Hope everyone got their Welcome Back stuff because Sony have yanked the plug on it. Which is annoying since it's taken me until about an hour ago to find my PSP charger and hit up the Store so I can update my PSP and then hit up the Store again and then click the Welcome Back banner to find it has no games in it and spent two hours on Google to find out they pulled the plug.

That thirty days they gave you to claim from the beginning sure did fly by.

(It's already been extended to the 5th of July, you can still get your free stuff)

Annoying it may be, but they said up front that it would only be available for a month.

The internet today is reminding me of those idiots on 'Airline' who wait until the last minute to set off to the airport, get stuck in traffic, miss check-in then shout at Easyjet for being incompetent.

The only difference being that on Airline you don't need to find fuel for your plane and then upgrade its avionics and then...

You had a month to change your password and claim you free stuff, but for some reason you waited till the last minute to do that, why? I know some people were waiting so they could activate PSN+ and get two month's worth of freebies, but they could've done that two/three weeks ago as well.

I naively assumed that since I nabbed my Welcome Back voucher on PS3 that also included the PSP content voucher, but it seems not.

Well fair enough, but it was made very clear it was a 30 day offer so why risk waiting if the games were something you wanted. It was mentioned as well (quite a few times in this thread alone, I think) that the PSP and PS3 Welcome Back packs had to be activated separately on PSP and PS3.

Did you not have a US account on your PSP as well as your UK one? You can still grab that stuff if you did.

EDIT: UK Offer extended as well.

As sad as this is going to sound i quite like the freebie avatars and themes their giving away on playstation plus. I think the 30days are worth it just to keep them at the end of it.

The fish tank dynamic theme is keeping my mind occupied while i wait for things to slowly download.

To be honest it was just more annoying than anything. I actually went on the PS3 Store, clocked that the Welcome Back section was still live, and then went off and spent a good 3 hours digging out my PSP charger, trying to go into the Store, updating my PSP, going into the Store, and finding the Welcome Back section is there... but without any content, and then Googling about trying to work out what the hell was going on.

I would've at least expected a courtesy tweet from Sony's VP of Warning You About Losing Out On Free Shit.

Only two? Thank to multiple valid accounts, I grabbed all the psp games and 4 ps3 games 8) I grabbed it all at the last minute, but in my defence I didn't have any ps3 hardware at the time and my Psp Go was collecting dust until a few days ago

Every time I tried to log into PSN store on my PSP it said my password had expired, so I go online to sort it, and even now trying to log in takes me to a "server down" page. And now i've missed my chance. What a crock of shit.

Update On PlayStation Plus Issues

I just wanted to let you know that we are aware of the problem that Welcome Back PlayStation Plus Users are having and are working to get this fixed ASAP. Currently, the Welcome Back offer is not expiring and so those that have purchased a full Plus membership are not able to access the full Plus content. This issue is the cause of many of the other problems you have reported here on the blog, such as new content not showing up in the Store as expected.

We are working on this problem now as a matter of priority and expect customers to see this fixed over the next few days.

Same here.

Yeah, it's properly fucked this is...

I went through all the info, and every single time I ended up with the same fucking link: https://store.playstation.com/login.gvm.

I've been waiting well over a month to get back to my PSN account.

Gits

Sony being a lot more open now. They've reported attempts by persons unknown to mass "test" sign in details. Affected users have had their accounts frozen and are being prompted to change their passwords. Sony are investigating further. Credits Cards "not at risk", if previously added funds have been used by any misuse, they will try to reimburse you.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/10/12/an-important-message-from-sonys-chief-information-security-officer/

We want to let you know that we have detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment (“Networks”) services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database. These attempts appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources. In this case, given that the data tested against our network consisted of sign-in ID-password pairs, and that the overwhelming majority of the pairs resulted in failed matching attempts, it is likely the data came from another source and not from our Networks. We have taken steps to mitigate the activity.

Less than one tenth of one percent (0.1%) of our PSN, SEN and SOE audience may have been affected. There were approximately 93,000 accounts globally (PSN/SEN: approximately 60,000 accounts; SOE: approximately 33,000) where the attempts succeeded in verifying those accounts’ valid sign-in IDs and passwords, and we have temporarily locked these accounts. Only a small fraction of these 93,000 accounts showed additional activity prior to being locked. We are currently reviewing those accounts for unauthorized access, and will provide more updates as we have them. Please note, if you have a credit card associated with your account, your credit card number is not at risk. We will work with any users whom we confirm have had unauthorized purchases made to restore amounts in the PSN/SEN or SOE wallet.

As a preventative measure, we are requiring secure password resets for those PSN/SEN accounts that had both a sign-in ID and password match through this attempt. If you are in the small group of PSN/SEN users who may have been affected, you will receive an email from us at the address associated with your account that will prompt you to reset your password.

Similarly, the SOE accounts that were matched have been temporarily turned off. If you are among the small group of affected SOE customers, you will receive an email from us at the address associated with your account that will advise you on next steps in order to validate your account credentials and have your account turned back on.

We want to take this opportunity to remind our consumers about the increasingly common threat of fraudulent activity online, as well as the importance of having a strong password and having a username/password combination that is not associated with other online services or sites. We encourage you to choose unique, hard-to-guess passwords and always look for unusual activity in your account.

So are they saying that this is just someone finally using the data that was stolen back in April or is this something new?

As far as I can understand, this has nothing to do with PSN security. Hackers/script kiddies have obtained a database of passwords and usernames from an unknown source, and have attempted to check them en masse for matches across the PSN.

Sony have detected this, and have identified the accounts which they have gained access too, and in response have temporarily locked them.

Surely it could have come from when they were hacked because nearly all of those ids/passwords have been changed since anyway?

I don't think they were PSN specifically, but a case of people having the same username and password across many different sites. Whoever has the user/passwords have very likely been knocking on many doors.

Sorry for the necro bump, but it seems that a second person has pleaded guilty to the hack.

For me, the interesting bit isn't that he pleaded guilty, but this:

Rivera used the HideMyAss anonymising proxy service in an attempt to disguise his IP address while he carried out reconnaissance work, probing Sony Pictures' website for security vulnerabilities. HideMyAss turned over his IP address after the authorities issued a court order, ultimately exposing Rivera's identity.

Not totally Sony related, but a reminder to those of us who use them that proxy services aren't really anonymous especially when court orders are involved.

ICO have now fined Sony £250,000 over this on the basis that the loss of data "could have been prevented if Sony's security had been up-to-date."

That always impartial bastion of quality journalism MCV tweeted this.

SCEE says it will appeal against the ICO fine, in a statement just sent to MCV. Too bloody right. Story imminent.
