Guardian Heroes - HD Remake

This is an old game, chap - Game Over is just that! Story Mode is simply the main mode of the game: play through, make decisions, level up, and get to an ending or die trying. Then do it all over again! Each time your decisions and actions can lead you down a different story path; each path leads unlocks different characters for the Versus mode. And, depending on the character you're playing, can lead to different, er, options opening up to you through the course of the game. That's about it!

Oh okay cheers! For some reason I had it in my head I could just grind levels until every character was a mighty god amongst sprites.

With serina you can juggle enemies in the first room for a good while after they die, boring but you can get a hefty few levels doing that.

Oh man. Oh man. It's just as glorious as I remember. It's utterly, utterly superb. I watched the Saturn intro and got goosebumps. I also, for no discernible reason at all, got a bit teary. Dear God help me

Lol you pussy.

I did too actually. It transported me to that time, one glorious summer after I'd bought the game in Hamleys, where I had not a care in the world. For a moment it was hard to unite those two people, the past me and the current me. The good nostalgia, the powerful kind.

Oof.. <Emerges after 4 solid hours play>

:D

THAT'S how to update a classic..

Still plays brilliantly as ever.. it's just FUN.

Not even started on the remix mode properly yet.. just done a few playthroughs of the original mode :)

With different characters it's practically a different game

Pinging enemies off Nicole's giant barrier of doom (oo-er) never gets old

Not too bad even with the crummy 360 d-pad either :)

I've always like sideways-scrolling beat-em-ups, but never owned a Saturn so this is all new to me. Played the demo laughing hysterically and then bought the game.

Just one question: what do the stats all do? Which one refers to magic ability - luck?

Hmm I was enjoying this until the fucking Glutes just basically stun locked me through all of my continues twice in a row. How the hell do you combo break?

Assuming we're talking original mode, hammer Y like a bastard, generally (hammering buttons wakes you from stun, and Y causes an instant counter when struck [may only be from behind], knocking back the enemy).

Step 1 - press Start

Step 2 - go to the help menu

Step 3 - knowledge!

(More helpfully - intelligence affects your magic strength, mental your magic points and magic resistance. Agility speeds up attacks and spellcasting, and Luck effects, well, everything - randomly increases damage dealt and decreases damage taken, increases XP gain, and is particularly useful for Nicole's magic in certain ways. Of the mundane attributes, Strength increases damage dealt and knockback, Vitality is health)

Never played this before but tried coop with a mate and I swear I couldn't tell what the hell was going on the screen half the time  Seems really fun though and I'm going to get into it in more depth eventually but to be honest I kept thinking of Dark Souls so I turned it off eventually.

Jusdt failed a single credit on hard attempt by getting trapped in the corner by three banisher shields on the last stage. Without that screw up I could have done it and expect to nail it next time.

Some things to do to make it a bit easier:

- Opt out of fighting Kanon. Tell him he did what he had to do.

- Make sure Valgar is your final boss.

- If you're at the end of a fight and know a cut scene is about to start, spam your magic hard for free experience; it'll be replenished for the next fight.

- Make liberal use of the Undead Hero's berserk mode.

- Block and plane shift a lot.

- Don't underrate the agility stat, particularly if you're using Han. One of the most frustrating things about playing on hard is that you get hit out of the start up of all your moves, so if you can spare any points for agility then do it.

This game was/is the dogs bollocks of scrolling beat em ups. Used to play this to death before Smash Bros came out, and youd always have someone go the pikachu character just to be able to beat your ankles to death while you were too busy laughing your ass off to fight back or even care :D

Was totally mental and, sadly it being on the Saturn, didnt get the love it so deserved!

This was me earlier. Hugs.

Just came off a hour long mostly 12 player online multiplayer battlefest. Fucking mental - but so good.

I have to admit I completely overlooked this game on the Saturn back in the day. Being 16, 3d stuff like Sega Rally, Panzer Dragoon etc were taking up all my attention and I dismissed this due to the "blocky" 2d graphics. So shallow!

Anyway, this conversion is amazing and I actually prefer the old school Saturn graphics to the new mode. Definitely the Xbla game of the year... I just wish is was on PSN too so I could play online with my Saturn loving mates...

Sega have been playing a bit of a blinder with XBLA releases recently what with this, Renegade Ops and Daytona on the way.... it can't possibly last.. (but fingers crossed they think about porting that PS2 spruced up version of NiGHTS in the meantime!)

JLM - King of Science even outside of Street Fighter theads.

He was banned round ours, none of the other characters could hit the swine. By the time you hit him a few times he'd leveled up way beyond control.

I've been watching the intro on YouTube this week in preparation and it gets me everytime.

Same with Silhouette Mirage.

Man, Treasure were unstoppable back then. Absolutely unstoppable.

Actually, that's the only thing I don't l like about this version: the postage stamp sized square they've stuck the intro video in. I mean, I appreciate it'll look awful blown up on a modern screen, but I'd still rather have that option than having to strain my eyes on a tiny square instead :(
