***PSN & SOE Compromised - Problems with Welcome Back? Help & FAQ - Post #1***

Yeah, the PS3 is my main console and this whole thing isn't gonna change that, but all those online COD/FIFA fiends must be getting the shakes by now.

Even though they lost all my details to hackers, I feel sorry for those poor bastards, especially the little man who has to put the extra hours in to clean this mess up. its one thing after another with them this gen. Not saying Sony don't deserve all this though, but now they will have learnt their lesson I'm sure.

I don't think the less patient console owners are going to be that huge in number or make a massive impact of trade ins. Developers however might be suffering more than I thought judging by this:

Chris Svensson, Capcom Entertainment’s corporate officer and senior vice president, has said the continuing unavailability of PlayStation Network is costing the firm “hundreds of thousands, if not millions” in lost revenue.

In a post on the Capcom-Unity forums, Svensson said: “I’m frustrated and upset by [the outage] for a number of reasons. As a consumer, I also play games online on PS3, which I can’t do... and likely my personal information is also compromised. Secondly I like to buy things in the PlayStation Store and that I can’t do right now.

“As an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage [is] obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget. These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans.

To top it off, I received my replacement credit card today. The envelope arrived covered in Sellotape, with a note on the inside of it, with the words, "sorry we opened it by mistake" followed by a rather disconcerting winky smile.

So just cancelled that one now too. Thankfully I was saved the 20 minute identity theft protection spiel.

Any chance you can get it sent to your local bank instead of your home? When you can't even rely on your postie, then there's no point in getting any more important mail delivered to your home at all.

Ugh, I can see lots people ditching their PS3s at this rate.

I work in a CEX and weve had plenty of people come and trade their PS3 for the new xbox saying its because the PSN is down. I'm telling them they're mad, but who can blame them? It still seems over the top to me.

This has made me proper lol, Anoymous have been hacked:

Dear Users of the AnonOps Network,

We regret to inform you today that our network has been compromised by a former IRC-operator and fellow helper named "Ryan". He decided that he didn't like the leaderless command structure that AnonOps Network Admins use. So he organised a coup d'etat, with his "friends" at skidsr.us . Using the networks service bot "Zalgo" he scavenged the IP's and passwords of all the network servers (including the hub) and then systematically aimed denial of service attacks at them (which is why the network has been unstable for the past week). Unfortunately he has control of the domain names AnonOps.ru (and possibly AnonOps.net, we don't know at this stage) so we are unable to continue using them. We however still have control over AnonOps.in, and will continue to publish news there.

We would STRONGLY ADVISE all users to STAY AWAY from AnonOps.net and AnonOps.ru, and they should be considered COMPROMISED. Using or connecting to any service on those addresses may put your computer, and by extension your person, at risk.

We will continue to update you on this story, as well as on how we proceed with the future of Anonops.

We are profoundly sorry for this drama, and we can't give you a an estimate on when service will resume normally.

Alas, the IRC-network will probably remain down until we can sort this out.

We will try to keep you up to date you via our official channel (anonops.in).

Signed,

The "Old" AnonOps netstaff.

"shitstorm", "Nerdo","owen","blergh", and "Power2All"

Source

So karma 'eh.

Lets be honest, no gamer is going to pass up a AAA exclusive because of Sony's security fuck up. See also: RROD fiasco.

It is a massive fuck up though, no doubt.

NPDs over the next few months coulomb interesting though.

And I've had a transaction with netflix on my account...............

The only other places that have my CC details on is Steam and XBox Live........... and it's unlikely to be either of those.

I don't see how they could have possibly used your cc details for netflix because you need a us issued credit card with a us address to use it.

Yeah, I mentioned this sort of knock on near the start of the thread. Oddly this is a side that's strangely not getting much coverage. Since there is no separate dev network psn being down is holding up games in cert, the longer it goes on the more likely it is to start having an impact on release dates. Network mutliplayer/co-op development and test is also not happening, I've heard a couple of studios have started to set up servers and write programs to set up LANs for dev/testing internally, essentially spoofing psn.

Yep obviously I am fibbing and nothing has happened whatsoever. The fraud department never rang me and I never cancelled my card, and there was no attempt to make a payment to netflix.

I am a liar.

I'm not saying you're lying at all. I'm just saying that people have been trying to get netflix working with uk credit cards pretty much since they announced it for the 360 but no one has managed to do so with a uk credit card.

What'll be interesting is how they clear the backlog of titles that should've released onto PSN - if they stick to their once a week schedule they'll have to drop a fair few games at a time thereby potentially diminishing each titles revenue potential.

How many games were/are sitting ready to drop such as Sega Rally and how many people will just pick them up on XBLA instead because they're available and it's not an endless waiting game ?

Just had an email from Cineworld Middlesbrough confirming a booking for Pirates of the Caribbean, in my name, with a card I don't recognise at all, and also I live nowhere near Middlesbrough. This worries me. I hope someone just typed in the wrong email address and also has my name or something.

the outage makes me wonder if all of the big 3 will consider "re-thinking" their network strategies for the next generation of consoles given that all of the psn based titles as well as some of disc based titles are unplayable due to the fact that they require server authentication.

Eh? This isn't true. You can play PSN games offline fine.

No online play, of course, but they don't need to be authorised more than once (which happens when you first download them).

ah, ok. my mistake. however, I know that plenty of people that reserved titles like Brink and L.A. Noire won't be pleased that they won't be able get the potential out of their purchases (eg. play online [of course] or get their pre-order bonus missions) until sony gets the servers back up and running.

the comments made by one of the capcom execs that they figure it is costing them potentially millions in lost revenue is quite sobering that without safeguards and recovery policies and procedures, this could make or break many companies involved direct and in-directly.

That is mostly true apart from Bionic Commando 2 and Final Fight, you have to be connected to PSN to play them.

Hopefully this whole sorry incident will serve as a lesson to publishers that this type of DRM isn't on. I've got both of those games, and whilst I'm hardly desperate to play them at the moment, I think it's a practice which needs to be nipped in the bud as quickly as possible.

Xbox Live Indie Games seem to be unplayable offline, so some things currently definitely need pointless server authentification.

That's due to them being unrated or something - I think I could live without XBLI games for a while if it came to it not the stuff I'd paid £40 for though.

It is an awful way to treat customers, we are not thieves.

Poor form from Neowin there, that Seybold quote was given to Eurogamer: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-05-09-psn-matchmaking-back-in-next-few-days

Either way it's all rumour and speculation at the moment, and it's getting pretty tiresome. I can't imagine an internal source knowing anything for sure after they failed to get it back online last week. No-one will really know until it's back up, obvious as that sounds.

From that link:

While it may still take a while for Sony's Playstation Network to be fully operational, it looks like that the company may be concentrating on getting the network's multiplayer online service up and running first. Eurogamer reports via unnamed sources that Sony is looking to restore the Playstation Network's game matchmaking services "within the next couple of days".

I guess they could have mentioned Eurogamer in the headline or the first line but they do mention them.
