God of War/DMC. This is evident even from the beginning of the game as you realise you can cancel your attacks instantly into guard or evade at any point. Expect combo vids for this shit.

I imagine it is the name is holding it back, the whole thing just sounds so cheesy. Even though I've only heard positive things from it I'm still having trouble taking it seriously. Not only that, but the guy that gave the demonstration at E3 was quite... interesting. He was a little off putting and certainly didn't make me take the game more seriously.

Before I get lost in a northern adventure, 360 users should check out the two videos which show some of the factions in the game and explain the skills development a bit too. Good stuff, but just a bit hard to focus on just now.

I make that countdown 91 days, 2,184 hours..............

I'll get me coat.

shit name but sounds very interesting, it would certainly have gotten more attention if it wasn't due for release so soon after Skyrim

Yeah I reckon they will keep a low profile now until early January (bar the weekly developer Q&A every Wednesday on the forum) and then if they are confident in their product they should get review copies out nice and early and not impose restrictions on publishing reviews to try to maximise interest at a very crowded time for releases (FF XIII-2) ships a week earlier, and ME3 is a few weeks later).

Naturally everyone's playing Bethesda's game at the moment, but come Februrary I could well be in the market for a different kind of RPG. Here's 20 minutes of commented footage:

It clearly doesn't share Skyrim's classy aesthetic — both in terms of art and UI — but in many ways it looks like the game I would have expected Fable to become. A bit gaudy for my tastes, perhaps, but it certainly looks fun and we aren't exactly inundated with this style of game.

Few more videos doing the rounds:

There's also an index on the official with a lot of information from posts by Curt Schilling and the developers:

Really like the look of this, combat looks like a lot of fun.

First impressions are actually very good. Don't get me wrong, it's completely unoriginal, and the menus are dreadful, but it's great fun to play, and that's vitally important in a real-time combat RPG. Looks nice too. Reminds me of Torchlight for some reason.

I'll post more after dinner. I'm still in the first dungeon, but i'm not wanting the demo to end. lol! ;)

*Edit* Oooh! Just got outside. Very colourful indeed.

If you stay in there, it won't. Won't be much to actually do after a while, but...

Very generous demo, actually.
