Guardian Heroes - HD Remake

For whoever's picked it up already, what are the definite number limits on co-op and various other multiplayer stuff?

Yeah, I want to know this too. Someone earlier mentioned 8-player co-op - I really doubt that's the case, but I would really like 4-player co-op; it'd be awesome to go through the whole game as Randy, Han, Nicole AND Ginjirou.

It's 2 player co op for Story mode. 12 player versus (with up to 4 players playing on a single console)

Oh crap, I didn't think of 6 player being absent on the same console. Curses indeed. Hopefully this sees a PS3 release then, if only to give Treasure more of my money.

Aye, what Donut said about the multiplayer. I think my Saturn offering six players on one console is the only thing it has over this version so far. Oh, and being able to put it in my CD player and rock out to Valgar's theme.

Just blasted through Story mode with Original gameplay settings but also with the new graphical filters. It was lovely. The main enhanced thing I noticed is that loads of voices and other sound effects I'd never heard before were really prominent. I don't know how much of that has been added or if it's just that I'm on a better gaming set up these days but it was noticeable.

Oh, and certain bits of Engrish have been cleaned up. The muscular bandit dudes are now "Glutes" instead of "Godats", which is presumably what they were going for in the first place. Unfortunately I didn't go through the story route that unlocks Macho and Gambo yet though.

Other than that it was the usual routine. I always used to play as Randy or Serena, but last time I went through unlocking everyone on the Saturn version I switched to Nicole. She's obviously a lot more useful with a co-op partner and is meant to be played as such, but I just played through anyway and had fun doing the classic set ups like dragon punching a couple of enemies up against the screen and then trapping them with the shield for insane damage. Also her healing is still useful in single player both for your own benefit and the fact that plenty of the enemies are actually harmed by it. I also like that she gets the most tangible effects from pumping tonnes of EXP. into the Luck stat.

The only real downer with Nicole is that I usually like to turn the Undead Hero off for most of the game because he can get greedy and I want the experience for myself. Single player with Nicole is the only time where life can get pretty hard if you don't let him help from time to time.

Anyway, yes, stunning remake, and you can skip the cut scenes now. They've thought of everything.

Haha, they haven't.

I love that on the set up screen for battle mode that it warns of "unfair or stalemate matches". Those were the best matches! Level 70 Sky Spirit vs Level 3 Coughing Civilian is one of gaming's classic battles.

Hmm. I bought this but it's refusing to download. I put it down to being on TalkTalk or something, but is there any way I can download the data on a computer and then copy it across on a flash drive like a firmware update?

Don't think you can do this for DL stuff, only some demos and updates AFAIK..

Unless you know anyone else with a 360 as you could download & copy it onto a USB.

I think they were in the Japanese version. Certainly the intro on the Japanese version has Japanese voices for the cast; they were muted in the Western version.

Oh sorry I don't mean voice acting in the cut scenes; the characters aren't fully voiced in-game in any version, I just mean certain death sounds and other individual snippets of speech seem a lot clearer and easier to pick out than they were on the Saturn version, and a handful of them sounded entirely new to me.

Going into battle mode now it looks like quite a few of the enemies have been given new names as well. The Banisher is now The Royal Purger, and some of the aforementioned names that were a result of translation issues have been fixed.

Six new colours for every character is a bit exciting too.

Be nice if it had that anime opening at the start rather than squirrelled away in bonus.

Also amazing how sort of unwelcoming the game is compared to the modern experience we expect nowadays. But shit yeah if there ain't gold in them thar hills. That Next Level review was pretty good. A side scrolling beat em up with magic and the depth of a one on one fighter. You'll figure out soon enough which moves are the real powerful ones with whichever character you choose and learn to maximise their use.

Keeping track of your character amongst all the ruckus is crazier than ever! :)

It really is.

One of the default sets of rules for battle mode is having everything on random, which is how myself and my friends tend to play a lot of the time. With twelve characters it's absolutely nuts. Just set one up now having unlocked a batch of characters with my first run through and it generated:

Serena

Robot

Banisher

Coughing/Elderly Civilian

Gash (snigger)

Fat civilian

Skeleton

Nicole

Nicole again

Ginjirou

Randy

Cyclops

Of those, 8 are capable of filling the screen with varying degrees of magic and other flashiness, two are absolutely enormous and two are completely unable to block. The elderly civilian was Level 3 and was dead within three seconds of the fight starting, the Skeleton was dead about 5 seconds later and I couldn't even tell you how either of them died.

By the time I had my bearings and established where my character was and whether or not I had any teammates there were already two casualties.

I followed that with an anything goes Serena vs Serena vs Serena vs Serena vs Serena vs Serena vs. Serena vs Serena vs Serena vs Serena vs Serena vs Serena rumble, during which everyone was either frozen or on fire for the duration. Superb.

Yay, managed to trick my 360 into downloading this! It would download when I turned the machine off. So the first time it got up to 19%, then 33% the net time. Luckily third time was the charm and it did the whole thing. Can't wait to play this later!

Have they re-written the dialogue?

Seems different from what I remeber from the Euro Saturn version, but then again, it has been 14 years since I played this game.

Yeah, it's supposed to be a bit more accurate than the (acceptable) original..

<taps watch> Isn't it the end of the day yet?

Is it really low res?

How does story mode work? I was playing original version story mode, and gained a few levels. I then tried story mode again upon game over and all my progress was gone. I am confused!

The main thing is: it plays fucking amazingly though.
