Guardian Heroes - HD Remake

What are the chances of this opening the door for other Saturn games to drop on XBLA? I know both this and Radiant Silvergun are being handled by Treasure but could it encourage Sega to get their act together?

I think I've only played a Saturn for about three hours (a little bit of Nights and a little bit of Virtua Cop) and I always consider it the most obivious void in my gaming history.

Sega will never get their act together, because they are so ridiculously fucking incompetent and slack when it comes to their IP.

Exhibit fucking A

This is probably the yardstick to judge what we're likely to get even if they did decide to rerelease more classic stuff..

:doh:

I'm so incredibly excited about this. This is the Treasure game I've missed that I've always wanted most to play. Even more than Radiant Silvergun.

Just a question for all you seasoned pros, I'm pretty sure this game used Street Fighter like commands for special moves and such. Is this a game that's going to be good to play on an arcade stick, or is it worth investing in a saturn pad adapter or suchlike to get the proper experience? Maybe one of those MVC3 pads would be good for it...

I think the issue here is that the 360 pad is utterly shit, and imp only has an arcade stick as an alternative. A Saturn pad (or other controller with decent d-pad) would be ideal, but an arcade stick should do if you don't have access to any such devices. That's what I'm counting on, anyway; I don't fancy having to buy a new controller!

Only thing that I feel might be weird on a stick is the hopping between different depth levels, which if I recall correctly was on the Saturn shoulder buttons? Putting them on the 7th and 8th buttons of a TE stick might not be that convenient and since I've only got a basic hori 6 button one they'd have to be on the unusable buttons at the top of the joystick. I imagine it'd work pretty nicely for basic movement and special commands though.

I struggle to imagine playing it on anything other than a Saturn pad, but if I try my hardest to be unbiased I reckon it'd play quite nicely on a stick, and for the Live Arcade version I'll definitely be using my TE over the 360 pad.

Most commands are more like MK specials than SF specials, using four directions rather than rotations, so on the Saturn's lovely D-pad it all feels really clean and precise. Things like forward, back, down, forward Magic are common input for big lasers o'death, but on stick I'd probably try inputting it like a Super from an SNK game and hope that all of that was captured.

In terms of buttons, on the Saturn I use the default contols which is:

A = Block

B = Light Attack

C = Heavy Attack

X = Instruct Undead Hero

Y = Plane shift

Z = Magic

L = Plane shift back

R = Plane shift forward

You don't necessarily need the Y button because L and R do a better job (with Y if you start on the front plane and press it three times goes back a plane, back again and then skips to the front plane, whereas with L and R you can hop back and forth at will).

The magic button will need to be placed as an attack button because you use it at the end of all the magic commands. Maybe the same place you'd put your special/launcher button in Marvel? You also need to be able plane shift at a moment's notice, which is why I prefer Saturn shoulder buttons to having it on the face buttons, but I'm sure you could get the muscle memory down in time.

I'd probably go with this on the TE

Light-------------Heavy--------------Magic-------------Undead Hero

Block-------------Shift Back---------Shift Forward-----No function/Plane Shift

Shifting back and forth on the two far right buttons of the TE looks nice and neat, but you need them in the thick of it I reckon because they're as important as blocking when some of the more devastating magic is happening.

Just wanted to say that all magic have command moves (its not common knowledge) You can press the magic button and scroll though the magic menu and press it again to cast but its easier to do a command + press magic button.

Y is only worth it to change plans to avoid an attack. You always jump to another plain with Y but with L or R you may already be at the top / bottom.

True, Y is a great emergency bail button because it does eliminate the problem of pressing the wrong plane shift button in the heat of the moment, but I think it's worth getting used to choosing your hop to give yourself greater control.

Cheers for the advice guys! I'd always wanted a pad for 2D games anyway, this might just be the excuse I need. :)

Looking at those PDP Marvel Pads, they're going for silly prices now, A Madcatz pad should be a decent alternative at around £15. :)

I think they're £12 instore in HMV atm, thinking I might pick one up myself now. Also had Hori regular and pro sticks last time I was there too.

You star, I'll have a pop down to the shops next week.

Moosey, I dunno if they're discontinued or what, but there's one PDP pad on ebay going for £75 including shipping, and they're going for $79 + Shipping on amazon.com. Ouuuch.

I've mainly played the Japanese version of this to death, remember finding it in Cex soon after it came out thinking the cover looked cool and buying it, imagine how boring that talky bit in the middle was in Japanese!

Talking of covers the US version has some of the worst artwork ever always worth checking out for a laugh.

Haha, I did see that, thanks, and it's what made me think about it. I checked the site though and that looks a tad pricey and added to which some of the converter parts were out of stock. How feasable is it to get a Saturn pad that isn't completely knackered these days? I remember I had one back in the day and the bumpers both died before too long. :(

Both the SAT>PSX and PSX>360 came to £30 when I bought them about this time last year. Unsure about sourcing saturn pads, I picked mine up from Gamestation's retro stock.

YT mirror

:)

The filter looks better in motion than I expected having only seen the still shots before.

Nice to see a bit of revisionist history from the presenter though, apparently even back in 96 people thought Guardian Heroes looked a bit shitty? The graphics were amazing for the time! They still hold up today in my opinion. The Saturn was a 2D beast in its day and Guardian Heroes was a showcase for that.

Yes the graphics were ace, apart from the slowdown. Which I actually sort of liked, it made the hectic bits where Han has just burned 20 sprites (including your pissed off co-op partner) really dramatic.

Also i must say it was nice of the SEGA rep to stress that they've added the battle mode in for the XBLA release, it sounds great!

Treasure still sticking to the old school principle of exclusivity and maximising the target platform, even in this age, explains why it's only been announced for XBLA, like all the past Treasure HD remakes.

A truly bizarre statement, seeing as pretty much any gaming platform from the last decade could manage a faithful port of Guardian Heroes. If it was a full, modernised remake, perhaps.

At the time you had 3D on the Playstation, Wipeout, Tekken and Ridge Racer. No one gave a fuck about 2D stuff anymore. Anything cartoony and 2D was considered shit by most people, and to be fair, the screenshots of GH sometimes look a bit crappy, e.g. when a character is between planes because of the scaling. And slowdown was something that was laughed at rather than being part of the game.

The Saturn was better at 2D than the Playstation, but this was not that much of a consolation for many because it was 'old hat'. Lol! Look at this versus Toshinden or whatever and you can't imagine how you could have thought the PS1 looked good, so badly does old 3D age.

I remember playing this co op so tired I could barely keep my eyes open but I did notice my friend dying again and again. Looked over and he'd fallen asleep. Literally played it till we dropped.

You still can use that Saturn pad! With a pair of these bad-boys in tandem:

th_P1000391.jpg

Zero lag too, I've been playing S3&K on XBLA with my Saturn pad although I originally picked them up for SSFIV.

Bought from http://keio.dk/index.html

Edit: I fuggin love GH :wub:

+1 :hug:

Aw man, they're out of stock and it looks like they have been since January too :(

This is exactly what I want (I play fighters much better on a pad) although the final cost will end up three-quarters of the way to a Hori RAP!

Does anyone know where I can buy a *genuine* Saturn controller? Preferably new.
